(Audio) Prof. Sabel: Palestinian State Would Not Join International Criminal Court To Avoid Exposing Palestinians To Prosecution Dr. Aaron Lerner - IMRA 25 September 2011 For the audio: http://youtu.be/4q_eSQKF74M in Hebrew Hebrew University International Law Professor Robbie Sabel (Former Legal Adviser Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs) On Israel Radio Middle East Magazine 25 September 2011 Question: Would a Palestinian state join the International Criminal Court? Answer: Doubtful. Because the moment a state joins, assume Palestine joins, this means that every Palestinian citizens who carries out a war crime in the future can expect to be subject to the authority of the court. For this reason, by the way, Lebanon didn’t join, Syria didn’t join, Egypt didn’t join, nor Saudi Arabia. Why? Because they don’t want their citizens to be subject to it. Since shooting at civilians is considered a war crime I don’t assume that the Hamas partner of the PA would be so happy with joining the Court. -------------------------------------------- IMRA - Independent Media Review and Analysis Website: www.imra.org.il
A Jewish law professor says? Does not mean anything at all as it is up to the Palestinians to decide not him and I bet they do decide to join just so they can prosecute all those Israeli war criminals. Fact is the Israelis are crapping in their pants at the prospect of the Palestinians being able to go to the ICC
I think the last people in the world who should be asking about Palestine joining the ICC and ICJ should be an Americans or Israelis. Maybe when they both join the ICC and ICJ with the rest of the world Palestine will do the same. Hypocrites!
I agree, Adu Sina. Well spotted. What's the point of poking the Palestinians saying that they would not join and ratify the ICC when by not doing so, both Israel and the USA have bought tickets on EXACTLY the same train, along with the Arab countries, the 'Stans and Russia. Come and join the world of the Just, you two, if you want credibility when you trumpet 'jus in bello'. Try to keep up with the Euro-zone and Latin America if you can.
