Mak , as I understand the OP , it's rape of a baby or a child by a male pervert , of any age . I don't know that the age of the rapist makes a lot of differance to the baby or child being raped , so that's why I am so vehement about the punishment. If it was two teenagers having a romp in the back-seat of their Daddy's car at a drive-in movie , that's be somewhat different , as long as they were both enjoying themselves and not under the influence of Extasy or any other date rape drug. .

I wouldn't ruin his life. Misdemeanors are nothing. I wouldn't have him register as a sex offender for life either.

Interpret it however the hell you want. I can't control what people may or may not do in the future. All I can do is provide incentives. If I was a child rapist I would much rather let the child live and accept my fate than murder him/her and be tortured for years.
But if the penalty is death either way, what would you have to lose by disposing of the child in order to cover up your crime? No child, means no crime can be reported. The child is not around to tell anyone what happened, and this makes it more difficult to track down the rapist. Life in prison is a better option because we need to encourage these bastards to keep their victim alive.
