You are right about it just being another hurdle. I was just trying to provide some positive motivation.

Not all good-paying jobs require a advanced degree or serious vocational training. The company you work for is also a big factor.

I am fortunate the company I work for doesn't outsource. And although we love automation, our customers still prefer calling in more often than not. And best of all, our company really believes that to get the best service, you have to hire the best, train them the best, and treat them the best you can.

They really are good as gold, and I know it makes me want to work much harder than if they were not this way.

oh I absolutely agree.... I have more education that Lebron James... yet, I'm willing to bet, he makes just a weee bit more than I do with just a highschool diploma.

I have taught a kid in 2001 that figured "since I'm going to be in the NBA, I don't need to get good grades, I can just go straight to the NBA from highschool" That was his plan.

was it possible.... technically, at the time, you could go straight from highschool to pros (Kobe Bryant had just recently done such a thing.

and with mother sitting back in the transition meeting at her 4'11 14 y.o. who had just been cut, for the 3rd year, from basketball in middleschool, nodding in agreement that she watches her son play basketball in the back yard with friends and he's good.... a poor life decision was occurring and the only thing I was allowed to say ask was if he had a plan B. Mother dropped the ball and kiddo, last I heard, is working as a production assistant at a news channel. Sounds fancy and all, but it's a min wage job, probably complaining that the man is greedy and should come off his profit so he can have a "liveable wage" at 28 ish y.o.

Success stories like yours do happen.... but just like higher education increases the chances of success, but does not garantee it, the lower the education, increases the chances of working min wage for life..... although it does not garantee it. You improved your skillset to get your job.... many just sit there at McDonalds and complain that their greedy boss should loosen the purse strings because they want more money.

Just today, I saw on FB, on a local yardsale page, a person was looking for a babysitter for Friday..... It's a wierd request on a yardsale page, but it happens a lot more than you'd think. I clicked on the link of the girl asking. From what a cursory creeping of her fb page, her statuses revealed

    1. went to local highschool and up until 3 years ago (although a status later said "you don't need a degree to make sandwhiches) so I'm assuming now, a dropout

    2. she's about 21ish, but has 2 kids

    3. she was threatening to put baby daddy in jail for child support, and was happy when he paid (the minimum I'm sure)

    4. She works at McDonalds currently, but only since August. Prior to that, she was doing one of those passive-aggressive girl posts complaining about someone helping another friend get a job at Subway over her.....

    5. she smokes a lot of pot....

yet, it's the the franchise owner that is greedy and causing her to live in poverty.

True, but not limited to just the kids involved. As mature as most 18 year olds think they are, most are not. Certainly most are not wise. IMO, we should break the current paradigm and reinstitute the draft, no deferments. Get them away from mommy and daddy for a couple of years. They can choose the military, Peace Corps, Dept. of Health, something equivalent to CCA or other like programs. It'll give them some life experience away from home and allow them time to think about what is important to them.

When I was in college at 18 I partied a lot and my grades suffered. The returning Vets were all A and B students. Clearly they had a more focused mind than I did. If 18 year olds were allowed to mature under similar circumstances, perhaps they'd be less likely to make $100,000 mistakes such as majoring in Zoology or Acting.

My college roommate majored in Acting at Florida State.... people think "burt reynolds went to FSU" but he didn't major in acting.

I remember his name was David... (my roomie) but I can't remember his last name to look him up on facebook to see which McDonalds he works at.

another classmate.... in my teaching classes, got her degree in education, but went to New York and is a c-list actress currently. She's played parts like "cowgirl bartender" in a pretty big movie.... she's not rich and famous yet, but she makes an income that she can live in New York, so she's not doing bad I can't imagine.I can't remember what movie it was exactly. She's listed on IDMB and it tells me, I'm just too lazy to look at the moment. But at least she has a marketable degree should acting fail.

She's the girl I should have nailed back in college.... she was drunk, and willing to go as I drove her home after a education classes finals party we had. We were all starting internships in January, and everyone was hooking up with everyone else. I was the nice guy  guess what I did that night. lol

I don't think I would have developed a relationship with her... but how cool would it be to say "see that girl next to Denzel.... yeah, I tapped that in college..... " lol

Not for unproven employees. $10.00 is my starting point. From there if you put in any effort you move up. If not you stay there or I lay you off. It's that easy.

What you propose worked for the Vietnam generation and prior. Why? Because the family structure was far stronger that it was today. Parents of todays teenagers are babies themselves with little to no common sense. They will scream bloody murder if you draft their babies and claim you only want to make them killers. It make you wonder why they had children in the first place.

What is so amazing,is that todays' young have so much more access to information than we ever did. Yet, they seek what entertains them. So much more to learn from but they appear to come out with less real knowledge of what they need to make a decent living. I think your draft idea has merit... but the molding of a good mind and intelligent motivation has to start at home. We are in trouble in that regard if babies continue to have babies..

love it.... someone who has risked NOTHING in your business, thinking they have the right to tell you how to spend your money, how much you should pay labor and why you are wrong.

heck, you even pay ABOVE what most start off at, and it's STILL not enough for some.... you could have said 12$ an hour, and angryamericanman would have judged you greedy and wondered why you didn't pay 13$

you must not know what you're doing..... lololol

Which indicates a lack of self-discipline on their part. How can kids who are handed everything ever learn the value of anything? How can kids who don't have to work for something ever learn discipline? Focus? Self-restraint?
