You realize how many lawsuits that will be winding their way through the courts, how many plaintiffs Trump will have to create with each exercise of his powers to get this wall built? He gets a pyrrhic PR victory for his base, but no wall of any substance will result. He only succeeds in creating a bureaucratic and legal enemies list longer than the border. Its lifetime employment for the membership of the ABA in Washington and every state that borders Mexico. You sure won't have to advertise for clients in Texas or New Mexico. Now those are real caravans heading for the federal courts.

They keep coming, so there is no real deterrent. Clearly we need something else, and walls work in other countries, but liberals just pretend that's not true...

Utter nonsense, if the money is provided, the wall will be built. The same could have been said about anything, look at that disaster called Obamacare, plenty of lawsuits and it still got shoved down our throats...

Shutdowns should stop. They are a Carter era relic that do little positive for this country.

If the money is provided by the normal process by which it is allocated and directed by Congress It will be built. If through some fraudulent claim the emergency powers act is invoked, money is taken from other budgets that Congress directed, then each use of the emergency powers act to facilitate the walls creation at the expense of binding contracts, use of imminent domain, etc comes under increased scrutiny through the prism of this statutory language as well as the funding . The money is basically ripped out of other budgets resulting in signed contracts being compromised. We haven't begun to discuss what tribal interests, Mexican interests, and environmental or property interests will need legal advocacy all based on that possibly improper or fraudulent use of a statutory act.

How many from the caravans last fall got in?

If you want to talk deterrent, you have to look at the root cause of the problem or the thing that they are coming for. Jobs. So dry them up by taking a hard legal line with employers of illegals, and the incentive is gone.

But that requires a larger and workable migrant worker program so that crops can be picked ( which even Trump promised the agricultural community) and that becomes a black hole for overstays. Now it doesn't bother me because I am not obsessed with this issue, but we do need a cheap reliable labor force for agriculture if we want to stay the breadbasket of the world. Nobody wants to pay for the blackberries, a competitive above minimum wage provides.

Agreed. So that would require a more responsible employer to ensure overstays don't occur. And if they do, the employer is held responsible. You dangle that kind of stick over an employer's head and watch them streamline a process!

McConnell didn't start the shutdown, but by being the strongest supporter of Trump in Congress during that shutdown, and refusing to allow discussion or votes on bills that address the shutdown, until he knows Trump would support such actions, McConnell automatically became a central cause for the shutdown's continuation, and a prime obstacle to ending that shutdown. McConnell deserves much of the blame, and I hope Kentucky voters remember the pain he helped inflict on them & the nation when he's next up for re-election.

Require E-Verify on all employees, and regular checks on foreign workers on visa's.

But we know neither side would do so, thus exposing the Kabuki Theater this immigration issue really is to both the Dems and the Rs.

Meh, it worked long enough. President Trump is a man of action and will not let things become a long drawn out stalemate.

It's sad that, in 2019, the solution to the immigration issue provided by POTUS is a wall. A WALL!

"The wall" is not intended to be the entire solution, and everyone knows that.

The solution should be a combination of increased/improved physical barriers (I don't care if they are called walls or fences), mandatory e-verify, regular checks on foreign workers on visas, increased penalties to employers hiring illegals, and if possible, establishing a way for potential asylum seekers to apply from alternate locations (vs coming here), and (this may be the hardest of all) changing the rules regarding anchor babies and citizenship.

Why are you proud of keeping the border unsecured, maintaining the illegal pathways where 60-80% of the central American women are raped, continuing the sex trafficking of minors over our border?

To the establishment hacks, there have never been and will never be a "viable" third party. People don't want to change despite the fact they say otherwise. Hence Pelosi, Schumer, McConnell and co.

Honestly, one idea I've heard floated that makes sense (in a twisted, is this how bad democracy in the US has come to - kind of way) is allowing pork back into bills.

Used to be, you could buy compromise with some money to someone's district. Now there is no incentive to cross the isle.

Glad to hear the big picture thinking. And with so many initiatives to focus upon, it's even more barbaric that Trump would have shut down the government for as long as he did to get his wall.
