But it all that division REAL? Social media may be very turbulent but where are the crowds in the streets? If most of this division is being fomented by Putin could it be that it's nothing more than another role playing game to most of us and how much does social media affect people's day-to-day anyhow? I realize that I'm on here far too much and one way I know is that when I go out and talk to real people they don't mention Putin or Ukraine at all and they seem totally unconcerned about Truth Social while some still respond with "what?" when I mention Meta.

Are we making too much of the online world?

I Disagree entirely. He might have had a little (VERY little) grudging (VERY grudging) respect for a fellow "show biz" type but he would have utterly DESPISED Trump's policies and particularly the mindset behind them. Reagan was far from perfect in that respect but the major thing that always characterized him was a bedrock decency as a human being that saved him from the worst excesses of the "Friendly Fascism" that came to typify his administration and which eventually evolved into the ugly perversion that is the Republican Party today. Perhaps another like him can save the party someday but I see none that even approaches a "Great Communicator" in the Party now.

Reagan was passionate about the US and I have no idea what he might have thought of Trump then.

How would they have differed on trade? Which was the monster?

Read one of the better biographies of Reagan. Too much to cover here. I've already said the bottom line, literally the only thing that got Reagan going was communism. That goes back to the days when he brainwashed himself. He was a traveling spolesperson for GE for a while. He gave speeches that he was given that were very conservative, and included economic stuff. You need to understand Reagan was math illiterate. He couldn't have done a family budget. Don't believe me? Read Stockman's first book.

Back then, keeping an eye out for people Russia had compromised was just part of the routine. It's not just Reagan, it's unlikely he would have been accepted in national politics.

But let me make one thing clear, I think Reagan was a very bad president. Historians tend to avoid economics, and his worst mistakes were in that area. But he was worlds better than Trump.

Reagan traveled widely and was actually very sophisticated and cosmopolitan in his overall outlook. Xenophobia was not in his makeup. Remember he was genuine movie star. Never more than B list but still more than just a reality host. Trump was never a monstrous monster but he never had the chance, gods forbid he ever does. Trump COULD make Putin look like a pleasant child. Putin is smart and at least tries not to appear evil to everyone. Trump is plain old grade A STUPID and the only reason he's not sleeping on a grate somewhere is the silver spoon up his capacious nethers along with the pure grade X old fashioned super vindictive MEAN that matches his stupidity witless for cruel straight up

Unfortunately there are enough unbalanced people to make a civil war.
    They nearly did.
But you are right. Most people don't care. Much the best approach.

    Cosmopolitan, somewhat.

    Sophisticated? Read Stockman.

Reagan was exactly what we needed after Carter. Carter was the first President I can remember that told us that it was over, we were no longer top dog and we needed to step back and be one of the boys, big old world family. Reagan said bullshit to that and we loved him for it, still do. He was actually a very good President for his time and the world we faced then. Maybe now too. Trump is as close as we have today. That's a shame but it's true.

Most of the flaws and ambitions the left accuses Trump of are manifesting themselves through the Biden/Leftist takeover of the government.

    Sigh.

    Nixon was first with detente...

Life is not a comic book.

    Trump is psychotic.

We are still living in the era of Trump/Biden policies, Nixon was long ago but he was much better than Biden or Obama or Trump.

Nixon screwed up a lot. My favorite example is the way detente was handled. Russia got our precision ball bearing machines. That allowed Russia to double the number of targets they could hit with nukes. Nixon did more to increase Soviet firepower than anyone except maybe Stalin...

Look at the mistakes that made detente happen, pure amateur hour. The gas rationing, the political hubris that got him thrown out of office which plagues us to this day. There's more..

This is history, not mythology, and history involves a little work, capiche?

You need more than people to make a civil war, particularly unbalanced ones. You need an Army for one thing and no sizeable part of the US Army will ever go to war for Trump

OTOH the whole idea of my post is we don't know, and I'm the one bucking the polls. You may be right.

I couldn’t agree more. I do think what he did was wrong but his policies were better hands down

I think you may be surprised. Populists can be scary and very influential. I agreed with him on a lot of issues other than the free money competition during an election, and his foreign policy, and most of all his gun restrictions passed and planned. Really…. He was horrible other than for jobs and allowing the free market to push demand rather than political policy

Some crowds don't waste their time in the street, they go to the polls and vote.

Or some of them give money, or send an email to a congressman, my point is they should be manifesting their opinions in some other way than social media (and voting)

He was as sophisticated as you could be if you're not that smart (that's not a criticism, it helps to be smart if you're President but it's not really necessary) (Was it Stockman who called Reagan an "airhead"?)

Nixon was a good President (and a good person) who was tragically misused by his associates. Perhaps the rot I see in the Republican Party today started further back than I thought.

I know millenials don't want to hear it, but they are largely inexperienced idealistic children who are arrogant because nobody ever told them to shut up and sit down like every other generation.

I know that neither boomers nor millennials want to hear this, but there's a generation in between them that thinks they're both ****ed... 1584414804.9904-smiley.gif
