Please pray for Bill's safety, 24 year old DeMar Hamlin who went into what appeared to be sudden cardiac arrest after making a tackle into tonight's game against the Bengals. After performing CPR for 15 minutes on the filed, Hamlin was taken away in an ambulance and the game was postponed by both teams. The current status of Hamlin is unknown. After taking another look at the tackle, it looks like he suffered a hit to the chest. I saw this happen live and it was pretty disturbing to watch. Both teams, totally shook up.

I guess we wait. I'm glad his mom was there to go to the hospital. Horrible. Let me know if you hear anything. Put it here. Thanks.

My husband survived sudden cardiac arrest during a heart attack. He was out on his boogie board in the Pacific 13 years ago. His friends saved his life. Kept him from drowning. An EMT ambulance happened to be on the beach. What are the odds? Lucky for him he had a beatable rhythm so the defibrillator worked for him when the CPR wouldn't. He had no pulse, and stopped breathing. They said the cold water helped his heart not to deteriorate. It took about 3 1/2 mins. to get him breathing on his own again. The longer one goes without oxygen, their chances for recovery diminish. My husband had some stents inserted and made a full recovery. Time is the essence. I heard DaMar is critical so this is deeply concerning as to if he will recover. Time is the essence when one goes down with sudden cardiac arrest because then brain death is the next immediate concern.

Glad to hear that your husband recovered and thankfully the EMT was there to help him

I worry whether Damar is being kept alive by machines or if he is breathing on his own

I feel horrible for his mother.

24 years old...you just never know.

Well, "critical condition" isn't something I'd normally pray for but it's better that what I was thinking 15 minutes ago.

I’m thinking if he was alive, this game would have gone on. I hate thinking that way, but players get hurt all the time, some seriously.

I am here near Cincinnati seeing the reports. The U of Cincinnati Medical center is a world class Trauma center and is less than 3 miles from the field so he was there rather quickly. There were reporters outside the center (and remain so, and there is no updates other than he was in critical condition). No one has explained exactly what happened at this time other than he collapsed and it was extremely traumatic but what caused it? no one has said

They were doing CPR for nine minutes on the field. So sad. The way all the players were reacting, it seemed beyond serious.

A current report-his vitals are close to normal but he is under anesthesia so they can insert a breathing tube

To my eyes, It appears Hamlin took a direct hit to the left the side of the chest. I suspect there was enough blunt force to his heart to interrupt heart rhythm. When I was an EMT, I never saw any instance where someone's heart stopped due to blunt force, but I have seen one instance where a Paramedic immediately resuscitated somone two seconds after the patient's heart stopped. Such a strike has the power to cause cardiac arrest if there's enough force (bat, ball), or restart the regular rhythm of the heart (Precordial Thump). Precordial Thumps can only be used by people that witnessed the onset of cardiac arrest. The way I was trained to restart the heart is through defibrillation via an AED, which is the machine that shocks the heart to restart the tiny electrical system within the heart.

When Hamlin stands up from the hit, he is suffering from cardiogenic shock from the blunt trauma. His body short circuits cause the body has finally registered that the blood flow has stopped, and he instantly collapses to the floor.

its a mild night in cincinnati: 57 degrees, There are a bunch of people outside the U of C Medical center-many wearing Bengals jerseys etc holding a candlelight vigil. Heavy rain is suspected tomorrow but right now, the warmer than normal temperatures is conducive to people gathering outside the hospital

This sort of thing is always terrible. Hopefully he recovers with no injury.

A bit over 8 years ago a young Australian cricketer who had played for the national side was hit at the base of the skull by a cricket ball while batting. He stood unsteadily for a moment and then collapsed. I can still picture it now. It turns out that the ball caused a very rare type of fracture in the wrong spot. While he lived for two days in a coma, he was effectively dead before he hit the ground. There was national mourning.

I think most of us can relate to a young person chasing a sporting dream. To see them struck down in such a way really hits hard. Lets hope this young man gets the chance to resume his dream unhindered.

Can I take this opportunity, in the name of this young man, to encourage everyone to learn how to do CPR. These days you do not have to do mouth to mouth as compressions only are enough. But the odds of you needing CPR on a relative or close friend are much higher than on a stranger because they are the people you spend most time with

It is not a difficult skill but if you do not have training please remember any attempt is better than no attempt

It is fortuitous, and perhaps planned, that Stayin’ Alive is the heartbeat rate. I always know this, and was trained in cpr. I know I can do the needful, if needed.

current report-he suffered a severe cardiac arrest on the field. His heart was restarted on the field. He is in critical condition at the best Level One Trauma center in the area-a hospital that was less than 3 miles from the field.
