Until such time as evidence to the contrary is produced, there is nothing to be understood.

You're still missing the point. Regardless of how bad humans might have been, downing (almost) all the people and (almost) all the animals would be something of an over-reaction to put it lightly. It's like finding a family of serial killers so filling their house with water to down them, their children and all their pets.

I don't see how this story can be seen to present a positive image of God. In fact it pretty much admits that itself - if it wasn't a bad thing to do, why would God need to promise never to do it again?

    Not at all, trust me.

This assessment is, of course, purely arbitrary, and is utterly without any foundation of understanding of the attendant circumstances.

Which isn't a problem if it is known that all of them need to die.

    They don't matter.

What makes you think he needed to?

I am quite glad I don't understand why it would be necessary to execute pretty much every living thing on the planet.

True. Maybe he just chose to. Maybe he lied. None of this is making God come out any better from this story.

And I'm glad you've admitted you are unable or unwilling to consider the question unencumbered by your prejudices.

Depends who you are. Some people consider Sandra Fluke a saint and Sarah Palin a slut, but that view says nothing complementary about them; and neither, perhaps, are those who presume to judge God to be particularly esteemed.

Are we unable to judge God, according to you?

God sent angels down, they banged mortal women making the evil supermen that brought this evil god then obliterated by Mass Murder so where is the morality if God let it happen?

Sodom and Gomorrah god lied there were innocent men - SLAVES a normal practice culturally in ancient times. He obviously is immoral by lying and Mass Murder of innocent slaves.

No more than you are. You've also made no attempt to explain why you believe executing almost the entire population of the world could be a good thing, which I find a little disturbing.

I'm not judging God. I don't believe God exists. I'm judging the people to present this story as one supporting the worship of the God it purports to depict.

Show me a goddie who doesnt claim he understands the bible. All of them understand it different ways of course; that is a lot of why the book is popular, it says whatever you want it to say.

...Maybe you have no idea what is in your Bible. He is talking about the Nephilim in the his first sentence. That certainly is in the Bible.

Why would I, when you're obviously aware of the biblical text which provides the answer?

    Yes you are.

What one believes often contradicts what one knows.

I have yet to see anyone do that.

Because this is a discussion forum, not a Biblical cross-reference forum. Don't worry if you're not interested in having a discussion though, I'll just go and find someone who is.

The Bible may provide an answer, but it sure as hell isn't a satisfactory answer for anything rational and questioning person. God, at times, claims that he does things for some greater good... or for the lesser good. He plagues the Egyptian people as a whole, culminating in the death of every first born child, until the Pharoah decides to let the Hebrews go on their way. He tells the Hebrews to go into an already occupied land and basically murder everybody, except for the women and children which he allows to be taken as wives and slaves. And instead of intervening at any point to set man on the right path, he simply decides to end it all with omnicide.

This either seems like a devlish deity or a severely incompetent one. Now, taken as a psuedo-historical tale told by the Jews to describe how they came about and how their surroundings came about, it makes perfect sense. For an actual historical tale, it seems like Hitler magically traveled to the past, decided he actually liked the Jews, and then went on a rampage with them and his magical powers.

I'm afraid that doesn't explain why I should bother giving you information we both know you have already.

Yes, I'm sure you can find many like yourself who are interested in having "disucssions" about how arguments made by no one but yourselves are ridiculous.

The Bible isn't about Jews. It's about Christ.

I was talking specifically about the Old Testament. And Jesus and the people he interacted with were Jews, so yes, basically even the New Testament is about Jews.

They dont like to accept that, it would call into question just how it is that it makes sense to adopt some middle eastern tribes sky god cult and history as if it were their own.

you said that out loud, you know.

YL, doesn't matter how much you and all those other non-middle eastern abrahamics would that it weren't, it won't change the fact that your bible is 100% jewish. by jews, about jews, for jews. JEWISH. darkish skinned, brown eyed, swarthy, yiddish, semitic, hebrew.

    honestly, you're becoming absurd.

    - - - Updated - - -

indeed. another very good reason for playing pretendies.
