2.5 million estimated dead in the U.S. if this mirrors the 1918 flu.

My ex-wife’s grandmother’s sister in Nebraska died in the 1918 flu outbreak.

True, but not this one. I feel bad for those who get sick, worse for those who die, but this is little more than a slightly amped flu. Our response has been pretty good, the rest of the world? Not so much. Good learning experience for the US and CDC. Hopefully this will finally get liberals to remember what the CDC is for, and its not inanimate objects like guns...

China has UHC, how'd that work out? Stay healthy Bowerbird, things would get boring without your foreign interventionist views...

The ABC in Australia has given a little nudge, not really a warning, that we should have medications, tinned food, pet food etc, for two weeks in case supply lines break down.

Take two large bulbs of garlic and trim the tops off to expose the cloves and boil them in a 4 quarts of water until they are totally boiled to putty. Then mash the shlt out of them and then filter the water thru a sieve and discard all the skins and stuff..

Sip this all day long during a cold or flu and eight ounces a day for a immune therapy! Also head to your local GNC or Walmart and grab a big bottle of vinegar tablets and Garlic tabs and take them everyday faithfully!!

    Be well guys!

The seasonal flu is not a 2% case fatality rate. You may have come across some info on pandemic flu, or in special populations. The seasonal flu has a case fatality rate of about 0.05% https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/h...-flu/509-f77c3224-600b-4aae-a62c-7b632abd2248

At a 2% (minimum) death rate for COVID-19, if 1/3 of the population is infected as was the case with the Spanish Flu, then 50 million people would die. That is not small. We have better containment strategies now than in 1918, and 1918 had people come back from the war, but overall our world is more connected making pandemics easier to spread.

The Spanish flu had a higher case fatality rate about 10%, and killed by cytokine storm - and so young people disproportionately died. COVID-19 seems to kill when it enters the lungs and causes pneumonia, so it kills people who are middle-aged to elderly, and smokers are at higher risk.

Overall, I would say its less of a threat than the Spanish flu, but much more of a threat than anything we've had recently. SARS and MERS had higher fatality rates, but seemed less able to be widely transmitted, and that's the main factor that allows damage because it doesn't take much of a case fatality rate to cause major damage with billions of hosts available.

The Trump administration gutted the infrastructure that would normally handle this issue in 2018.

Yeah. You should be afraid because this going to spread like wildfire in the U.S. We’re not prepared. Essentially we’re starting from scratch.

Plus, the administration will handle this as a political issue (it’s already started) rather than a health issue. They’re guaranteed to be disinformation central.

Diagnosis procedures, communication, and containment should have started weeks ago.

You are right in one regard... The liberals are making the allocated funds a political hot potato.

Same here. Like the flu, those with compromised immune systems, heart conditions and respiratory ailments are most at risk. Practice good hygiene, try to get someone else to do your shopping for you if you're at risk, and when they come out with an inoculation in about 18 months, get one.

I'm actually in Wisconsin now, I guess I never updated that. Pretty much the same though. It was 12 below zero not that long ago, and been steady around zero at night. Yesterday was a global warming extravaganza of temperatures over 35...
