OR how about this alternative: You embrace Islam. Then there's nothing to fear ;) not that there was to begin with.

So you have thrown away all logical and rational thinking I see... Women who want to wear the covers should be forced not too. Okay, that is probably the most perfect way to give women rights I have ever seen. You want to dictate what they can't wear... Well good luck with that. May الله SWT help you on your mission to control what women can't wear. You will need His help.

Now I don't see what's so bad about this... 1/4 of the people are Muslim. I have another stat I think should be shared: 4/4 people in Brussels are human beings. Did you know that?

Islam is growing. To the haters, you just have to live with it. Or go to the Moon.

    الله اكبر

    سلام

    Don't push it, OJLeb...

When Belgians get confronted with groups like "Sharia4Belgium" who quite clearly want to use liberal democracy against liberal democracy, by proclaiming silly things like: "if the majority doesn't agree with homosexuality we need to put them to death".

Or when you have groups like the Arab-European League (AEL) proclaiming that Arab, next to Dutch, French and German, should become an official language...

    Patience can run out, OJLeb.

It needs to be accepted by the general public, that only wearing a headscarf is an expression of Islamic fundamentalism since it isn't in the Quran.

If any progress ought to be made, there needs to be an understanding.

In Islam, the Quran is seen "as the literal word of God" -- Christians (or cultural Christians like me) should't expect Muslims to denounce "the literal word of God". If they want to be backwards, that is their problem -- nothing I can do about that.

Muslims need to understand, that the State -- and her institutions -- are not, nor will they ever will be, subject to any sort of religion or ideology. If some people are unwilling to accept this -- they can be hauled onto an aeroplane as far as I care. :twocents:

The problem is that this is the end goal.

I'm not saying Muslims will force Europe to convert, but the ultimate ideal for Islam is to convert all of humanity to its faith.

The same is true of Christianity.

Problems arise when the underlying motivation of a culture is conversion to an unprovable idea and a lack of evidence-based logic.

Europe took a long time to slowly become more secular, and eventually, even many descendants of Muslims will move away from religion as education and quality of life improves.

In the meantime, however, the more orthodox aspects of Islam often conflict with things like freedom of speech. Many Muslims aren't yet accustomed to things like mockery of their religion or Mohammed, and many make the mistake of lashing out in retaliation.

Peace in Europe is essentially dependent on the descendants of Muslims becoming less orthodox and more secular.

The headscarf predates Islam, just like honor killings do.

If it was truly required for Islam, then all Muslim females would wear it, but they obviously don't.

Clearly, there are a wide variety of interpretations of Islam, but there seems to be some ambiguity concerning what customs are actually Islamic and what aren't.

    Ok.

Alcohol is haram, but Muslims drink it.

I think you may be referring to the burqa.

Case in point. It's like Catholics and certain Protestants as well.

I've known Muslim women here that don't wear headscarves. They dress just like non-Muslim women.

Personally, I'm ok with allowing headscarves and even the burqa, but I think that practical concerns (like facial recognition for identification purposes) should always take precedence over supposed religious practices.

A lot of Muslims don't follow many of the teachings of the Qur'an.

    Yes, I have as well.

    I agree.

I just find it hard to sympathize with defenses for the headscarf that involve Islam for this reason.

It seems like a manner of dress is pretty insignificant when it comes to what really defines Islam.

Most of what being Muslim seems to involve is just believing in Allah and Mohammed and following the "5 pillars."

Dress clearly is minor, as shown by how many Muslims don't follow it strictly, so it's kind of hard to say that banning a headscarf is really hindering the practice of Islam.

Granted, the motivation for the ban seems to be intentionally inflammatory.
