99-Year-Old Divorces Wife After he Discovered 1940s Affair

    By Nick Squires in Rome | Telegraphco.uk | 3:39PM GMT 29 Dec 2011

“An Italian couple are to become the world's oldest divorcees, after the 99-year-old husband found that his 96-year-old wife had an affair in the 1940s.

The Italian man, identified by lawyers in the case only as Antonio C, was rifling through an old chest of drawers when he made the discovery a few days before Christmas.

Notwithstanding the time that had elapsed since the betrayal, he was so upset that he immediately confronted his wife of 77 years, named as Rosa C, and demanded a divorce.

Guilt-stricken, she reportedly confessed everything but was unable to persuade her husband to reconsider his decision.

She wrote the letters to her lover during a secret affair in the 1940s, according to court papers released in Rome this week.

The couple are now preparing to split, despite the ties they forged over nearly eight decades – they have five children, a dozen grandchildren and one great-grand child.

The discovery of the letters was the final straw for a marriage which had already run into difficulty – 10 years ago the husband briefly left their house in Rome and moved in with one of his sons, only to return a few weeks later.

The Italian press attributed the acrimonious split to the couple's southern blood – he is originally from Olbia in Sardinia, while his wife was born in Naples.

The couple met during the 1930s when Antonio was posted as a young Carabinieri officer to Naples.

The case appears to set a new record, at least for the age of the oldest protagonist – the previous oldest couple to divorce were Bertie and Jessie Wood, both aged 98, from the UK.”

    ……..

I say…. better late than never!!

But there should be a statute of limitations…after a certain time has passed it should be water under the bridge so to speak. Otherwise, Antonio C. can get very constipated, get irritable bowel syndrome, or any number of illnesses just because he is pissed at Rosa for having taken the opportunity to compare his lovemaking prowess with another man’s abilities.

And at age 99, it is a wonder Antonio didn't ask: "Who's Rosa?"

Antonio needs to fess up to any extra-marital affairs he has had during their marriage and then they should have some hot cocoa.

    .....

Maybe Rosa's sexuality was far more evolved than Antonios...more curious, more experimental, and he was prolly a 2-minute-in-the-dark-Mission-Position-Only person (like republicans) while she wanted all the lights on, in front of a mirror...but maybe I am giving Rosa too much leeway here....

It is all Antonio's fault though, he was lucky to have a wife give him five children, 12 grandchildren and one great-grand-child while keeping his house in order all those years plus having an affair that brought a flush to her cheeks....

I say: Good Luck to Rosa, who had the courage to live life the way she apparently wanted it. Let's all celebrate a very strong woman.

LOL! Funny! That's a liberal mentality for you ...."It takes a strong woman to cheat on her husband!" LOL........

I'm not knocking Rosa for having a fling and it was 40 yrs ago - to bad Antonio can't put it to rest - and there's always a story behind every affair a person has.......

The 99 yr old geezer might be gone b/f the divorce is final.....

Or maybe she was a slut...

I love how when men cheat, they are every name in the book; (it's all Antonio's fault", that his wife is unfaithful??!!), when women do it, they are exercising their right to express their sexuality,if you listen to liberal females.

    Pathetically duplicitous...

The pledge was given under FALSE PRETENSES...I'd say Rosa owes him DAMAGES for FRAUD and WILLFUL DECEIT.

LOL! Well, some are just like men. I've found that women in general are more manipulative than men, but I'd better be careful what I say because I might start WW-III.

That said, my wife is an angel. (True story! It took me years to find her, though. She's definitely a gift from God.)

True liberal women are great when it comes to experamentation.

Conservative men on the other hand like the freeky stuff like wearing dipers and having gay sex with strangers in the public toilets. We all know Lary Craig still thinks he is straight.

Well, you're right, X - I've known some very manipulative & devious women, they are out there.... then I've known some men w/the same exact traits......

Maybe Antonio should consider visiting a marriage counselor b/f he blows his long marriage away....

And I'm very happy for you that you found the perfect gal ....They are out there........

Good thing this divorce isn't happening in the US. Rosa would probably get alimony.

Plus they'd be invited on all the talk-shows from Oprah to Jay Leno and Dr Phil would be squeezed in between to try to patch up the reunion and they'd be offered a book deal w/a movie contract about true love gone wrong......

True, but men and women cheat for different reasons.
Men will cheat because they can. The opportunity is there and they take it, especially if they believe they won't be caught.
Women will usually cheat if they are unhappy. They are either neglected, or abused or not recieving the loving attention they wish for.

40 years ago was a long time to be dishonest to the person you pledged your vows to. I can understand why Antonio would feel betrayed. If Rosa lied about the affair, what else has she lied about?

We don't know and if she had lied about other things, she's not going to tell us.

The whole point is that she had an affair and 40 yrs later the 99 yr old husband finds out. To bad that they don't have the closeness and communication b/t them where they can talk about something that happened 40 yrs ago and why it happened and put it to rest w/forgiveness......

Yeah, I know. If you can keep a secret for so many years, it seems there was always trouble in the marriage.
Sad. They will not likely be around to see the divorce finalised. They should let bygones be bygones and ring in the New Year together.
