To my Faith-based brothers and sisters of all religions: If God told you to murder your child, would you do it? This question came up in a casual debate, the answers were interesting. I'd like to get your take, please.
Oh, God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son" Abe says, "Man you must be puttin' me on" God says, "No", Abe say "What?" God say "You can do what you want Abe but The next time you see me comin' you better run" Well Abe said, "Where do you want this killin' done?" God say, "Out on Highway 61" Read more: BOB DYLAN - HIGHWAY 61 LYRICS
That's been done already. And the lesson from it...is that God won't expect you kill your child. So its a question not worth asking. If god asked me to kill my child that would be a sure sign....it wasn't really God.
Not in Abraham's day but I'm answering the OP's question. It was the second poster that brought Abe into this.
A Christian knows God. A Christian knows that if there is a voice telling him to kill somebody---it isn't God. And frankly---I think there are voices out there telling vulnerable people who don't know God... to kill. God would never ask someone to kill their child. God is anti-human sacrifice. The Bible helps you "know" God---but only if you are open to that teaching.
Explain what? The op was: If God told you to murder your child, would you do it? Are you changing the op? Just let me know and we can change subjects.
The commandment against murder was, and Abraham was perfectly aware of it - which is why he told Isaac that God would provide the lamb for the sacrifice, which of course He did.
Yes, but God the father commands "thou shalt not kill" and to honor my earthly mother and father so if he asked me to kill my kid, I'd tell him no and justify it with his command to not kill.
Cept in my catechism, God the father says, thou shalt honor thy father and thy mother. Makes no reference to earthy or not.
You have a good point. Cain was punished for killing Abel. - - - Updated - - - Who is your heavenly mother ?
Oh, ok. Like I said....the story of Abraham and his 1st born is a lesson to us that God would NEVER demand a parent to sacrifice humans to Him. Its a story that helps us know...that human sacrifice is anti-God.
Then what is this Jesus story all about?????? - - - Updated - - - As far as I know, there isn't one. But there is a heavenly Father, No or Yes?
Actually, such voices are in there, not out there. As for what God would or would not do, how can you know? I thought God was supposed to be above our comprehension, and the bible is chock full of examples of God apparently ordering murders, wars and genocides anyway.
