This principal is losing her job as a result of telling the students to speak English while on the school's campus. Every other group who has 'migrated' to the U.S. has been expected to learn and speak English. Why? Because that's our language here. When a family member of mine had to live in Germany for a couple of years, her American children were placed into German schools....with no one that spoke English to them. No one! They were immersed in the German language and while pretty lost for a while, eventually picked a lot of it up. These are Middle School children. And this is northwest Houston.....it's not a school on the border.....it's northwest Houston. And of course, Hispanic advocacy groups are asking the DOJ to investigate for "civil rights" violations. So, what else is new, eh?

"HEMPSTEAD - The Hempstead school board won't renew the contract of a principal who instructed her students not to speak Spanish, in a rapidly-evolving district where more than half of the students, like many Texas schools, are now Hispanic.

Hempstead Middle School Principal Amy Lacey was placed on paid administrative leave in December after reportedly announcing, via intercom, that students were not to speak Spanish on the school's campus. The Hispanic population of the rural area, roughly 50 miles northwest of Houston, is growing quickly, and Latino advocates say that it's important to allow Spanish in public schools.

"When you start banning aspects of ethnicity or cultural identity," says Augustin Pinedo, director of the League of United Latin American Citizens Region 18, "it sends the message that the child is not wanted: 'We don't want your color. We don't want your kind.' They then tend to drop out early."

Such fast growth is pervasive in Texas, says Steve Murdock, a professor at Rice University and director of the Hobby Center for the Study of Texas. Half of all Texas public-school students are now Hispanic, he notes. "When you look at issues related to education in Texas, to a great extent, you're looking at the education of Hispanic children."

Similar growth patterns, he says, hold true for the rest of the United States: "It's not just Texas."

Civil rights advocates say Lacey's suspension may have set off a campaign to intimidate Hispanics, including the district's superintendent, Delma Flores-Smith. They are calling for the Department of Justice and the FBI to investigate possible civil rights violations. An FBI spokesman would not confirm an investigation."

Could you point me to some legislation that makes English the official language of the United States. And by what mark do you claim to speak English in the first place?

They where right to do so considering the area, maybe she can find a job in your neck of the woods. Pssst nearly all Germans speak English, especially school children, I know I attended school there as did my children.

Really your heritage is so frail that people speaking spanish to school kids that do not know English well endangers it. Kinda sad to hear. Glad to know mine isn't, half Irish half German.

    That's interesting.

Presumably your principal only speaks English and I assume she found it her duty to ensure that languages she could not understand should not be used if an act of terrorism was being planned by using a foreign tongue.

She should contact the media and publicise the fact that she is prevented from upholding public safety by those who chose to dismiss her. After all, were it to happen, she would be the first in line of (excuse the pun) fire from the media and presumably local politicians who would want to distance themselves from such an event by laying the blame at her door.

    English should be spoken
It is reasonable and proper that English be spoken in America's public schools. However, this report reveals something even more egregious: the fact that a public school principal could be so ignorant. One would expect a highly paid and educated public servant to know better than to commit such an infraction.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse
Even if the principal is not fired for ordering Hispanic students to speak English on campus, she should be fired for being so ignorant of the well established and publicized laws of political correctness.

^^^^ This is an utterly stupid and/or ignorant statement.

It is "Settled Education" that immersion is the best way to learn a language. This principal was 100% correct. Only someone either mean or a fool would not push for English only for these kids. How are they going to compete? This is just evil.

Technically, she violated state law in section 2054.116 of the Government Code. Other than that, it is not a civil rights issue IMO.

I can understand requiring students to speak English in a classroom but this principle tried to single-handedly disallow other languages on the entire campus?

It's understandable that people were upset with her. What a stupid thing to try and do.

This is 'merica, best damn country ever, and here we speak English! Not well, or as Americans would say, not too good.

This principal's decree seems silly. In class? Maybe English only, if not an ESL class. On campus entirely? (*)(*)(*)(*)ing ridiculous.

In case folks have forgotten, we have always been a multi-lingual country. For 'mericans, that means more than one language.

    Louisiana Creole.

Here's one most folks have not heard of. Bootling.

    German.

But damn, them Hispanic kids speak Spanish on the playground, and that is bad!

Note, I am reminded of the following saying.

"If you can speak three languages you're trilingual. If you can speak two languages you're bilingual. If you can speak only one language you're an American."

WTF are you talking about? Hate people? Hating them is not allowing them the full immersion technique which is without any debate the best way to learn a new language. These kids will be crippled as a group when it comes to competing for jobs because of morons that deprive them of the best language teaching technique known.

You are correct. These kids most likely speak Spanish at home, each morning, evening, and weekends. Is it too much to ask that they speak English 8 hours a day, 5 days a week? No. After all, it is not doing them any favors to NOT do so. These are Middle School kids....and if they don't know it well by now, it becomes harder and harder for them. Hard for them In high school, colleges, and competing for jobs.

Spanish, German, and of course... English. I have spent a ton of time in Baja Mexico from the age of 7. German through a long term relationship.

You are clearly ignorant on language and the absolute best way to learn it is immersion. You Liberals with your P.C. bull crap are hurting these kids in significant ways, but that's alright as long as it's P.C. How entirely evil you all clearly are. You put your ideology over their future.

You didn't answer the question: Are we an English-speaking nation....or not?

When an American goes to college.....what language are the courses taught in? (Unless they are to learn another language)
When they go to movies at AMC or Cinemark over the week-end....what language is that movie shown in?
When they go to almost any business to shop....what language is spoken?
When one goes to interview at an American business.....what language is the interview conducted in?
When one goes shopping at the malls, what language are the store clerks speaking in?
When one goes to purchase a car at the car dealership, what is the primary language spoken by salesmen, servicemen, or clerks?
Are American business required to have an Hispanic-speaking employee for purposes of conversing with Hispanic-speaking customers?

Now......there are always exceptions here and there to any of those questions.....but I think it's generally accepted by anyone who just doesn't want to argue for argument sake....that the United States of America IS an English-speaking nation. Now......one can speak whatever they want to.....but they'd best learn English to get ahead.
