The reason for those "draconian" measures is not because of where things currently stand, but because of where they are likely to go in the absence of those draconian measures.

The most conservative estimate from the CDC is 200,000 dead Americans. The upper range for their model is 1.7 million.

F that nonsense. Trump was slow to push these kinds of recommendations and that was mistake.

What grand experiment? What loss of human rights? This is temporary. It is necessary to prevent a disaster that would be far worse.

I'm not being told to do anything I wouldn't be doing anyway.

And they have absolutely NO basis for them. How much longer are they going to employ these draconian measures? Aren't they worried about releasing the recovered, if in fact 200,000 is going to die?

Enough. We must demand that they use real-time evidence(not theories) to actually evaluate the situation. The only difference between their blustering and Trump's, is that they have a lab coat on.

This is the exact same as Crossfire Hurricane. With the power vested in the badge and the gavel, let's trust them implicitly.

More than that, he trivialized and discredited claims of the seriousness until two days ago. Who knows how many lives that will cost! Apparently someone finally got it through his thick head that this is no joke.

The country is not aiming for 60 percent of the populace to get COVID-19, but you’d be forgiven for thinking so based on how badly the actual plan has been explained.

It crossed my mind his test result might not have been so negative as he said - either that or someone has pointed out to him that he cannot magic it away so what people will be thinking about when they vote is how well he dealt with it...denial of reality and the results of that does not come up so good..

The number of new cases can 'double', all it wants(and it hasn't doubled. Or we in the US for example should have 8,450 cases by the 20th. If we don't have that, that should be the first indication to you that Farci is full of more hot air than Trump.

In response to the "crisis" Trump plans to adopt the Dem approach and buy votes with free money. Oh well. What's 850 Billion added to over 22 Trillion of debt.

    https://www.breitbart.com/politics/...nts-to-send-checks-to-households-immediately/ But

I am going to have to rethink my past comments to people on this forum who claim Trump is an idiot. I don't think he is an idiot, But I am starting to think he is a good example of a variation of the Peter Principle at work -- i.e., Trump has not reached a level of incompetence within a single hierarchical organization. rather he has achieved incompetence by moving from one field (business/entertainment) to another field (politics).

There are some winners in this: For one, Grubhub et al must be going like gangbusters. Also, delivery services for online orders are exploding.

Amazon to Hire 100,000 Warehouse and Delivery Workers Amid Coronavirus Shutdowns
Amazon.com Inc. plans to hire an additional 100,000 employees in the U.S. as millions of people turn to online deliveries at an unprecedented pace and Americans continue to reorient their lives to limit the spread of the new coronavirus...

I suspect that this will make a lasting mark on the way things are done. It may be the final nail in the coffin for many brick and mortar stores. And the old standard of showing up for work no matter how sick you might be, it not going to survive either. People are finally realizing that this puts everyone else at risk. It is just stupid. But I know of many companies that are still like this - if you don't show up for work you had better be dying.

Let's make this utterly clear for everyone:

-They don't know anything about the situation, they themselves brag that they don't know.
-Yet, despite not knowing anything(about anything), they do know enough that they must destroy the world global financial system(at least "temporarily") and our livelihood and food supply? Nah, screw that.

Our lives are being run by mathematicians with no real world experience(that's what happens when you're in a lab all day) and their failures are having real time financial consequences.

What's particularly embarrassing is that this is coming from a nation whose lore includes Thomas Paine's "Give me Liberty or give me death."

Mr. Paine, in this time of our history I regret to inform you that we chose neither liberty nor death. We chose cowardice. In the face not of facts, but on theories.

Oh, spare us the histrionics. None of us "like" what is happening, but something has to be done to keep from overwhelming our health care system, as happened in Italy, which has more beds and doctors per capita than we do.

If our system gets overwhelmed, people will start dying from things totally unrelated to Coronavirus simply due to that.

What is going on now is not sustainable .... everyone knows that. It will be temporary, though there will be a new normal after this has passed.

Did you look at the chart?
How many new cases on the 13th - 550
How many new cases on the 16th - 983

Sorry I was off by a few.

    Total cases 13th - 2247
    Total cases 16th - 4663

Off by a few in the other direction.

So yep. 8500 by the 20th.

    • A senior German disease control expert has warned that the coronavirus pandemic could continue for two years, depending on how long it takes for an effective vaccine to be developed and if people develop immunity after illness.
Speaking on Tuesday, the Robert Kock Institut's (RKI) president, Prof. Lothar Wieler, said pandemics tend to run their course in waves, and factors influencing how it unfolds from this point include how many people become immune to it after contracting the virus – and how quickly a vaccine is made.

The RKI, a German federal agency responsible for disease control and prevention, on Tuesday raised the country’s threat level from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic from ‘moderate’ to ‘high’.

It said the revision comes in light of the continuing increase in new infections of the rapidly-spreading virus, which originated in China late last year and whose symptoms range from fever to serious respiratory illness. Germany has recorded over 7,900 cases of Covid-19 to date, with 20 deaths.

New research from RKI scientists and the Helios clinic group also says that the novel coronavirus can more seriously afflict adults aged under 60 who have no underlying health conditions than similar patients suffering severe pneumonia in the regular flu season.

And it took us over a MONTH to get there. So when Jerome Adams looks at Italy, he should be looking not at what Italy was before, but what Italy is now. See, again: China.

The rate has been steadily declining in scope, and most importantly the whole country is already affected. These theorists suck at even their own theory. And what's worse, these people have the power to make these decisions.

Using your upper range given by the CDC what percentage do you get from those numbers based on a US population of 330 Million?
I am horrible at math but I come up with 1700000 is 0.51515151515152% of 330000000.
Using your lower number of 200,000 is way out of my league.

It's not only not sustainable. It isn't even allowable. The great US and its theory of freedom of liberty and expression has been brought down by a theory. We beat the AXIS, but I'm afraid a theory is just too much for us to handle.

As I've been saying: It's rather pathetic.
