I agree, I have always been open to the possibility of a lab leak (if that's the case, most likely not intentional, and possibly from virus strains the WIV already had from previous bat research, see the Yunnan 2012 incident), as my posting history shows. What I dislike is the tendency of some posters to claim the lab leak is established and common knowledge, so they can use it as a political hammer. My view is that we'll never know the actual source of the virus, unless China is more cooperative, releasing ALL virus samples the VIW worked at before covid. Of course, even if they did this, the critics would still claim that they are hiding the relevant samples. The scientific problem here is really that the closest known Sars-Cov2 relative has only about 96% sequence identity. That's too far a bridge for to be either a natural or lab direct ancestor. There HAVE to be other strains inbetween. For our safety, it will be important to find them.
