With homelessness becoming an increasing problem, many cities are implementing architectural designs in their parks and public places in an attempt to drive away the homeless. Whether it's sprinklers timed to go on in intervals throughout the night or benches with arm rests in the middle so the homeless cannot lie down.

Some of these devices are just funny. "Anti-sit" architecture involves putting sharp spikes or protruding metal pegs to prevent the homeless from sitting down.

Some of the methods get down right creative:

This is an interesting article about the sociology of public places:
    http://everything2.com/user/kowalski/writeups/The+Militarization+and+Privatization+of+Public+Space

Benches in Honolulu bus stops were swapped out for round, concrete stools. Sarasota, Florida got rid of all the benches in its city parks. Manteca, California changed the sprinkler schedule from day to night in order to water any homeless who tried to sleep in a local park. The city of Minneapolis installed "bridge rods" -- pyramid structures meant to keep the homeless from sleeping under bridges. It hasn't worked -- apparently it helps people store their stuff -- but the effort costs the city $10,000 a year.

    I find this disgusting.

Instead of spending money to, I dunno, get the homeless off the street, they are spending money to get the homeless....to a different street.

I think "bums" are the ones sleeping in parks, and panhandling.

Homeless are the ones in shelters. All are chronically lazy.

If any are causing problems for your city, boot them out of town. Compassionate cities should create Poor Farms where these people and their families can live at least as well as folks did 150 years ago and learn about the true American way. Of course this requires all of them to do farm work, to have beads of sweat form on their bodies. Most wouldn't last a day.

I sort of agree with this in a way. The homeless should at least be given the option of living a stone-age existence in some forest somewhere, like their distant ancestors did thousands of years ago.

I do not believe most of the homeless are there by choice, I believe many have mental or physical issues that make them outcasts from society, it's sad, not sure what can be down about it, but this is silly what these folks are doing to target the homeless

That's doesn't work. You can build 200 homeless shelters and the dirty shiftless migrant bums will STILL sleep on the bus stop bench and pee in public.

No form of work-problem or assistance will help these lazy vagrants. and tha age level has dropped from "Old bums" to "Young bums" aka teenagers /..

It's a shame when TEENAGERS are doing the Bum thing. that's just Uber-Laziness

I blame the American School System

Part of the problem may be that, in many regions, the young have been displaced out of many of the jobs they once did a generation ago. I will put it to you this way: where you live, do you ever see any 18 year olds working at gas stations? Do you ever see teenagers mowing lawns? Is your newspaper delivered to you by a boy on a bicycle route? Do you see beautiful university-age girls helping construction crews on the side of the road? Are many of the waitresses under the age of 25 ? If the answer is no, there's the problem. Some people have become so used to this reality that they do not even recognise that anything is wrong. Then they wonder why their young adult children do not seem to want to find a job...

    And sex offenders...

    http://www.10news.com/news/high-number-of-sex-offenders-registering-as-homeless

In California, a law was passed preventing ex-criminals with sex crime histories from living anywhere near parks or schools. The problem was that all the cheap apartments usually tend to be located within the prohibited distance from a park or school. That is just the way most planned cities are laid out for some reason.

a point for that. but thtat's no excuse. these "kidbums", I like to call them, are just spolied brats that don't wannt think and be creative. so what if mcdonald's isn't hiring, go to Starbucks, not hiring?, go to Home Depot, you get the picture. you can't teach hustle. and if it's one thing I know, today's teens ain't got NO HUSTLE. nobody said there would be a Gap job waiting on them as they coast through highschool and life after highschool. we are in a competitive capitalistic society and only the strong survive. todays' teens have become tomorrow's homeless. right before our eyes.

so not only I do I blame the Public School System(keyword Public), I blame the hands-off-uninvolved minds-still-in-the-clubs-Parents. Deadbeats is all they are.

Well as the future of America being what it is, the "problem" of homelessness is bound to grow exponentially.

Its a shame that cities have to go to such lengths to drive out bums.

Round up all the "homeless" and send them to all the bleeding heart liberal cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Portland, Seattle. Let the libs put their money and lifestyle where their mouths are.

I had a friend who had a brother that was homeless. The guy (homeless brother) had a MBA and a law degree but also had schizophrenia and refused to take his medications. They got him back home several times but he'd just disappear one day and no one knew where he went. My friend said that his brother told him he preferred to live on the streets because he felt more 'natural' living that way.

That's just one person but I can certainly believe there are many more.

One shouldn't be too quick to blame him; some of the medications for schizophrenia can have really serious side effects.

I did not blame him at all. I was just relating facts about a homeless person that I was told by his brother. That's just 1 story and, as you can see, is quite complicated. Rounding them up and incarcerating them, ignoring them, trying to help them only exacerbates the problem. Making it uncomfortable for them to live on the streets may be the only real solution for a City inundated with homeless.

For lunch sometimes, I like to go to Burger King and buy a big sack full of Whoppers, and then I'll go down by the reservoir and hang out with the homeless guys.
They always appreciate the free food, and they have the most interesting tales to tell.

Sometimes I make them get undressed and allow me to photograph them naked before I'll share my hamburgers with them.
There's no film in the camera, but they don't know that.

    How funny is that?

You ever try to find a job when you have no address to list on the application, no shower, no shave, and no phone number? The jobs you get barely pay for food and nothing left over for shelter. This is what drives so many from the Republican party because it has so many hard assed extremists in it's midst it terrifies people.

I wanted to ask lets assume a homeless man is in his 40's, has a disability but not bad say a bad leg, did not work in two years and looked homeless - lets assume otherwise clean and no criminal issues or issues of substance abuse would you hire them? Its very simple if your longer term homeless your unemployable everything else could be fine but you will look worn, might be missing teeth, have no references or an address or even a phone and might have poor skills dated or not needed. Add to that with the Real ID laws in some states homeless can't get official ID which tosses them to the underground economy and that is the governments fault.

The reason I turned to Busking and other skills of self-employment its my only option and I make at best when working all out to my comfort level $8500 a year on the average enough for me as a single man to get by, usually renting off the books a couch or something simple and maintain a laptop and internet access. No cell phone or other frills. And I am disabled and have issues and am not a criminal or addict. And if I had to choose I would live homeless over spending it on a place I just have to decide what is important and well a housing situation might come way below other things.

Some people are just going to be hard to fit into the system and that has always been the case but since homeless shelters to many feel like prison, why would they go to them I wouldn't if I can make enough money its not needed homeless that income is more than enough to get by well.

You mean it terrifies liberals who would not let the homeless sleep on their front porches either.

    A thought I had:
If every city tries to drive away its homeless, where do all the homeless go?

I don't believe that is always how it is. When there is more plentiful job opportunities, and not enough workers, employers are willing to hire people they otherwise might not have been willing to hire. When there is less job opportunity, and too many people trying to get a job, employers become more selective.

With the high unemployment rate, both the old and young people without job experience are having trouble getting hired. Employers would rather hire immigrants. With the young and old having trouble getting a job, imagine how much more difficult it is for a homeless man with a bad leg and a criminal conviction in his past!

But really, I think in most cases it is just that these people are not willing to work in unpleasant jobs for low wages; they would rather be homeless. Whether that means they are to blame for their situation is the issue. I guess we have to ask ourselves what type of job opportunities are generally available for these people, and whether it is reasonable to expect all of them to do these jobs at the pay being offered.

Some homeless people lost their families in car accidents and are mentally ill as a result, and are virtually unemployable.
Many others are war veterans who are also mentally ill.

Time to stop all immigration, legal and illegal...there are far too many people in America already.
