WASHINGTON – QUOTE: "U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has not yet been given details of the Jan. 8 shootings in Tucson, Ariz., that wounded her and 12 others and killed six people, including a staff member, according to her chief of staff.

Pia Carusone said Wednesday on CBS's "The Early Show" that the Arizona congresswoman, who can carry on simple conversations, knows there was a traumatic event but has not been told about the severity of the wounds to others. That will happen in time when she's "at a higher level of communication," Carusone said.

"Doctors have said it's not really fair, as you can imagine, to tell someone something so tragic and someone that might not have the ability to ask the detailed questions that someone will have when they hear this news," she said.

Jared Loughner is charged in federal court with killing a federal judge and Giffords aide Gabriel Zimmerman and attempting to kill Giffords and two other staffers, Pamela Simon and Ron Barber.

Giffords was shot in the head and is undergoing intensive rehabilitation at TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston.

Words in her vocabulary are returning and she is saying new words every day, Carusone said. Giffords can also sense when conversations turn serious and recognizes visitors, she said.

"Short phrases, simple thoughts. There's no doubt that she understands what's happening around her. She laughs at the appropriate times," Carusone said.

"She's just working really hard and progressing. It's paying off. And every day there's new progress that you see. So, you know, we feel very hopeful at her recovery."

Giffords' husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, has said he expects his wife to be well enough to be at Cape Canaveral, Fla., for his planned launch of the space shuttle Endeavour in April, although her doctor said it's too early to say." END QUOTE

IMO: The attempted striking down of such a gifted woman as Gabby shows the fragility of life in the United States, plus the toxic political climate Americans and politicians are forced to live under in our pursuit of a Democratic form of government.

What happened to those people, including Giffords is a crime, but the witch hunt that occurred afterward was equally so.

Compared to the many retards in Congress today, Gabby Giffords is considered a genius.

And with her enormous strength and perseverance, Gabby has exhibited an emotional health to carry her thru this temporary setback. She will be back in Congress having lost some of her beauty, but never her fortitude. Gabby personifies for me the reality that women are incredibly strong, and not the weak, fragile creatures we are made out to be in movies, ads, and by male propaganda.

How can you equate the disgusting horror of what happened to Gabby with unions, slander, destroying state houses, and witch hunts? That is so incredibly callous and denigrating to a Representative in Congress who was a victim of a monstrously violent sect, cult, or whatever you want to call the T-baggers...whose political ads demonstrated how to win an election by looking down the crosshairs of a gun. Plus Gabby's T-bagger competitor who sanctioned a 'political gun meet' in an attempt to win the election.

No one can argue the point that the political climate was severely toxic, and all it needed was a mentally distressed, easily persuaded person to be goaded into violence.

There was that old 90 year old drooling fart that was wheeled in to legislate, didn't know where he was, was a segregationist but couldn't remember why, had a black child by a maid and his name was Strom Thurmond. What I am saying is there are many dysfunctional people in Congress that shouldn't be anywhere withing 100 yardds of any legislation pertaining to the Americna people.

Why is a recovering Congresswoman, with a gun shot to the head, any worse than Strom Thurmond, or Vitter, who likes to wear diapers to the Washington brothels, or Mark Foley who had a penchant for young male pages, or Craig, who loved public men's rooms?

Gabby Giffords was a victim of our exceedingly toxic political atmosphere; must she pay for that for the rest of her tenure?

Look, the lady is not aware of the circumstances surrounding her current condition. I see no reason to think she is competent to vote on legislation.

Did she deserve what happened to her? of course not. it was terrible and tragic. However, if she has not been told why she was injured and the extent of the affair then I do not think she is aware of legislation to the degree necessary in order to vote on it.

Considering the extent of her injuries, it's not surprising that she has no memory of the event. as for her vote in Congress, physical ability is no indication of cognitive ability. but as the outcome of the vote was already decided, her appearance looks to be solely for PR.

 

how would she have been aware of it? she's been sheltered from news reports, and she'd been shot in the head. you don't take one in the head and start taking notes.

Western europe has a FRACTION and a small fraction of gun related deaths in relation to America. So gun control can work.

 

She should not be allowed to cast a vote if she has limited faculties.
I'm very pleased in her recovery but it may be too early for her
to mentally handle the merits of a House Vote.

Gabby Giffords knows precisely what happened to her, and was told by her husband with surrounding family. She is recovering very well, being young, strong, and resilient. She may have a little trouble speaking and walking
...but so have people that have been injured in car accidents, war injuries. Do you intend to keep them invalids for the rest of their lives? Gabby has taken this in stride, has full knowledge of what happened, has continuing therapy.

My main worry is that will Gabby even WANT to return to Washington? There are many ways to serve your country, but getting shot in the head by some gullible hotshot loser is not one of them....

 

I am sure she will be reminded that Palin was responsible for having her shot.

 

I'm glad that Giffords is recovering well, but I'm somewhat concerned that she might need someone to stand in for her still.

I don't think it's such a good idea to have someone rehabbing from a shot to the head voting on important legislation.

Now they need another election to replace a cognitively impaired Gifford. Or AZ can continue to support a cognitively disabled politician like republcans do.

You nailed her very accurately..... I read her 1st post and tho't 'wow! she really can talk about a tragic situation and not throw her mud-slinging crap around, but it only lasted in one post...... then she was back to normal.

Oh well ... some things just never change.........
