3,500 girls are at risk of mutilation in the capital


More than three thousand London girls are at risk of genital mutilation every year, experts warned today.

The report by black and ethnic minority women's organisation Imkaan found that in the city 3,500 baby girls are born every year to mothers who have suffered female genital mutilation, and therefore are at risk themselves. This is an increase of 65 per cent in 10 years.

Imkaan is calling for all school teachers to be trained to help girls who are facing violence and is calling on David Cameron to tackle the issue.

Marai Larasi, director of Imkaan, said: "It is not acceptable that in 2011 many girls and women living in Britain face extreme, violent threats to their safety and even to their lives. These issues are neglected because of fears of being labelled at best culturally insensitive and at worst racist.

"There would be outrage and a national scandal if this were happening to little white girls. Every girl should be protected, no matter her background."

The report's authors said girls from African families, as well as Afghan, Turkish, South Asian, Kurdish, Arab and Irish traveller families are among those who could be at risk, and stressed that education for health professionals is needed to tackle "a dangerous postcode lottery of support services for girls and women should they try to find help".

The report also noted that hundreds of women could fall victim to forced marriage every year. The Forced Marriage Unit dealt with 330 cases of women and girls at risk of forced marriage in London last year.

Do they really do this in the UK? Is it done in backrooms or do they travel back to their native countries? The forced marriage phenomenon is well known.

Sure they do it privately in religious ceremonies or life passage ceremonies, some at older ages. Its done just like male genital mutilation - the parents get whoever they want.

If they aren't allowed to go back to their native countries to get it done, they will find another way. Either way, it is almost impossible to prevent.
The best thing you could do is allow it, but have trained professionals doing the operations when the girls are at legal age.

I'm guessing insecure males wanting to keep control of their women. While I'm not one of the anti-mulsim ranters on this site, I find this practice dispicable. If a prosecution comes to court, the people concerned should get very very long sentances IMO.

This is a problem in the NL and probably any country where ME mini-societies take root. Read "A Caged Virgin" for an insiders view on the practices within the NL.

For me, this is part and parcel of the problem of "multiculuralism", which implies many cultures living in one country. I don't like it, even though I'm pro-immigration. When people come from the 3rd world to the 1st world, they come for a reason; generally a better way and quality of life, so why the hell bring this (*)(*)(*)(*)e with them?

Most surprising to me (from the article), was reading that girls from Irish Traveler families may be/are, subject to this barbaric practice.

 

The best solution is the following.

Reject religion, and kill anyone that promotes it.

Humans are born free, and innocent. Society, religion, and politics are the problem.

 

I think in fairness, it should be noted that the practice described/alluded to in the article, is not solely linked to a specific religious belief.

It is often practiced (at least in some African regions), in adherence to purely cultural tradition, not influenced by any "religious" rule.

 

The thread was never intended as a discussion of genital mutilation, male or female. It was simply seen as another opportunity to attack muslims.

End the practice. It's a dangerous disgrace.

 

It is not an inherently "Muslim" thing, many Muslims do NOT practice it, and many non-Muslims DO.
