Thanks for the amusing story. To think blacks so valued the bible as to turn their land over made me laugh

You should read Hawaii by James Michener.

They didn't turn their land over. It was taken from them by various means. The same way America was taken from the Native Americans. Only difference is the Africans were able to reclaim their land eventually.

I looked up the book and the reviews. She was talking about Africa and how the dumb Africans took a Bible and turned in their land. I laughed.

As to Hawaii, I have been to 4 of the islands. Some several times. A lot of history can be learned there if one stops at the various places where they have sites set up to help learn the history.

A good bit of research helps a lot too.

Let me show you a photo of my daughter, her son and me on Kauai.

That sounds more real than what you earlier told us. Here the tribes accepted reparations and cash for land they actually did not allege they owned.

I would not trust the Africans to actually own land they put up for sale either.

The quote from the African man was not literal. What he was saying was that the missionaries stole their land from them using religion as a ruse.

The Africans weren't dumb. They were just very naive and trusting. They eventually wised up and gained their independence. At one time almost every country in Africa was colonized. Now they are all free.
    That's a nice picture. :)

The recommended book is a good case study of how missionaries take away land from native people. Maybe not Africa but a good case study nonetheless.

Understanding land ownership legal issues as i do, I tend to doubt the Africans actually owned land at all.

Here is why. Suppose you stop at the bank of any of the Great Lakes. Have you even one time asked who owns the lake? Think that over. Who owns Lake Tahoe or the Great Salt Lake. Who owns the Mississippi River or the Potomac River?

We experience land all the time. But until you are well acquainted with land ownership, you may see it like you see the Ocean. A thing to marvel at and see, but not to own.

Have you even once had a person tell you he owns his part of the Gulf of Mexico?

    Of course not.

To the primitives, the idea of land ownership was as whacked out as owning a part of the Pacific Ocean. Even now you ask who owns the oceans and see what you get told.

I read part of a link moments ago where it said in Africa land is so abundant, why is it so cheap? Who owns it in the first place?

I used to argue on Forums that Hawaii was stolen from the natives by America who then decided to convert it to a state. I do not recall the natives voting to make it a state.

I do not flip out over Africa the way you flip out over the place. Dumb means they do not understand. The way you told the story, they did not understand. Do you now understand?

in many ways, I see our country as colonized by the Feds. The feds in some states barely own land. But look at Alaska and Nevada and California. What they own wows me.

You must be thinking of a time many, many years ago.Go ask the Africans in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namblia, Mozambique or any other African country if they believe in land ownership and sée what they tell you.
Of course they believe in land ownership. They also believe in owning the rich natural resources that are in the land.

Actually in the USA the Feds own all the land. If we don't pay our property taxes they can take our homes, even if the house is paid for.
So, therefore we never truly own any land/homes. But if you are familiar with property law like you say, I'm sure you know that.

Robert, when you have time read, "Overthrow" by Stephen Kinzer. This is an excellent book that details exactly how the the Kingdom of Hawaii was taken over from the natives by the US govt in 1893. It contains several other stories of how the US led coup d'etats, invasions, etc. of many countries over the years. Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines are just a few of the places mentioned in this book.
Mr. Kinzer has done great research for his book. I think you'll find the section on Hawaii very interesting.

I agree with the book and have not read it. I studied Hawaii's history so for me it is a no brainer. I have also seen some of the history when visiting the various islands.

Frankly I must have 160 books yet to read.

Yes, it was many years back. When the Europeans showed up. Today things must be as you say.

Even in this country, you can walk on land that the only way to speak of it is that the magic fairy Government owns the land. We do not know who they are, but the magic Government fairies own the land.

Have you ever met in person those Feds? If you meet one, and he dies, does his family get to say they own the land? I call those Feds magic fairies. We hear about them but never see any owners called Feds.
Taxation as used today is a Democratic party invention. And since you explained how the govt. can steal your property, it may make you think again about property taxes.

How many of these laws do people stop to question? Why don't they stop to question the laws?

Anyone born in slavery, even on the very last day is owed reparations. August 20, 1866 is the day the civil war ended. That person would be 104 years old and I would gladly see that person(s) get reparations. Anyone else forget about it.
