I saw on the news last night that Russia has sent a nuclear submarine to Cuba. This reminds me of the Cuban Missile Crisis of the Kennedy presidency. They said at that time we were very, very close to having a nuclear showdown with Russia. We don't currently have a man of Kennedy's caliber and intelligence in the White House. And our world is much different than it was in the early 1960s. So, do any of you fear we are on the verge of nuclear war? Or is Vladimir Putin just bluffing? P.S. I am fearful. I want to know how others are feeling.
I voted I don’t care one way or the other because I always think it’s possible yet I don’t believe an exchange of nuclear warheads will lead to multiple exchanges either.
If a nuclear war starts, it will be Iran and North Korea leading the way. Russia is less likely, although Putin does have mental issues. The leaders of Iran, especially, are irrational. They probably think they could win in a nuclear exchange. They couldn't even land missiles on Israel.
The Biden Administration appears to be trying to repeat the breakup of the USSR that happened in 1989-1991, hoping this time to break up Russia. The reward would be the natural gas reserves in Russia and other goodies. It won't work.
What is going on is brinkmanship. Pres. Putin doesn't like it and nor do most people but the neocons in the Whitehouse and some in the State Department, and of course the ones in the Pentagon do like it. The neocons were betting that they could put any amount of weapons and raise an army of any size in Ukraine and that Putin would do nothing, and they were right. But when we shipped over 300 million in artillery and shells, the neo Nazis in the Ukrainian army used those to shell the Russian speaking city of Donetsk and Pres. Putin said he would respond and then he did, and moved forces in to capture some of the artillery and force Ukraine to pull it back a distance so it could no longer reach Dontetsk. The US labelled that as Russian aggression.
Unlike the 60’s Russia has nuclear missiles that can reach anywhere in the U.S. They don’t to bring warships or subs to Cuba to hit us. I voted a nuclear war is highly likely if the U.S. and NATO keeps infringing on Russia sovereignty. We would do the same if the roles were reversed.
I dunno if 'afraid' is the right word... But I have gas masks, water filtration, iodine and a G-T-F-O plan, and I'm still looking for an affordable and reliable Geiger counter. So I voted yes.
It is a good thing we picked Russia as an enemy because they are not keen to kill as many people as possible the way we are. For example our oops Vietnam was a mistake: 'we killed 3 million Vietnamese, but it was just a mistake, things like that happen.' The fear of nuclear war has the intent of making the public wake up (if that's possible) and say, "we aren't invulnerable, we can't just keep going to war with country after country feeling completely safe ourselves because we have an ocean on each side, trees to the North and desert to the South.
The US keeping large blast area bombs away from Israel. That will increase the likely thing that Isarel will use small area blast nukes in slowing down a large-scale Iran invasion.
Not at all, especially not the classic image of a nuclear war, with hundreds of ICBMs crossing over the Atlantic leaving North America and Europe radioactive wastelands. It is simply in nobodies interests to make that happen. Even if any one nation used a nuclear weapon, say in some kind of "surgical strike" or a tactical nuke on the battlefield, I don't think that would automatically lead to a nuclear retaliation and escalation, but it certainly would render the attacking nation and it's leaders international pariahs.
It's a good thing we have the stupidest people in charge of this country because that means they aren't in charge of the other countries.
Thank you all for your responses. There is a book I want to read written by Annie Jacobsen. The title is "Nuclear War, a scenario". I saw this lady on a YouTube podcast. She describes in great detail what would happen if we were hit by a nuclear bomb.
Nuclear War is something I have no control over or can’t help avoid. As such I don’t worry about it. If it happens, it happens, if it don’t, it don’t. Most of my life has been lived not worrying about things I can’t control or do anything about. I was in high school during the Cuban Missile Crisis, it is said that is the closest we ever came to a nuclear war with what was then the USSR.
sheeesh.....and posting on this chatsite as well!! You could've smacked my nuts with a wet turbot.......I didn't know you were in charge of this country......(whatever this country is...)
One way to avoid a nuclear war is not to start a war in the first place. The US politicians and media lie constantly about the current war, they always talk about how important it is when they are starting it, then eventually they forget it and move on to the next one. And we usually lose wars so we have to get the next one started right now or we will be at a loose end. There was plenty of warning the present war in Iraq was on the way:
Its hard to find tinfoil anymore. Mostly there's just aluminum foil. And its not great for you. Why you shouldn’t wrap your food in aluminium foil before cooking it (theconversation.com)
I think of tactical nukes as not just a midway between conventional explosives and big powerful thermonuclear bombs, but in another way as well. Taking a fairly common nuke, the yield can be selected at four settings, the lowest being 0.3 kt. That is 300 tons of TNT. A B-52 can carry 30 tons of bombs, so that's 10 B-52 loads. The Russian Federation has been trying to negotiate a way to avoid war in Ukraine, and as we all should know, in mid 2021 Congress voted to send 300 million dollars of weapons to Ukraine which the 'Azov battalion' put to good use by shelling Donetsk and the RF had to keep it's word and moved forces in to separate the attackers from Donetsk. If the US perseveres with the war then Russia has stated it will bomb as much as required, including a large area of Kyiv. Now take that thought a bit further. The RF can conventionally bomb airbases in Romania or Poland. But being very hypothetical here, what if Biden got in again and the war continued and worse. This is very what if, but what if Russia found it necessary to hit a very large complex in Washington DC, then sending across the ocean a fleet of heavy bombers would not be a good idea. But a small yield tactical nuke would do the same job and could be carried by missile that could not be intercepted. It's a question of removing the huge advantage the US has of being far away from the fighting, and understanding a low yield nuke as a compact more portable weapon. But I really don't think that's going to happen, and I really don't think Russia would skip the intermediate stages and go directly to unrestricted warfare unless the US does.
You damn well ought to care about nuclear war. Once that monster is out of the bottle, it could make the global warming claims look like a picnic.
After a nuclear war the living will eny the dead. Nothing could be more terrifying than to be alive after the nuclear catastrophy. Believe me.
