From a historical perspective Egypt is a beautiful country with a rich ancient past. Though Mubarak ruled with an iron fist, crime was not tolerated. That's all changed. It's become quite a dangerous place.

I've been to the west bank several times you've got some big mansions there built by expats that have returned. Haven't been to Gaza, good shopping in the malls I hear. Been to the beach at Ashkellon for boombamella, the music festival. Just a stones throw from Gaza, pardon the pun.

 

Egypt's been that way for a while, not safe to be a blonde female tourist, as friends of mine found out in the seventies. They got stoned by kids and she was constantly touched and harassed by men.

 

According to a Haretz item I read last night, they claim that 500,000 Jewish kids in Israel, live in poverty.

Poverty is relative, of course, but wherever the money is going, it does not seem to be reaching them.
