Neither OS gets hacked very much (I have never known anyone with an iOS device that has been hacked either), but it isnt because Apple or Android is special. It is because they are both based on Linux, which is resistant to hacking and viruses.

They are not immune, but they are resistant.

Will see malware in 2011.... Not that it have and you won't see any if you don't jailbreak them, that's the point.

You're the one trying to pass your exaggeration as facts, not I.

And a lot of people do jailbreak. They have to in order to get around all its limitations. Most people I know with iOS devices jailbreak them.

LOL, yeah, implying that viruses are rampant on Android isnt an exaggeration huh?

    Linux is awesome.

My own bias aside, the best decision Apple ever made was to dump its own OS in favor of a new one based on Linux. That fixed a lot of problems for them. Linux is very resilient.

I had Linux dual booting on my PC for a while. I actually liked it a lot, but when I had it, it was not very intuitive. Only a nerd would be able to use it effectively. I have not tried any of the current commercial versions like redhat...frankly, Windows 7 is now so good I have a lot less interest in Linux.

    They were right.

The reason Linux never caught on is because it is not backed by a major company. It is still basically a community project. So it doesnt get dedicated support like Windows and iWhatever does.

Linux is extremely stable and extremely resistant to viruses and extremely customizable. But due to legal issues no one can "own" it, so no big company can offer it as their own product. They can tweak it for their own use as a custom version (Android, OSX, iOS), but the OS itself cant be owned by anyone.

Ubuntu is a version of Linux that is sold commercially. Redhat is another one.

I like both. Linux is a good fallback for people who dont have a lot of money, because it is much more efficient than windows and can run well on much slower hardware. The only real downside to Linux is that it is the red headed stepchild of the software industry. Game and app developers will sometimes support it, but not often.

And what is mainstream? Your own precious iPhone uses Linux. So does your Macbook.

The only mainstream OS that isnt based on Linux is Windows. And it is only successful, frankly, because Microsoft has thrown tons of money at it over the years. (It did pay off though...Windows 7 is awesome)

There are virus on android. There aren't any on iOS if you use it as designed.
The vast majority of user never jailbreak their phone, there isn't any real use for it anyway with all the apps available in the app store. The only one who does are little script kiddies or dumb (*)(*)(*)(*) who prefer to steal software instead of buying it.

iOS isn't based on linux but on Unix... There is a difference. iOS is based on Darwin which is based on BSD.

Not much of a difference...Linux itself is based on Unix.

So why is it I have never actually seen one? Is it that they dont exist or that they are so rare that I dont have to worry about them anyway?

    LOL

    Jailbreaking is common on iOS.

"More than 10%" is not a trivial number. And that is just iPhones...that doesnt count other iOS devices.

Gee, if there isnt any use for it why are so many poeople doing it? Keep in mind that they do this DESPITE the risk of voicing their warranty. Jailbreaking is important enough to them that they are willing to risk voiding their warranty over it.

    1 in 10 is a lot.

    LOL!

Um...try 10 or 11 million. A little more than a couple thousand, wouldnt you say?

Yes, there are MILLIONS of jailbroken iPhones.

Do I have to be special to have actually seen a virus? You claim they are not rare, yet I have never seen one. Despite all the Android users I know.

Hey, if you have evidence that these viruses are common, please, feel free to post it. So far all you have provided is vague implication based on you personal opinion.

They are common enough to warant warnings on the web and in printed magazines. I've post some links before, I bet you didn't even read them.

And, as per your OWN number, 90% don't jailbreak... ever... nada...

    10%<90%... Capitch?

How juvenile of you for not quoting the whole post BTW.

I think I should at least know someone who has seen it at least once for it to be labelled "common". Do you think thats reasonable?

How many Android phones have been infected with viruses? It must be practically zero since you consider 10% to be such a low number.

10% is millions. If you know ten people with iPhones, at least one of them is jailbroken.

Why did you want to jailbreak it? I thought you said all you care about is that it works and looks pretty.

Personally as a guy who's a fan of .NET programming I'm probably going to get a windows phone as soon as I get a real salary. It's the easiest to develop apps for. Maybe I'll even pay for my cell phone bills with a decent app.

I dont hate WP7 (for that matter I dont hate iOS either). But it follows the closed iOS model. THAT is the part I hate. And thats the reason I will never own a WP7 device so long as Android is an alternative.

The new Android Market looks distinctly WP7...

I like the UIs for both WP7 and iOS...I just dont like their model. I want to see the closed model fail.

It is a good idea if you want the additional features. If all you care about is that it "works" and your phone looks good, then it is a waste of time.

I have a friend that works at a wireless phone tech support call center. She can take any phone she wants and use it for as long as she wants whenever she wants.

I have never actually used a Windows 7 phone, but she was telling me how bad they suck. The system is about as laggy as it can be and the OS is little more than the Zune OS (which sucks) with a telephone app added to it.

The ONLY reason you should git a WP7 is if you have an xbox 360 and you want to use it in conjunction with your Kinect. The OS (which has absolutely nothing to do with the awesomeness that is Windows 7) is laggy, unresponsive and crashes a lot. Windows isn't a serious player in the phone market.

Maybe instead of an iPhone, but even then, Zune software isn't much better than iTunes. I think I would even recommend an iPhone over WP7 phone. Or even RIM over WP7.

If you get one, mark my words, you will trade it for something that doesn't suck as bad in the first month.
