OK, we got some food. But almost everything else comes from China.

Oh we can survive. It will just hurt US businesses that rely on cheap Chinese labor to produce their goods.

    Sure the USA can "survive".

As long as we don't mind paying double or triple for retail goods.

US businesses would probably shift to India, Pakistan or southeast Asia for cheap labor. There would be some recovery of manufacture in the US, but probably not as much as we would like. But there would definitely be a loss of sales to China (pork, soy beans, etc.). We would survive a trade war, but I doubt that the benefits would be more than the losses.

That shift in US business would result in significantly higher prices for consumers during and even after the transition.

The US imported $505 Billion from China compared to $435 Billion from the European Union.

It would take up to a year to make that transition.

The market can only sell for what the market will bear. It already does that.

I always hear liberals bemoaning the obscene profits corporate America is making. Wouldn't an increase in production cost result in lower profits? Isn't that a good thing as long as there is some profit?

The price of things can't go too high. If it does, people will buy less.

Could the USA survive if China didn't sell us stuff?

The question is could China survive, 18% of everything China exports goes to the USA consumers, that is nearly 5% of China's total GDP
4.6% of the United States exports go to China mostly food, German cars, forestry products, planes, and medical equipment which is barely over 1% of our (US) GDP.

The cost of your IPhone might go up, the biggest concern is will China grab ownership of those US corporate manufacturing plants that are partially state owned now.

If we had done this a year ago then it would be done by now.

Believe it or not, we use to make almost all we use now. Bad trade got us to lose most of it.
