After mocking Trump for promoting hydroxychloroquine, journalists acknowledge it might treat coronav

A few notes on your comments and link about the supposed researcher.

First, if the researcher really believes the things stated in the article and isn’t being misrepresented by the journalist, the researcher should be unemployed. The two French studies in question can not be used to come to any conclusions because they were designed to learn different things. If you had read any part of either one that would be obvious. Don’t take journalists word any more than Trump’s. :)

Second, the study claimed by you and the researcher to show chloroquine isn’t effective was done on a specific demographic we already know are not the best candidates for this treatment. We know chloroquine is targeting viral replication. It’s moronic to assume or design a study expecting it to reverse or stop lung damage. I’ve explained on PF twice why this treatment is most effective used early. I’m not going to do so again here because you obviously don’t have any interest in science.

Finally, while we are on the subject of science, let’s touch on one of the foundations of science—repeatability. If someone wanted to verify or debunk the first “encouraging” French study, you would design a similar but improved study. Instead, this second one you are excited about is smaller, has no control, and the subjects were hand picked from a demographic we already know are least likely to respond to this treatment.

In short, the study you linked to, the journalist, and possibly the researcher are way out of their depth. There is no “science” on display at all.

It doesn't take much to find videos of democrat politicians and hollywood elite running their mouths and then doing a 180 a few weeks later, eating crow. Trump is serving up crow on a plate for the MSM everyday.

Interesting....please show where I claimed to be an academic?

Yes, I quickly glanced through your link. I am fully aware that there are some studies that show solid promise, and some that reveal a healthy skepticism. You have absolutely given a link to an article referencing a researcher that is expressing skepticism (as if that somehow is the final word on the subject.

-I read where it said..."French medical journal provides new evidence that hydroxychloroquine does not appear to help the immune system clear the coronavirus from the body.".....which is obviously beyond your understanding. That specific claim does NOT mean that it might not possibly have shown efficacy in reducing symptoms of pneumonia or many other aspects of the symptomatology associated with the virus, but it DOES seem to indicate that in that particular cohort that it did not result in the virus being more quickly cleared out of the body. You see, there are a lot of endpoints (research goals) for various studies, and clearly the endpoint in that one was how quickly that it clears the body. Of course to someone that is ignorant of medicine, that probably appears to you like that therefore means it provided no benefit, but to anyone with even a cursory understanding of evidence based medicine, they know full well that is referring specifically to the research goal in that particular study. It is easy to show that to a laymen and have them totally take it out of its proper context and give them a wholly false impression. While I have personally not dove deep into all of the Hydroxychloroquine data, it seems that the reasons for optimism that I have seen have been specifically about a reduction in pneumonia symptoms and complications. Your reliance upon this article tends to indicate that you havent the foggiest idea as to the limitations to the negative result from this particular study.

-I also read where it said "The study comes on the heels of two others - one in France and one in China - that reported some benefits in the combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin for COVID-19 patients who didn’t have severe symptoms of the virus."....of course since that is a positive reference to its efficacy you have oddly chosen to entirely dismiss that little tidbit, and you have instead chosen to use the incomplete headline that kind of sort of seems to make the implication that you are wanting to push.

-When it is all said and done, it is the doctors in this country that have chosen it as their most promising treament option that is available widespread at the moment. Clearly they agree with my assessment. You and the left wing blogosphere oddly feel that you seem to know better than the totality of the medical establishment.

    - This treatment in the end may or may not work. It is currently the best most promising option available for widespread use as evidenced by whom is currently using. None of that has ANYTHING to do with any words that Trump has said. What about that is so difficult for you to grasp?

Or yours. Thanks anyway. I posted that article because the OP makes a claim about what JOURNALISTS acknowledge and it contradicts what an expert claims. I personally don't know because virology is not my area of expertise but what everyone should know is that there are expert opinions on the subject and that Trump is the least of these. So those who are not experts should listen to all sides from legitimate experts and not from politicians and certainly not from anonymous posters in this forum, and that includes you and I and everyone else here, we only post layperson opinions.

FAW, you know better than this. Think about it, if EVERY NYC hospital is administering this combo to their patients, why are still 1000s dying everyday?

I am not claiming this drug combo has 0 effect, it might prevent some deaths. However, it clearly is not the miracle cure that will make this crisis go away overnight. It might reduce mortality rates from 3% to 2.5%, and that would be great (these are imaginary numbers, just used as an example). However, that would not change anything regarding the overall impact of the virus.

Believe me, I'd be the first to celebrate a "cure", after all, I live with people in the high risk group in my household. I'd be happy for another four years of Trump, if it would mean chloroquine is the miracle cure. However, one has to be realistic. We haven't found cures for the common cold or flu, after decades of research. Why would anyone think that a miracle cure can be found in a month for this new virus?

The point is: These drugs are no replacement for social distancing. That's where the problem lies: People believing in these false cures will make them complacent, abandoning caution when going out shopping, or even socializing. And then they catch the virus and bring it home to their loved ones.

A significant reduction in death rate, by itself, does not change the overall impact of the virus?
You suppose a possible 16% reduction on death rate, above -- suppose, then, that rate of reduction similarly applies to the number of people who require intensive care or hospitalization. Would -that- qualify as a meaningful change in the overall effect of the virus?

    Well....

-At no point have I said or implied that it is a miracle cure that will make this crisis go away overnight. I have not seen Trump make that claim either.

    - There has never existed a "cure" for any virus. The best that modern medicine can do is to attempt to alleviate some of the symptoms while it runs it course. Who on gods green earth gave you the impression anyone was calling this a cure?

-Who has said this replaces social distancing? For crying out loud we can share reasons for hope without it meaning that we are therefore telling people to replace what they should be doing to avoid the virus. This is bizarre, if it were Obama or any Democrat expressing some vague reason for hope the left would have no problem with it, but since it is Trump, they start envisioning all of these nonsensical interpretations that people could possibly have. I could envision a realistic scenario where a person panicking about this virus could commit suicide. I am not going to therefore conclude that the President should not mention the dangers of this virus because it could lead people to kill themselves. That is essentially what the left is doing with Trump. Anything he says they spin a yarn about how that is going to be misused.

That's not true, nobody is trying to 'undercut' any facts, but if they aren't true, or if the drug hasn't been proven, then --- as Dr. Fauci clearly said on March 20th -- "the drugs promise is purely anecdotal". Now, maybe your perception and definition of the word he used, 'anecdotal' to you translates as a cure, or a solution. That's not what anecdotal means at all. So, google it.

Dr. Fauci said nearly the same thing today, just a few hours ago. Dr. Fauci warned Americans again that we should not assume that hydroxychloroquine is a 'knockout drug'. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/03/cor...me-hydroxychloroquine-is-a-knockout-drug.html

Nobody wants promises, nobody wants lies or false claims of a miracle drug. All we want is the TRUTH from the EXPERTS, and Trump is most certainly no expert.

I’m not posting layperson’s opinions. It’s instructive to all here that you have no answer to my statements of fact—only diversion and denial that some people here are deeply involved in the “sciences”. I’m pointing out the flaws in your links, that is all. The people you are calling experts either aren’t or they are being misrepresented because nothing you’ve provided is based in “science”.

Clearly you aren’t interested in science. That seems to be quite common these days. It’s funny to see science denial from a demographic that accuses others of such behavior on subjects like AGW. :)

You answered your own question in (red) :wierdface:As for a miracle cure, it damn sure is and was for those is did save.. Why don't you celebrate that instead of standing on your tip toes to find something negative to say about it?

Nobody claimed it was a knockout drug or a cure....the President clearly didn't, and as the Doctor said he is in agreement with the President.

You might think differently, but again as the doctor warned you, folks for whatever reason, are trying to seperate the two. They are together.

What is so difficult about reading the man's words and having a clear understanding of what he meant? He's speaking English, you speak English, why aren't you grasping what he's telling us?

I am....100 percent, he and the President are a united front here...not sure why that's difficult for you to grasp...but it could be because of the people he warned you about that were trying to divide him and the President.

    FAW, just answer this question:

Why is the RW so interested in advertising this drug combo? If you can give me the answer to this question, you know what this is all about.

Again, I am not saying it has zero effect. So far, everything about this drug combo is anecdotal. I'd rather go with science than anecdotes. Unfortunately, everything has become so politicized that even talking about a drug has become a partisan issue. Wonder why this is?

You just implied that Fox was calling it a knock out drug or 100 percent absolutely guaranteed cure. It wasn't. The French were not. Again do you even begin to grasp why your sort of rationalization is considered fake news? Nobody said that it was a cure all, and yet here you are implying that in the nature of your reply.

Nobody claimed it was a 'knockout' drug -- nobody, got that yet? What Dr. Fauci said, and these are his exact words five hours ago,

"We’ve got to be careful that we don’t make that majestic leap to assume that this is a knockout drug. We still need to do the kinds of studies that definitely prove whether any intervention is truly safe and effective,"

Now please, stop saying that any one of us has ever claimed that Trump or anyone else in his team claimed that this would be a 'knockout drug'. Stop the disinformation right now because I have just proven you wrong.
