To stop people from being attacked because there was 67 glassings last year. (*)(*)(*)(*) that, when I go out with friends we don't go anywhere until about midnight. How about punish those responsible? No, that's too hard.
Sorry my friend, one of the times we choose to disagree. I do know what you mean but you will get used to it. I agree it is those responsible who should pay, but this is becoming increasingly difficult due to many factors which really need their own discussion. As these problems escalate drastic measures will become necessary, without intelligent leadership this could be by more intense policing but experience shows that this usually escalates the problem disproportionately. When I was your age (lol here I go like some old codger, but), the pubs only opened from 10AM to 10PM and we all survived, went out, partied. Pubs and clubs under certain circumstances, if food was served, entertainment etc. Actually, even with those hours, 10am to 10pm, I grew up in Sydney, in a flat with a group of my peers, and we like you, sometimes never decided to go out until after midnight. You could, it was harder to find a place, security was better, only those determined would go out. Safety and Civil Liberty are more important, now you will ague that I am depriving civil liberties, but .. I'm not, I'm regulating business, I'm giving EVERY citizen the freedom to go where ever they want, when ever they want, without fear of being harassed or worse.
If I had my way I would see them closed at 10pm Monday to Thursday, midnight Friday and Saturday and closed Sunday.
The current lock out laws were supposed to be the magical fix. Making them close at 2am will do nothing. People will just drink harder and faster earlier to make up for the new closing time.
True, there is no magical fix, but it is something, if it only saves a few lives from being ruined. There comes a point where a society has to stand up or face the repercussions, it is after all in our hands initially. Cracker night (fireworks) is another example. Thousands of families it was a big night, usually all the relos would gather together and it was a great night. We have lost something there, a loss of innocence so to speak. What we didn't see, or most of us didn't, was the hundreds of children with eyes hanging on their cheek, the burns, or worse. Yes they asked for it, they knew the dangers, they were young, daring, experimental. We had to protect them from themselves, I miss it, but as you grow older you start to miss more and more, that's life. We are going too fast rushing headlong into the unknown. Soon there will need to be major changes either in our political/economic models we now have to address the widening inequality in wealth, or ... we are going to need to change our policing policies and laws. There is a lot of movies and computer games that predict possible outcomes. At the moment, hold a party so I can walk my grandson down the street, please! My grandfather walked his, my father walked his ...
Soft plastic cups? People who glass someone should be tried for attempted murder - publicize that and see how many people think its a smart move!!
And I thought Victoria was the nanny state! But we have a 2am lockout as well, which I don't agree with.
Surely banning glass and only allowing non shattering plastic will fix the glassing problem? I smell a different agenda.
