Why does this happen? Because the politicians take corporate bribes. Business sees these invaders as more customers and cheap labor while the taxpayers are stuck with the social costs. The aussies should rise up and drag their leaders out of their mansions and hang them.

Well, for one thing, they mustbe much more lax now that years ago, because I casually looked into it, years back, and even as a British guy, there was a lot of criterea. Unless, for some reason, it is actually harder to migrate there if you are European, than if you are not. I don't know, it was ages ago I looked at it, and then only half hearted.

So, where are you going with this, OP? Criticism of what you may see as ill thought out immigration is one thing, but are you thinking that the immigrants will outbreed the natives, thus allowing them to outnumber the 'white' Ozzies?

To the stage where there are almost no whites in Oz, in a couple of generations, is that where you are at with this?

Or is it that you feel it will be undermined in other ways, for instance, are you more worried about the social impact, housing, jobs, changing laws to accomodate their needs, etc..?

Doesnt the Gillard Govt want to take that up to 25,000 per year? Meanwhile reports show after 5 years 80% refugees rely almost entirely on welfare? Over a 5 year period thats 125,000 which is larger than most regional cities of which 80% will funded by the tax payer. Immigration is fine, without altering the demographics too much which has social issues, just link it to manufacturing. It makes little sense to me to have a shrinking manufacturing sector which feeds the service sector while keeping high low-skilled immigration. Tax more to maintain the welfare, wage pressure to cover lower living standards from additional taxes - the less competitive we are.

This issue is stirring up anti-immigration sentiment in Australia and Gillard cannot afford to go soft on asylum seekers by allowing them to stay in Australia while their applications are processed and she will only fall prey to Murdock's right-wing media if she goes ahead with the new humanitarian asylum policy and the Australian published an article which mocked Gillard as a "hero" for asylum seekers in Indonesia yesterday.

The OP mentioned Indonesia. Indonesia is not on the list of countries where people can come to Australia with refugee status,, nether can Sri Lankans.

Indonesians are welcome to apply to immigrate to Australia, but as refugees,, no.
