EPA regs make new trucks much more expensive, less fuel-efficient, and less reliable. So truckers are keeping their old trucks and even fixing them up for years more service.

    http://dailycaller.com/2012/03/14/truck-dealers-study-says-epa-regulations-worthless-costly/

    quote:
“…costs to implement the regulations were two to five times higher than the EPA projected…”

    Taxcutter says:
Hardly surprising. The blockheads at the EPA never, ever get cost or benefit estimates even close to right. Talk about dumb…that’s the EPA.

    Quote:
“Compliance with the EPA’s requirements “directly resulted in higher truck prices, increased operating costs, reduced reliability, and lower file economic performance,”

“…to avoid the hassle and cost of the rules, many truck companies bought up trucks before the regulations went into effect…”

“Some companies simply held onto their older trucks, rather than replacing them with new trucks as they would have customarily done. “

    Taxcutter says:
I can see a business opportunity for enterprising mechanics to offer services extending the service lives of old trucks. That way truckers don’t have to buy the more expensive, inefficient and unreliable EPA trucks. America becomes like Cuba. Good replacements are unavailable, so you make do with refurbished old trucks.

    Quote:
“The lessons learned from this report apply directly to the proposed MY 2017-2025 fuel economy regulations for light-duty vehicles. That rulemaking, combined with previous Obama administration fuel economy mandates, will raise the average price of a vehicle by $3,000, according to EPA and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates. When faced with unreasonable federal regulatory mandates that increase motor vehicle costs, buyers of light-duty vehicles – similar to what commercial truck buyers experienced – will seek out less expensive alternatives in the marketplace.”

    Taxcutter says:
Already some mechanics are talking about plans to extend the service live of older cars.

As usual the EPA slime seeks to “force technology” and doesn’t give a rip what the consumer thinks. This is much like New Source Review (40 CFR 52.21). NSR made old plants irreplaceable. The only other option was to move the work offshore – away from the power of the EPA.

I suppose truck manufacturers thought they were gonna make a killing on expensive and unreliable new trucks.

Does the EPA think that people will just timidly acquiesce to its skullduggery?

In a few years there may be a lot of really old trucks running the roads - just like with US oil refineries and power plants thanks to 40 CFR 52.21.

Bureaucrats never seem to comprehend that someone might actually resist whatever rules that the administration decides to impose. Every time another rule is made that makes life harder, people just find better ways around it.

just take your pet hamster with you. for some reason, these no-idle laws are over-ridden by animal cruelty laws...like pets are more important than the people driving them around. :confuse:

they thought they'd make a killing selling "green trucks", DEF and the associated BS, but they didn't think that warranty repairs would be killing them. :skull:

No surprise, taxcutter. Once again the govt makes life harder on us all. The cost of regulations is an unseen tax. This is tyranny, plain and simple.

This is the government. They always get it wrong...it is what they do. The only difference between a romance novel and a government estimate is the romance novel can be entertaining.

It is why tax dodging is endemic in Italy...the outside of homes look very modest and the inside palatial as any overt sign of wealth is an invitation to the tax collectors.

    from the article

"When truckers did switch over to the new technology, reports found the engines to be less reliable and requiring of more maintenance. Moreover, they decreased the fuel economy performance of trucks. Statistics cited in the report found that that amounted to “a truck consuming an extra 800 additional gallons of fuel per year, on average.”

hmmm, so you not only get to pay more for the vehicle but you get to use more fuel. Another shining example of our govt at work

What is coming next is forced emission controls on falsified data like they Air Resource Board did in California. They are forcing a $100K retrofit on most trucks or new trucks. The end result... dramatic cost of living increase is coming on each and every product shipped by truck.

Again... the Democrats did this on false data from a guy with a degree out of a diploma mill that is now shut down.

    But NOT without additional cost.

Fox News [so liberals can consider the source] says that 4 times more regulations have already been passed under obama than in Bush's 8 years.
EACH regulation has a cost of administration that is ongoing, and EACH regulation has an ongoing cost of implementation. These are both TAXES operating under a cover name. And many regulations also have a fee that must be paid to the government. That is a straight up TAX.

But finding a way around the regs also carries a cost. In the trucks for instance, the repair and restoration of old trucks is expensive too.

All of that gets added into everything we, as individual consumers, buy.

I don't think that at all...they had a gun to their head, they tried to make the best of it. Like everything else regulated to death by our government....eventually it fails.

Kind of like the helmet law, baby seat requirement, or Bluetooth mandate: legislating that folks buy products they wouldn't otherwise purchase.

Seems like this is the popular new way to tax folks without the usual burden of getting a "tax law" through congress, managing the process, or finding a way to funnel tax dollars back to the special interest group that supported you. Instead: just pass a law that they have to buy your special interest groups product.

Does anyone think that these extra costs to truckers will be passed on to the consumer when they buy the goods and services these trucks deliver??? So now on top of just plain old inflation, we'll have these costs.
