paranoia......China doesn't need any carriers to destroy the US if was so inclined ICBMs will do that...and it doesn't need carriers to destroy carriers, supersonic cruise missiles, ship land, air, and submarine based are the enemy of carriers not other carriers, then there are anti ship ballistic missiles as well...carriers are for regional force projection and for China that means the South China Sea...

Just keep an eye on the Panama Canal is all I'm saying. What we have in the Pacific now is not in question. Our ability to restore that fleet in a jiffy if it's numbers are systematically reduced may not be such a firm guarantee. China is good at one thing: numbers and sustaining a low-level bleeding down of her opponents and striking at a key joint at a key point in time.

    Just saying..

Ethereal stated - quite clearly - that being first is better than being second...to which you responded above.

That means that you are mistaken. Feel free to admit that you're mistaken, or be forced to concede that it isn't "American arrogance" at play in making such a plainly true statement, but - rather - non-American ignorance - and clearly emblematic of your screen name.

How could it possibly be more clear than Ethereal put it? It is best to have the best Navy. What part of that eludes your comprehension skills?

Oh, don't kid yourself. You're not part of 'US'.

And from my vantage point, btw, it appears as though China has invested in us heavily, and we them. No better way to ensure peace than to require a business relationship.

Yeah, a business relationship like ones in the mafia. My advice would be, conduct business but watch your back..

So what? China can't bloody hide the thing if its out to see, and we have multiple subs in the area. More than enough to take care of it, and still be armed with enough warheads to take out every major population center in china.

and the Chinese don't have attack subs in the area, the Chinese don't have Ballistic subs? the Chinese don't have enough warheads to take out every major population center in the USA?...ya they do...

you keep playing this silly game "ours is bigger than theirs" but it just doesn't matter dead is dead...there can be no winner in exchange of nuclear warheads between super powers, the Chinese understand the concept their nuclear deterrence force is as big as it needs to be to destroy the USA...

Any war can be won, including a nuclear war.

However, they could produce as well as us...AND throw 3 times as many soldiers at us. Imagine if Russia in WWII had our production lines and efficiency, they would have been in Berlin in about 3 months after the Nazi's attacked them.

"Throw" soldiers at us HOW? Have them walk across the Pacific?!

The last true blue-water navy the Chinese had was commanded by Admiral Zheng He.

We don't wage war as you suggest. Ballistic missile subs do not engage enemy shipping, they hide and hope to be unnoticed.

The kind you speak of are few and far between, attack subs and divided over two oceans and repair facilities...we do not have near enough for a war any longer and have no plans to build any.

Yep, if we kill 99.9% of China's population, and they only kill 95% of ours, we "win".

    That's just plain idiotic.

A Chinese invasion fleet wouldn't have to worry about our fleet hitting them. They'd be detected thousands of miles from our coast and annihilated by wave after wave of air force bombers carrying anti-ship cruise missiles.

The whole notion of them invading Mexico without us reacting is just as stupid.

And I love how you are just handwaving the idea that China could invade us in the first place. We had complete naval and air supremacy on June 6th, 1944, an almost 4 to 1 advantage in manpower at the invasion point, years of experience in conducting amphib landings onto hostile beaches, and a massive industrial stockpile ready to move and we were BARELY able to pull off an invasion across less than 100 miles of relatively calm water.

How the (*)(*)(*)(*) exactly is China going to conduct an amphibious invasion across thousands of miles of rough seas when they have never conducted an amphibious invasion EVER?

I'm surprised you decided to terminate our exchanges? Surely you know that we are now through.

What would be funny...lol...is if some of our military control hardware or missile hardware/software was made in China and they had some sort of trojan device rendering those bombers grounded in my hypothetical situation.

Nah....it's not like the US trusts China that much that they would purchase parts "made in China" for military products..lol...

Bear in mind, I'm just trying to play devil's advocate here. Better safe than sorry..

China's navy isn't that much of a threat. When they become a Blue Ocean Navy they will truly tip the balance of power and possible cause a power transition...from the realist perspective at least.

Silhouette, is your scenario of a Trojan device just a belief or have you researched the production of US military equipment?

You forgot to put "Navy" in quotes. Our coast guard alone could probably handle their navy. And that is not even an exaggeration...their Navy sucks that much.

If China really had that capability, they would have invaded Taiwan long ago. Our backing of Taiwan is an enormous thorn in their side.

And um...we have no critical technology that comes from China. It the exact opposite. They have no military hardware that we would want.

What exactly leads you to believe that they can kill 95% of our population?

He is right...any war can be won. The fact that they have nukes does not necessarily mean as much as you seem to think it does. China is not the Soviet Union.

LOL! How will they get the soldiers here? Are they all going to swim? Are they going to mail them here?

Last time they tried they were under the control of the Mongols and were attempting to take Japan. Monsoons destroyed the fleets on both occasions (which is why Monsoon means "divine wind" in Japanese)

The prevailing view in China is that America and China are engaged in a titanic struggle on a zero sum basis. The Chinese believe they are winning this struggle, and that America will soon be a spent force. The Chinese who believe in co-existence in a symbiotic world have zero power.

Well after slumming around with the Russians for awhile, I'm sure Chinese leadership can display a flexible change in their world view. If the price is right..

The Chinese are winning. They see no need to change. The US thought China would become a responsible stakeholder in a globalized world. The US was wrong.
