Not really. The most popular autos in the US are not the fuel efficient, but big, lumbering, gas guzzling SUV's. Japan took over the market on price and features, not fuel efficiency.

I recall Datsuns & VW's that kicked Detroit's ass. I also remember the last gas crunch [Bush] & all the SUV's on the car lots with "W" stickers on them that they couldn't give away.

However I do agree that as long as the GOP continues to kneel before the open zippers of the richest few % of americans, the money they earn will enable them to continue to wrap policies that clearly benefit first, wealth preservation and then expansion (as opposed to creation) in populist rhetoric. the current wealth gap is as great as it was in the golden age of the robber barons.
