I was browsing posts and noticed that the donations for the month, which is almost at end were only $40 out of goal of $360. $360 a month is about 4 grand a year, I doubt the admin is raking in a bunch of money on this site. There are hundreds of us who log in daily and enjoy the exchange of ideas, debate, and the ever popular political ranting. While some of us may be in financial straights, I suspect many of us are doing OK and making a $5 or $10 contribution isn't going to break the bank. Wouldn't you pay $10 or $20 a month to participate in this forum? I've visited several and this is a pretty good one. Why not chip in a few bucks to maintain a good thing?

I have no affiliation with the owner and don't even know who he is. It just seems like sending them a few bucks for something we enjoy using is the right thing to do.

On the other hand, this site couldn't sell ads if there were no posters providing their content. If I make a financial investment in a company, then I expect to receive dividends. If I'm making a donation, then I want to know how my donations will be used to create a better world. Do you know what happens to donations that are made to Political Forum? Do they support a worthwhile charity?

    uh...wat?

Donations go to infrastructure to pay for the site that lets you post here for free. Not sure what charity your speaking of.

Sell ads? What ads? I've never seen an advertisement on here. I think it would be a good thing for Political Forum to accept some advertising. It's a popular and dignified forum and would get lots of sponsors. Yes? No?

So, why doesn't it accept advertising?

    Done.

I watch every dollar these days but I try to chip in when I can. I have also noticed donations have been getting light.

Who said you are making a financial investment or charitable contribution? You're contributing for a service. If you go the dentist and pay him $100 to fill a cavity, do you expect to get dividends?

That is a false analogy. Paying for a service is not equivalent to making a donation to a business owner. Websites make their money from selling advertisements. Website advertisements are sold based upon how much traffic the website garners. How many people would view this website if there were no posts made here? We posters provide the content for this website. Without our participation, no ads would be sold. If anyone is going to receive payment here, it should be the content providers.

Do you donate money to your employer for the privilege of having a job?

Actually, Websites make money however possible. Ads are just the easiest way. But for lots of people, Ads are annoying turn offs. I would much rather donate a few bucks here and there to keep it free from paywalls and ad-clutter.

You want a dividend? Your dividend is that this page is still here when you wish to join us to make your opinions known. If your looking for something more, then I'm sure there are many other message boards just itching to pay you for your thoughts.

I look at more like supporting PBS, they provide me with entertainment and knowledge and I try to give back a little in return so they and I can both continue to enjoy the product provided.

A few of my comrades donated to the site and got perma-banned for pointing out mods who were breaking their own site rules. Until I'm confident that that is no longer happening, I won't give a single penny to the site. If that results in mods cracking down harder on me than they otherwise would, so be it.

There is an ad on this page right now. Do you get ad-free access by making a donation?

Paywall? Sites that provide professionally generated content might feature a paywall. Is there content here at Political Forum of which I am unaware?

No, I don't expect a dividend, since I am not an investor. You're right. There are thousands of public fora available on the Internet. This is hardly the first or only forum site on which I have chosen to participate.

That is a benefit that new users should be made more aware of. I didn't know that you could get ad free access to the site by making a donation.

We buried that deep in the recesses, since its not coming up that often.

    http://www.politicalforum.com/faq.php

Thanks for bringing it up though. Other members may not be aware of it as well. Where would it have been most visible to you when you first signed on, if you don't mind my asking?

    Thanks

It seems that not all members are aware of this, and this is as good a time to point this out as any.

    http://www.politicalforum.com/faq.php

Also, lets make this abundantly clear. All members are responsible for their own actions. Members are NOT punished for not donating. Members who donate will have to comply with the rules just as anyone else. No favors are granted, not even for sending pizza and beer on a Saturday night. Any member in compliance with the forum rules will never have any issues with staff members.

Donations are appreciated to run this site only, and not for profits otherwise rumored.

And with that, I thank the member who was kind enough to bring up this topic.

    Sincerely
    Shangrila
