“Rep. Mondaire Jones said Thursday Democrats will abolish the Senate filibuster and pack the Supreme Court in order to pass more restrictions on guns, as the House prepares to advance a package of gun bills next week.

Jones, D-N.Y., made the comments at a House Judiciary Committee markup on a package called the "Protecting Our Kids Act." The emergency committee meeting was called by Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., in response to the mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York, in recent weeks.

"Enough of you telling us that school shootings are a fact of life when every other country like ours has virtually ended it. Enough of you blaming mental illness and then defunding mental health care in this country. Enough of your thoughts and prayers," Jones said during the emotional hearing.

"You will not stop us from advancing the Protecting Our Kids Act today," he added. "If the filibuster obstructs us, we will abolish it. If the Supreme Court objects, we will expand it. And we will not rest until we have taken weapons of war out of circulation and our communities each and every day."

And there you have it. They’re going to usurp the constitution, end the filibuster, pack the court and force their political ideology on the country.

    Thoughts?

0% of it happening as Manchin will never agree to it- so not worth worrying about. Too many extremists in both parties

Will be moot in 7 months

Just goes to prove what their end goal is and how they view the Supreme Court. No biggies right? Doesn't matter that there are more effective and better means that are possible. Doesn't matter what the Constitution actually says on the subject.

While this may be true. Their true colors have been revealed when it comes to gun control and the Supreme Court.

There are extremists in both parties - if Schumer starts pushing for it that will prove you right

    Makes sense

Remember that 85% of Americans want sensible gun control

THAT is a lot of votes

Neither will the soon-to-be-former Senator/Democrat in Arizona...

Mondaire is in no place to make those guesses, but his heart is in the right place...

The current supreme court is an illegitimate joke anyway. It's not like they can hurt it.

The constitution says "well regulated Militia", where's that at?

Are you able to describe a "sensible" gun law?

Republicans didn't expand the court. That's what Jones said he wants to do. It's a different thing than just nominating and confirming justices to fill vacant (but pre-existing) seats.

Contrast that with what your side wants to do:

"If the Supreme Court objects, we will expand it."

Are those calling for massive gun control, do they really care about the killings or just their political agenda of banning guns? I think it’s the later. Has any of the gun control nuts researched mass school shootings? Since we’re talking mass school shootings, how about the definition of 3 or more deaths. 1 wouldn’t be a mass and 2 would be a couple. Somehow, I don’t think 1 or 2 qualify as a mass shooting. Since we’re talking schools, I’m including college. College to me is a school. For the record, the first mass school shooting, 3 or more deaths took place in Austin Texas in 1968, known as the UT Tower shooting where there were 18 dead and 31 injured. Keep in mind I’m using the number 3 or more to indicate a mass. Since the first mass school shooting in 1968, there were 2 in the 1970’s, 2 in the 1980’s, 10 in the 1990’s, 7 in the 2000’s, 13 in the 2010’s and 2 so far counting Texas for the 2020’s. Which simply means mass school shootings is a recent phenomenon.

Isn’t it interesting that no mass school shooting occurred prior to 1968? Although there was that school bombing in Bath, Michigan which killed 45. I suppose that could be called a mass bombing. Anyway, mass school shootings are a recent development as is all mass shootings. FYI, 28 mass shootings between 1900-1970 with 17 of them occurring during the Al Capone gangster era. I imagine we’re approaching 200 mass shootings since 1970 which also makes mass shooting a fairly recent development in at least scale and quantity.

Also interesting is that there were very few gun control laws pre-1968 with the except that one had to have a federal permit to own or buy a machine gun. I think if one looks at those numbers of how many and when, that should tell everyone something. If it doesn’t, then perhaps we’re all blind. It’s like we were living in two different countries with two different types of societies. The pre-1970 country and society, then the post 1970 country and society. Since mass school shootings didn’t exist until 1968 and mass shooting in total has multiplied 7 times the amount of mass shooting pre-1970’s, perhaps we’re looking in the wrong area for cure. Perhaps we need to take a long hard look at what happened to our society, pre 1968 when the first mass school shooting took place and post 1968 when they’ve become common place. That’s where the cure lies. Then again, maybe we don’t want to know what went wrong with our society post 1968. That might make all of us responsible for what is happening as all of us, every one of us embraced the change.

Yes, I firmly believe those who just spout gun control don’t care about the reasons or the cause or even finding a cure that might stop all this killing. Just their political agenda. If they want to find the cause, they’d be delving deep into our society to find out what has changed between the two eras, the era of no mass school shootings with mass shootings in general being very rare and today era, post 1968 when mass school shooting and mass shootings in general have become the norm.

One thing is for certain, even if all guns were eliminated, the cause would still be there within our society. These mass shootings would move on to mass killing by other means, bombs, arson, chemicals, etc. The cause of mass killings won’t go away with gun control. How stupid can people be. Gun control may limit the deaths per incident, but it won’t stop the mass killings. They go on and they’ll increase. Only by other means.

The problem, no one is looking for the cause, no one is looking for the cure. Fact is no one wants to find out what the cause is that will lead to a cure. They wouldn’t like it one bit. So, let’s blame guns, then we can blame bombs, then we can blame fire and chemicals, we’ll continue to blame everything while no being one interested in find the root cause and a cure. That much too hard.

While I’ve been a libertarian for over 20 years and both sides have little appeal to me I’ll make voting against any loon with an anti 2A stance my bottom line.

Democrats don't have the numbers to end the filibuster so it will take Biden's help but he never will because the Democrats know they will need to use it again and Biden won't want to be blamed for ending it.

Well, republicans cheated, just in a different way than that. Saying oh there's an election in 8 months (Garland), can't even consider your nominee because an election is coming up... oh we have an election in <2 months, better get our nominee through (Barrett).

There's nothing in the constitution requiring a scotus size of 9 or filibuster. Like republicans, democrats would just have to choose justices who promise to ignore precedent and do what they want. Though it's true, sometimes their opinions surprise people. I've been surprised by how moderate Roberts has been, and it seems to have been fueled by his respect for precedent and stability.

It's not as powerful as it sounds. The issue has to be so important to them that they're willing to not vote for their own party or, even less likely, vote for the demonized other side. Things like gun control are controlled by special interests who fund campaigns.

You have two issues at play here - guns and abortion with the lesser impact of the Jan 6 committe findings. If I were the Democrats I would be looking for counter culture with “March for our lives! Everytown” “ Moms against guns”. There are a growing number of grassroots organisations out there
