yup, ive seen it done to cows where the rabbi is nearby saying some prayer i guess while the cow gets its throat slit and dies by bleeding out. either way, Halal or Kosher or chopping their heads off im gonna eat it lol. but i would like to see it done with less pain involved. i mean that animal is losing its life to feed us so i think some kind of respectable death should be in order.
I've seen it done in bedu camps.. Its pretty quick.. and the level of skill is apparent among those who don't scare the crap out of the animal before they slit is throat.
Is that all it is? That's typically how animals were historically slaughtered in America, simply because it's convenient. Though I think with a lot of animals it was typical to whack them unconscious first. And with small birds I think it was more whacking off the whole head as opposed to just the throat. I don't know if they did Turky like a big animal or a small bird. I think these days they've developed more humane electrical means to do it, but those are more expensive. I imagine a lot of companies would prefir to go back to the cheaper ways if they can come up with a decent excuse. This kosher/halal thing might be it.
I think it also includes a quick prayer for the animal, but I don't speak Arabic well and Hebrew not at all. One of my grandmothers use to chop the head of her chickens.. the other did this twirl and snap thing.. yuk

There aren't that many Muslims in the country, either as workers or as a segment to market to. I have a suspicion that what is happening is that the workers and owners are Christians or these days atheists and have simply gone back to the way they cheaply slaughtered animals in turn of the century Chicago slaughterhouses. Except now when PETA comes calling they can tell them to take it up with the lady in the Hijab, which probably shuts the protesters up quickly.
The halal method can't be any worse than the other aspects of modern meat preparation. I think if most of us actually visited a chicken house and observed the filth involved, a significant portion of us would be vegetarian by the next day. Slaughterhouses for beef aren't particularly appetizing either.
No, it is. The modern ways in which we kill animals like cows is much faster and more humane. The electrocution method, or the captive bolt pistol, result in almost instantaneous deaths. A single slash to the throat of a cow can take a very long period of time before the cow eventually succumbs to blood loss. This is especially true when the slash is not done correctly, and the traditional practice keeps the executioner from delivering a second slice to speed up the process of death. The animal must slowly and painfully bleed out. Some people may not care how the animals are killed, whether it's quick and painless, or if there is long periods of suffering involved. Obviously those people won't care. However, I would prefer the animals die quickly.
Ah, well, I was referring to the sanitation aspect. This is a good point about the humane side of it though.
I had NO IDEA I was Muslim in my youth! This is how we slaughtered rabbits. Chickens we just cut their head off, so I guess that has Muslim too! Them Muslims sure are sneaky! In fact, I think MOMS are Muslim TOO! I remember being told to WASH MY FEET!
