Tue, Sep 27, 2011 - Spare a thought for poor Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. It was US diplomats who back in November 2008 cruelly dubbed him Robin, to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putins Batman.

The phrase stuck. Over the past four years, Medvedev has done nothing to dispel the impression that he is anything other than a useful seatwarmer, his time in the Kremlin a legalistic blip in an epoch of endless Putin rule. It wasnt always like this. At the start of Medvedevs presidential term, there were faint hopes he might preside over a partial liberalization of Russian society. In the shadow world of Kremlin politics, it was hard to work out what was going on behind the scenes. Some looked in vain for signs of an intra-leadership struggle. US President Barack Obamas administration tried to reach out to Medvedev in the hope this would nudge Russias foreign policy away from its hawkish Putin vector toward a more constructive approach. By last year, however, US diplomats had concluded that Project Medvedev was hopeless. Medvedevs position became one of humiliation. Medvedevs announcement on Saturday that he was stepping down to allow Putin a third presidency thus came as a surprise to no one. Medvedevs only significant act as president was to extend the presidential term from four years to six, hardly a democratic step forward. This was seen, rightly, as teeing up the conditions for a triumphant comeback during elections in the spring next year: Putins.

The prospects for Russia are gloomy. The country now faces a long period of political and economic stagnation and single-party rule. Disenfranchised Russians are voting with their feet and moving abroad. In theory, Putin could go on until 2024, when he will be 72. Or longer. Last week, however, blogger and anti-corruption campaigner Alexey Navalny predicted that Russias kleptocratic system would collapse well before that. People now realize it doesnt work. It worked between 2000-2005. There was stability up until 2008, he said. But now its useless, even for the corrupt people who benefit from it.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny goes on trial
17 April 2013 - One of Russia's leading opposition figures, Alexei Navalny, has gone on trial for embezzlement.

Federal investigators in Moscow brought the charges over a timber deal in the Kirov region in which he was involved as an unofficial adviser in 2009. The 36-year-old, known for his blogs denouncing President Vladimir Putin's United Russia party as crooks, faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. After a short hearing, the judge adjourned the case for a week.

'Fabricated'

Mr Navalny's trial began at 09:10 local time (05:10 GMT) at the Leninsky court in the remote city of Kirov, 900km (550 miles) north-east of Moscow. He is accused of involvement in the misappropriation of 16m roubles (£300,000; $500,000) from a timber firm he was advising in 2009 while working as an adviser to Kirov's governor, Nikita Belykh. Almost immediately, the defence asked the judge for the trial to be adjourned until next month, arguing that lawyers had not had enough time to prepare the case. Mr Navalny is the most high-profile opposition figure to be tried since anti-Putin protests 16 months ago, which saw the biggest demonstrations in Moscow since the fall of the USSR.

Since Mr Putin's re-election last March, legal action against opposition figures has increased markedly. Tough laws have been passed on public order offences and tight curbs placed on non-governmental organisations. Dressed in a white shirt and jeans, Mr Navalny told the court he fully backed the proposal to adjourn the case, complaining that it was far from his home in Moscow. The judge agreed to an adjournment but said the trial would resume on 24 April. Mr Navalny has accused Mr Putin of personally ordering the case against him and has called the charges "absurd". In a recent interview with the BBC's Daniel Sandford, Mr Navalny said the charges were "blatantly fabricated".

But he said it was important for the Kremlin to bring this case against him in order to try to discredit him. "If you put an anti-corruption activist into prison for participating in a political protest, it will only help his publicity. But if you say that he is corrupt" Analysts say his conviction would be a major blow to an opposition which for years suffered the lack of a central figure or platform. Distancing Mr Putin from the case, his spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said that the leader would not be following it.

While Putin still enjoys approval ratings that would be the envy of any Western leader, the Kremlin-run United Russia party, which includes the bureaucracy nationwide, has been widely despised for corruption, nepotism and inefficiency. Navalny seized on that anger with a campaign to brand United Russia as "the party of crooks and thieves" and urged his followers to vote for any other of the parties running in the December 2011 parliamentary elections. United Russia ended up with its worst result ever and had to rely on massive vote-rigging - documented by independent observers - to retain its majority in parliament.

PROTEST MOVEMENT:

The egregious ballot fraud in the 2011 parliamentary vote triggered a series of massive street protests in Moscow that attracted up to 100,000 demonstrators who opposed Putin's return to the presidency. Navalny rose to rock star status, electrifying crowds by chanting "We are the power!" and claiming that "we have enough people to seize the Kremlin." Some said, however, that Navalny missed his chance by failing to enter the 2012 presidential race and focusing instead on promoting an election to an opposition alternative parliament that quickly fizzled into irrelevance. After Putin won a third presidential term in March 2012, the Kremlin responded to the opposition with a series of searches and arrests of activists, a package of repressive laws that hiked fines 150-fold for participants in unsanctioned protests and tight new restrictions on non-government organizations.

Russia Prosecutor Seeks 6 Years in Jail for Putin Critic Navalny

A Russian prosecutor demanded a six-year prison term for Alexey Navalny, who’s on trial for fraud, in a case the leading opponent of President Vladimir Putin has said is politically motivated.
The prosecutor in Kirov, 900 kilometers (560 miles) northeast of Moscow, also asked the court to fine Navalny 1 million rubles ($30,000) over charges that he defrauded state timber company Kirovles of 16 million rubles. He may be jailed immediately in case of a guilty verdict even if the sentence is being appealed.
Navalny, 37, who faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, denies any wrongdoing and says the case is payback for helping lead protests in 2011 that were the biggest against Putin’s 13-year rule.
Putin, 60, has sought to rein in dissent since his 2012 return to the presidency. Some protesters have been imprisoned after a rally in May last year turned violent, while non-government organizations that get funding from abroad are being threatened with fines or possible closing unless they declare themselves foreign agents.
Sergei Guriev, an economist who advised the government and served as rector of the New Economic School in Moscow, fled to Paris in April, fearing prosecution because of his ties to Navalny. Guriev is advising the opposition leader on his bid for election as Moscow mayor in September.
Russia was the lowest-ranked Group of Eight nation in Berlin-based Transparency International 2012 Corruption Perceptions Index. Net capital outflows reached $54 billion last year and exceeded $38 billion in the first six months of 2013, preliminary central bank data show.

No Stalinism
Putin in April denied he’s resorting to Stalin-era tactics by locking up opponents.
“Stalinism is about a cult of personality and mass violations of the law, with repression and camps,” Putin said in response to a question about Navalny during a televised call-in show.

“There’s no such thing in Russia and I hope there never will be. No one is being jailed for political reasons.”
Investigators allege Navalny and two others embezzled more than 10,000 cubic meters of wood products at state-owned Kirovles between May and September 2009. The Investigative Committee says that Navalny threatened the manager of the timber company with dismissal to pressure him into signing a contract with another company, Vyatskaya Lesnaya Kompaniya.

‘Political Revenge’
Navalny, a blogger and anti-corruption activist who has uncovered alleged wrongdoing at state companies, was working at the time as an unpaid adviser on corporate governance in Kirov to regional governor Nikita Belykh, who’s defended him.
Federal investigators twice overruled regional prosecutors who’d dropped the case against Navalny. He has denounced the proceedings as “political revenge” and vowed to keep up his campaign to uncover fraud at state companies.
The trial follows the case against three members of all-female punk group (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) Riot, who were convicted last August after a protest targeting Putin inside Moscow’s Christ the Savior cathedral. One was later freed on appeal.
Russian authorities opened a fourth criminal case against Navalny on April 18, with all relating to separate cases of alleged fraud. The trial will be conducted “absolutely objectively,” according to Putin.

Russian protest leader Alexei Navalny has been sentenced to five years in jail for theft and embezzlement.
Judge Sergei Blinov said the anti-corruption campaigner had defrauded a timber firm.
Navalny has always insisted the trial was politically motivated, due to his opposition to President Vladimir Putin.
Minutes before he was handcuffed and led away, he urged his supporters to continue his struggle, tweeting: "Don't sit around doing nothing."
The 37-year-old had been a leading campaigner against Mr Putin's United Russia party, and regularly blogged about allegations of corruption.
Navalny had recently said he would like to stand for president. He has already registered his candidature for Moscow mayor.
The BBC's Moscow correspondent Daniel Sandford says that when the sentence was handed down, there were tears from his supporters and an explosion of anger on the social networking sites that he has used so effectively.
Anti-Putin activist and former cabinet minister Boris Nemtsov told reporters the trial was "completely fabricated from start to finish, and even the judge could not say what the reason for the crime was".
His supporters in Moscow have vowed to stage protests against the verdict later on Thursday.
The European Union has condemned the verdict, with a spokesperson for the EU's top foreign policy official, Catherine Ashton, saying the embezzlement charges were unsubstantiated, and that his jailing posed "serious questions as to the state of the rule of law in Russia".
'Almost inevitable'
Navalny arrived at the courtroom in Kirov to hear the verdict after a 12-hour overnight train journey from Moscow.
Our correspondent said Navalny smiled in a resigned manner when the almost inevitable guilty verdict came.
His wife, Yulia Navalnaya, said her husband knew he would get a non-suspended sentence and was mentally prepared to go to prison.
Navalny was found guilty of heading a group that embezzled 16m rubles ($500,000, £330,000) worth of timber from the Kirovles state timber company while working as an adviser to Kirov's governor Nikita Belykh.
The prosecution had asked for a six year jail sentence, but judge Sergei Blinov decided on five years, and said there were no extenuating circumstances that would warrant keeping Navalny out of prison.
Navalny's co-accused, Pyotr Ofitserov, was also found guilty, and given a four-year jail sentence.

Yes, it is ridiculous. I, personally, would prefer court to let him screw himself on the elections and then put him where he belongs to.

No doubt Russia and US have many difficulties and glaring contradictions , but also Russia and US to fight terrorism together . Russia and the West have a good business relationship lately.
