Its not just "informal setting" like this forum where such things occur. It is policy among those fighting climate change. Perhaps a more complete quote from Schneider demonstrates this

“On the one hand, as scientists we are ethically bound to the scientific method, in effect promising to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but – which means that we must include all doubts, the caveats, the ifs, ands and buts. On the other hand, we are not just scientists but human beings as well. And like most people we’d like to see the world a better place, which in this context translates into our working to reduce the risk of potentially disastrous climate change. To do that we need to get some broad based support, to capture the public’s imagination. That, of course, means getting loads of media coverage. So we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements, and make little mention of any doubts we might have. This “double ethical bind” we frequently find ourselves in cannot be solved by any formula. Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest. I hope that means being both.”

Hold no quarter in a war! Agreed :)

Now we all we need is a bunch of quotes from the fossil fuel companies and their proxy surrogates to balance it out. Got any of them?

My mistake. I thought "my scientific training" referred to some adherence to the scientific method when instead it was an embrace of "getting loads of media coverage. So we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements, and make little mention of any doubts we might have."

As my favourite uncle, who was an outspoken conservative, used to say: "questioning the climate change narrative is worse than being a baby rapist". And he was a very able scientist - headed up the team that invented the drops that you put on the back of a dog's neck to get rid of fleas.

Times have changed, I like to think and there is a bit more wiggle room for dissent, a bit less angst and more compromise. Probably because team left have got their way sufficiently...

I was actually agreeing with your comment at the top. It became a war, not a dialogue.
