    However, Mormons call themselves Christians.

Therefore Romney calls himself a Christian.

Now I realize that doesn't matter to a large segment of Christians, especially evangelicals.....

But in answer to your original question- I think no- not yet. There is still a certain amount of religious bigotry.

I don't think Mormonism would be an issue, really. It's pretty close to Christianity.

Islam definitely still sparks fears, for somewhat understandable reasons.

I agree with this, but I would take out the "somewhat" qualifier.

Virtually nobody cares that he's a Mormon, and those that do are so radically socially conservative that they'd still vote for him over Obama. It's a non-issue.

They do have some strange beliefs like the Colob thing and the undergarments. Then there's the Indians being a lost tribe of Hebrews and the thing about black people.

Still, it's religion. I don't really expect it to make sense overall.

I will have to say that their view of the afterlife is a little more logical though. They basically believe you can't go to hell unless you knowingly defy God. Obviously, none of us actually knows God exists, since it's all faith.

Mormons are Christians... maybe not your brand of Christian, but Christian nonetheless.

You are aware that our founding fathers were not all that religious, right? Why is this important to you?

He doesn't seem particularly religious so it shouldn't be a factor.

What Mormons believe in aren't anymore ridiculous than what the rest of Christianity preaches. At the end of the day, who really cares?

    Thomas Jefferson
3rd U.S. President, Drafter and Signer of the Declaration of Independence

"God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the Gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever; That a revolution of the wheel of fortune, a change of situation, is among possible events; that it may become probable by Supernatural influence! The Almighty has no attribute which can take side with us in that event."
--Notes on the State of Virginia, Query XVIII, p. 237.

"I am a real Christian – that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus Christ."
--The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, p. 385.

Considering the risks taken by the founders to begin this new world, they had to believe in a higher power. The odds of being free of England was overwhelming. The words themselves of our Constitution, reveals those signers believed that God was our Creator, and He alone gives freedom to man. Yes, Liberals love to present another scenario about them being atheist! Their words say differently!

Well I would not call many of them Christian in modern terms. Deist and agnostic that practiced Christian philosophies would probably fit them in today's terms; but, there is no doubt that they respected the Creator and credited the Creator and tried to work as close to the Christian philosophy as they could.

Freedom of religion did not mean freedom from. It meant they did not want a state church with a man as the leader as was the case with the Church of England. I spent much time studying the writings of the founding fathers and though I am no expert I can say God (the God of the Bible) was very much a positive guiding influence in their lives.

Mormans are not Christian but their values are similar. Romney also believes in God. I tend to think our current President doesn't believe in God.

Yes he does! $ is his god. The money of the working class is the god of liberals. Look how much power they are given by spending it and giving it away.

The founders may have been religious. But they weren't blind to the corruption of religion.

This notion that our commander in chief must be a Christian who believes in God is ridiculous. As long as they follow our laws and the constitution, their religious background should be non-issue.

This is true; but lack of faith may be better than the wrong faith in this case.

Its very much an issue. A person's priorities, values and their perception of right and wrong come straight from what they believe. Its their core....

GEEEZ! What a bunch of lies and twisting of truth! Bush is a Christian, and a Christian understands and realizes that.

By the way, I go to many Masonic meetings, and I'm not aware of any Devil worship. Any past innuendos of such have been debunked. :bored:

The idea that there is a wrong religion is ludicrous. Christianity and Islam and all of their offshoots share the same origin and worship the same God.

Irrelevant. We are talking people and faith not computers and science.

Being the Wrong religion means you can not be president of the US.

No matter how you slice it that is how it is.

Welcome to America. Well what is left of it.

Perhaps that is still somewhat true. But those are barriers that can be broken. Where were you in 2008?
