I'm going to get the car serviced but it would help in the meantime if I had an idea of what I was looking at.

I have a 1997 Ford Laser XLI and this afternoon, driving home from work, there was this electrical burning smell coming from the air con. I had the heater on as it was cold and it was on low, and the smell filtered out of the vents. I drove home slower than normal because it concerned me. The smell disappeared after a couple of minutes.

Been googling and can't work out what it might be. I know nothing about cars but I assume someone here might have an idea, and whether I should continue to drive the car or take a taxi instead?

The vents run through the ignition switch from the coils and under the engine passed the fuel injection and into the cabin so I would guess that its coming from electrical wiring around the spark plugs but I am not sure.

There alot of wires along the ventilation system so its probably best for a mechanic to look under the hood, I usually drive a car until it gives up on me and I have to replace the timing belts. From the sound of it an electrical problem is not serious, belts are worrisome.

probably a fan motor short or a bad bearing causing overheating. I had the same thing happen on my Jeep Wrangler last winter, odd thing was the fan kept running just had a burning smell.
