This is absolutely terrible and that officer should not only be off of the force but find himself in a jail cell.

I don't know why it has to be a racial issue but since you want to go there the cop is also black as you noted and if you think cops don't unjustly shoot white people, then you're not really paying attention.

Cops routinely violate the rights of all citizens.

In other news.... I have conducted a background check on the federal government and I have determined that due to their History of violence and criminal activity that they are not eligible to own guns

Well the family has called for it, as well. So, whenever the police decide to release it, we will see, for sure. But I still do not see any rational explanation, possible, here, other than a gross overreaction by someone who should probably have not been wearing a police badge, in the first place.

So, a lot of unarmed blacks are killed by police?.....What's a lot to you? I want a number.

All body camera footage from around the nation needs to be uploaded to a cloud that is accessible only to an oversight board that has nothing to do with the police department.

Turning off the body cameras at any point or turning off the audio feed should be a criminal offense requiring the officer to be fired and prosecuted.

The police department's don't need to have any ability to erase alter or delete videos

You are probably correct but you also should remember that there are two sides to every story and then there is the truth.

We need the body camera footage to be released, in it's entirety and in an unaltered form

I just googled " police officer accidentally shoots child " and there were quite a few results.

And I'm sure they were not all black.
I know you did not make that claim but it appears that the op may have made that claim. * Edited to add the claim below...................

So either this is happening, also, to 11 year old white boys, and the press is hiding it from us, or there is clearly a systemic over aggressiveness, in policing the black community................

    :roflol::roflol::roflol::roflol:

Yet another example of the uninformed being so easily misled. Senator Scott was never serious about police reform. If he was, why would he have voted against last year's "Safer Communities Act," the very limited crime bill that could get passed-- which, btw, 15 of Scott's Republican Senate colleagues, supported?

All evidence, supports the obvious conclusion, in the opinion of a large portion (I would guess, a majority) of the country, that cops much more frequently violate the rights of black citizens, and respond to them with unwarranted levels of aggression.

Seriously, you think there is any real chance that this would have happened, to a white family?

I can't remember ever hearing of it.

Did the news media not want to capitalize on that sensational story?

I also remember that NONE of the people who can justify any police killing of a black person - including one in handcuffs - leaped to the defence of officer Noor. Funny that.

Now we have an 11 year old boy shot in the chest after calling the police & those same folk are just looking for a reason to excuse it. Of course, the cop here is also black, so if history is a guide the 'any black man killed by the cops was asknig for it' crowd will probably split the difference and imply the victims are lying AND the cop is incompetent. Narrative maintained - win/win.

The poster I responded to specifically referenced unarmed blacks being killed by police and the phrasing used, "litany of times", clearly implies that they think this happens a lot and I wanted to know what that poster considers to be a lot.

That's all. The reason I ask is that the number of unarmed blacks killed by police is typically drastically lower than everybody thinks because the media paints the narrative that this happens frequently, when in fact it does not.

This is obviously terrible. However, my guess is that there are no police officers going to work in the morning with the plan to shoot a 11 year old boy.

Now, let me state MY hypothesis as to why these kinds of incidents happen so often in the US. Police officers have to assume that everyone they deal with is armed to the teeth. Therefore, every encounter with people they have, could be a traffic stop, or a call from a mentally unstable person, has the potential to become deadly in a heartbeat. Officers have to protect themselves, so this could lead to overreaction in some cases. Is there some profiling involved? Obviously, and that's where racism comes into play.

Now, I did a quick google search, but couldn't find any statistics. However, I bet that the rate of police officers killed in routine traffic stops is significantly higher in the US than it is in other civilized countries with much stricter gun laws. The side effect of this is that police officers also kill much fewer people in other countries, for example in Germany, you are 100 times less likely to die by cop than it is in the US.

This is another, not much talked about side effect of the gun culture and the ridiculous amount of guns on the street. Police officers have to constantly fear for their lives, therefore, they make more mistakes. I'd say address the problem at the root: Gun proliferation.

Why do you not go further, and actually check the stories, to give us a breakdown, by race?

Of course, the circumstances are important. If the child is welding an actual gun, for example, it makes it much harder to accuse the officers of using excessive force. I do remember hearing of one kid getting shot, who just had mental problems; I don't know that kid's race-- there, though, I think it is reasonable to see the boy's mental abnormality as the thing, to which police were over-reacting. Then, there is this little black girl, below, who was shot while sleeping on a couch, after a SWAT team threw a "flashbang" into a home, which-- while it might be a case of over aggressiveness, due to racial reasons-- there might also be the possibility of an honest mistake, in a chaotic scene (as Oldyoungin had mentioned).

So, the cases that deserve the most scrutiny-- and which I would imagine get the most, from the press-- are when it is a clearly unwarranted use of deadly force. I can remember hearing of these incidents, with juveniles, numerous times, and I had believed they had all been black, but from rechecking, I found that in the last case I'd recalled, it actually had been a 13 year old Latino (Adam Toledo, below). He'd been chased by a cop, yelling for him to stop. When the kid finally did give up, and raised his hands, the cop shot him. The kid had no weapon on him. This had seemed the standard situation, to my mind; but I welcome your doing further research, to determine how factual is this impression. That is to say: not to find some isolated case of a white victim, but to do a comparison, of the numbers. I see, already, that all instances do not involve black kids. But, so far, I haven't seen any white ones. Personally, I don't see my replacing the word "black," in my charge, with the word "minority," as that much of an improvement.

7-YEAR-OLD GIRL ACCIDENTALLY SHOT BY SWAT TEAM
    jus13-tdnt-story1-thumb-rel1.jpg

Confused after throwing a deafening and blinding "flashbang" into a home, police mistakenly shot and killed a sleeping seven-year-old girl. Seven-year-old Aiyana Jones was sleeping on the couch...

    <Snip>

Within 20 seconds of Officer Stillman getting out of his police car, 13-year-old Adam Toledo had been shot.

The clear image of Adam holding his empty hands in the air moments before the gun was fired has gone viral.

Anger around his death fed into protests this weekend raging against the level of force used by the police in America.

Sky News has gone through footage released by Chicago officials to assess in detail what the videos can tell us about the moment the trigger was pulled.

It reveals how Adam was shot within three seconds of being asked to put up his hands.

We've also analysed the evidence around whether he was holding a gun in the seconds before he was shot.

Audio files and documents released alongside the videos show the officer radioed colleagues to warn that the boy was holding his waistband while fleeing and that police initially documented the youth's age as between 18 and 25.

The "anti-cop agenda" has been going on for 50 years? Who knew?

First, no one hates the police but they have to take their collective heads out of their asses.
Second, there is NO DOUBT there is racism by police. Happens every single day.
    Of what?

That's not true but it does show that even those trained with the use of firearms, given a situation, even a benign one, tend to make that situation a bad one.

To me, "common sense" in a situation that you believe you need your gun drawn would also mean you could use some back up.

The ubiquity of guns must, I would think, play some part in this. But if it was the major factor, why would we not be constantly hearing about cops killing rednecks?

Why do you think I need to do your research for you when you're the one making the claim that it's either hidden by the media or not happening to white kids.

You're a veteran of these forums so I'm sure you're very familiar with the concept of the burden of proof

It's not a single incident. Happens all the time. You should read the news.
The California analogy is a bit of a stretch but it was used to make a point about how it happens ALL THE TIME. So, not a hasty generalization. The sample is very large and shows the racial bias is real. There is no appeal to emotion. No fallacy
Noor was found guilty of 3rd degree murder. What's your point? This incident has little to compare to George Floyd but it does have a lot of the same to Tamir Rice!

Here's an unarmed white man being executed by the police. I can find more examples if you would like.

His name was Daniel shaver.... Say his name!!!

    Payday!

I was going to feel bad when I heard that this kid was black, and was probably shot for being a fast moving dark figure that started the police officer.

Then I read that this officer was also black, and I remember how when I was growing up in the 1980s-90s that there was a problem with many black kids joining gangs. The horror becoming the question of whether the kid was wearing gang colors.

I remember a news story of two white girls being shot on their front porch for wearing gang colors. Kids tend to get shot based on the color of their clothing.

To bad Tim Scott said his 2020 bill would defund the police.
