CHICAGO – Two people were killed and at least 34 people were wounded in shootings across Chicago on Sunday, according to officials. Twelve of the victims were 17 years old or young. The youngest victim was 11 years old. Officials said there were ten shootings in a three-hour span on Sunday. The first and most violent shooting was on the 1300 block of West 76th Street around 12:30 a.m. where eight people were shot. The victims ranged in age from 14 to 35. Police said they were standing in a courtyard when two men walked up an opened fire. All of the victims are in stable condition no suspects are in custody. The next shooting was just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning in the 1300 block of South Millard Avenue. There were six shooting victims in this incident, a 17-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot in the face. In another incident in the 1600 block of South Avers, four people were shot at a block party shortly after midnight. No one was killed. In a fourth separate shooting four people were shot in the 900 block of North Karlov Avenue shortly before 1am. In this incident, someone from a passing car fire at a group of people and someone in the crowd fired back causing the car to crash. The suspects ran away on foot. Why is Chicago the city oft brought up when there are at least 20 more that are deadlier? What about the cities with less than 100k people where homicide per capita rates are sky higher? Chicago can be explained easily (but not the others). Chicago has an extra long history with violence spanning over 100 years. It has lead built into its infrastructure. It has corrupt rulership and law enforcement.
We need to clean up all of them. Chicago celebrates new 'Barack Obama Day' holiday weekend with four dead and dozens shot Chicagoans commemorated the event in the way they know best: gang shootings.
Each are violent for different reasons though. Focusing on Chicago is partisan. It has been corrupt for over a century and nothing has been done about it. I can't imagine anything meaningful being done for the other violent places.
Every violent hell-hole in America where the violent death rate for Military Aged Black Males is higher than our US Troop death rates during the worst of the Iraqi surge are Democrat run hell-holes that Democrats have run for generations. We can only clean up hellholes if they are run by Republicans? Republicans don't run any, so your position boils down to we stand by and do nothing while children are gunned down on the streets of America. I think it's time we had a discussion about what responsibility America as a whole has in making sure these young people can grow up in safety in schools that prepare them for adulthood.

If one looks at this as a 'black' problem people won't care. Matter of fact you will find some people cheering it on. The truth is the 'white' homicide also took a sharp jump the past few years so this should be seen as an American problem and not a racial one. The two Republicans (that I can think of) that took on these places have done some good. But they are heavily embattled by entrenched Democrats and propaganda suggest they are at fault for certain conditions. It's difficult to solve problems in this country because of partisanship and stereotypes.
I'm not really interested in the views of those that would cheer on black deaths. Fire Arm homicides in Illinois are 1.05 per 100k for White men vs 47.94 per 100k for Black men. Our deaths from gun violence during the Iraq Surge was in the 20's per 100k. It's far more dangerous to be a black male in Chicago than it was to serve in Iraq during the midst of the surge, a LOT more dangerous. Democrats have run these hell holes for generations. They aren't going to suddenly fix this, do we have a national responsibility to step and secure the individual rights of those that live in these cities? Obama ran on his record as a "Community Organizer" but cannot point to any community he successfully organized. Rahm Emanuel may not want a good crisis to go to waste but this crisis has been going on for several years. It has gone to waste.
Frankly, we do have a national responsibility to fix this especially since we're supposedly peace-keeping in the Middle East and North Africa. To fix it, imho, you would have to force the resignation of a whole slew of politicians, institute a federal police state in specific areas (local police are just plain corrupt truly can't be trusted) on a temporary time table. Then, enact and revoke laws that truly keep the peace. That would include fixing things like the water system because it's dumping lead into the populace. The probability of this happening is non existent imho.
It would certainly take balls. Prosecutors examining politicians for corruption and criminal conspiracy with the gangs is probably a better tactic. Building a working coalition with the Black Churches is probably another good idea. My fear with Federal Troops is that if all sides decide that they are a hostile occupying force that you could end up with something that looks like a civil war. You would need a powerful set of interests within the neighborhoods calling for Federal Protection to make this work.
