Thinking about the endless whining about the death of singer Whitney Houston. Now, I can understand when a CURRENT celebrity dies who has been performing recently, is a major star or current chart topper. That at least has some relevance. But a singer who is basically a has been? One whose best days were more than a decade ago? Why all the angst? As someone once said "You used to not get this kind of media attention unless the Soviets were launching missiles".
Well, Houston may not have been important or popular with you... but she was in the eyes of other human beings. Don't worry, the hype will die down and those who really loved her will go out a remember her by buying her music.
I hate it when a celebrity dies because they are treated like they are above human and werent supposed to die or something. Last Tuesday a SFC in the US Army was killed in Afghanistan fighting you know...a war on America's behalf. I saw it on the little scroll thing they have on the bottom of the news channel. That was about the only time I heard about it.
Of course, the job of a soldier is important (I am one); and death has touched me personally. Even so, while I wouldn't compare the death of Ms. Houston to the death of a fellow soldier... I can say that she has a unique place in my life as an "artist". By virtue of her skill and body of work expressed over time... Whitney Houston touched the lives of millions (most typically in positive ways). I certainly understand people not "feeling" what I feel for her (they may never have liked her music or been interested in her as a human being)... but the reality is, she touched MILLIONS of people with her profession.
I understand why she gets more attention because she is a hell of a lot more popular and mainstream. I was kind of shocked as well when I heard the news. But many people just tend to overreact when celebrities die for some reason. Its always the "why them? she was so young?" They are humans too and humans die. I can't be a hypocrite though, when Jackson died years ago my entire neighborhood heard me screaming Noooo!! lol...
Dude - are you a real zombie??? Sorry Johnny. Here I am screwing up another otherwise decent discussion with inane bs. But hey - I'm sick - and bored. Oh - and thanks for your service! I really do appreciate it. .
Ha-Ha!! I scrolled back up and the image surprised me. Time for me to hit the sack! Have a good night/day all.
Whitney Houston had one of the greatest voices the world has ever heard. Of course there was going to be media attention when she died. She did a lot of great things, but her music touched hearts around the world. Whether you were a fan of hers or not, the music world, and the rest of the world, has suffered a great loss.
Celebrities, VIPs, Congressmen, Media personalities, are surrounded by magic mirrors. They have no idea, nor do they care what ordinary working class people, the proletariats, think. Their world is an illusion, and they are dillusional. The media is their magnifying glass, and the media is controlled by corporate oligarchy. It is comforting, however, to hear about the death of another pompous swine, and especially those who die a tortured death after having been so full of themselves and belittling hardworking common citizens. Looking forward to hearing of Rush Limbaugh getting cancer of the mouth, and having to have his jaw surgically removed, shortly before his death by brain tumor in the half of his brain which functions.
I'm human and I understand how you may feel... but I would not recommend remaining in such a cynical state. It's likely to affect you.
I also hate it when a celebrity dies. We who grew up in the sixties saw plenty enough of celebrities die. Jimi Janis Jim Brian Jones but to name but four jimi, the best left handed guitarist Janis, one of the best blues singers Jim Morrison, poster boy for free speech Brian Jones, one heckofa musician/songwriter the stones were never the same after he left the band
Why is she being hailed in a positive light is my question. She was strung out on drugs and alcohal! She should be dragged across the screens as a common junkie! But sense she could sing and everyone loves her albums she gets the exemption.
People like drama. she was a hottie at one point, and I like her song "try to make it on my own"... god bless her and that's it. my fiance was crying too, I told her to shut the fk up.
There is nothing wrong with showing a modicum of empathy and/or compassion. To deny that isn't a good thing.
Obama hates it too - he all broke up about it an' mopin' `round the White House cryin' like a John Boehner... President Barack Obama Reacts to Whitney Houston's Death 13 Feb.`12 - Whitney Houston left a musical legacy that is pretty impossible to ignore—and the president of the United States is no exception. It is to distract from the real news!! Despite what you and your friends like to believe, there is no such thing as the liberal media. It is invention of people like Rush Limbaugh. There may have been at one time, but now all we have is the corporate media. The corporate media does not promote an ideological political agenda, they promote a practical one. They promote an agenda favorable to the corporations that own them, and to the corporations that pay their bills. It is in the best interests of those groups to keep people distracted from the real problems this country faces, and to consume them with dead celebrities, politician scandals, the latest speaking gaff, missing young white females, etc!! It is also probably true that the average American likes that sort of nonsense better as well, so it is good for profit margins. So that is what their bias is towards, it is towards sensationalism and soft news!! That is why they cover the death of a washed up singer more than they cover major international news!! PS. I wonder if you if you remember when Michael Jackson died, there was an election in Iran happening. It was big news, then Michael Jackson died, and it was relegated to the back burner. It is a sad state of affairs, and goes a long way towards explaining our falling democracy. I forget who said it, but it is basically true. The person said that basically a democracy is only as strong as it's press. Our press is terrible, and our democracy reflects it!!
There are millions of gorgeous women, and millions who sing great. just because someone got on television and became a celebrity doesn't earn a lot of respect with me. there are bands who have TONS of great songs, those bands I admire. for example Pink Floyd, The Who, Genesis and many more.
