:angered: Republicans are making me sad for the state of humanity. I think I need some sort of mental reboot before I give up on American politics entirely. And go live in a tree.

And it's not that democrats aren't ridiculous. They are. But they're a different breed of ridiculous. More of a Katie Perry sort of ridiculous, whereas the republicans are more like Showgirls ridiculous. Showgirls is a movie that has made people give up on movies entirely. Republicans, I suspect, are entirely deliberate in their attempt to make people give up entirely on the possibility of decent leadership.

I need some tips on how to get over my growing hostility toward republicans. I don't like feeling hostile and I suspect that it's a trick of some sort. :eyepopping:

"whereas the republicans are more like Showgirls ridiculous"

I'd agree with your assessment...except the GOP doesn't even provide us with lots of Elizabeth Berkeley nudity and "hot girl-on-girl action". Now...if we could get them to have SE Cupp recreate "Noni" and Sarah Palin as the Gina Gershon role....that would atleast be a little something to their credit. :)

I'd recommend trying to understand Republicans better instead of just judging them through a liberal filter.

And I'd also recommend not using Republican politicians as a barometer for all Republicans. Since a lot of our politicians are admittedly stupid.

I may be feeling hostility toward republicans for a similar reason. I dislike them more than democrats for the reason because democrats seem to be straight forwar hypocrites, while republicans seem to be a crooked kind who hide behind Jesus, the Bible and things of that sort.

Just wait. They seem hellbent on pandering to your sensitivities by shriveling up and melting.

this is why we need term limits..most of the politicians are failed lawyers and they end up running for some office..2 terms and no retirement no life long healthcare either..

More turn-over has its attractions, but restricting Americans' choice is a dubious way to go about it.

If incumbents were deprived of the advantages they accord themselves, there would be a far greater likelihood of the electorate imposing the term limits that are always, properly, their option.

The same is true for political parties. The duopoly has rigged the game to hamstring potential rivals.

I try. Seriously, I really do try. But right now they're trying to convince me that we should have MORE GUNS IN SCHOOLS. Is it really my 'liberal filter' that makes that sound insane?

I don't, really. I judge republicans by what republicans say. And it's not like you can judge the party by what every lone whacko claiming to be a republican says, I know that, but so many of them say the same thing, over and over again, how can I not judge the party by what appears to be a general consensus among the party?

I dislike the standard Republican. But the standard Democrat is just as bad. Any Democrat who voted for Barack Obama, a globalist scumbag who murders innocent children is lower than trash.

So spread the hostility to your mates, don't just single out Republicans.

Okay, I am not a Republican, but I am conservative on a majority of issues. I hope I will do. I will tender you an offer, come to Oregon City, we will have a handcrafted microbrew at a cozy pub on the Willamette River and watch the Californian sea lions tear up the salmon. After several brews, you can make the sea lions into any metaphor you care to. I would be willing to bet that we share a whole lot more in common that we disagree about. If nothing else, you can see salmon carnage while being three sheets to the wind which is just as good as the UFC. How can you lose?

You know people, it's really hard being a swedish republican. As in GOP that is. I probably spend too much time on this forum and listening to american politics and stuff. Thing is, there's really no equivalent to the GOP in sweden. Hell, even your democrats would be rightists by our swedish standards. Not even our own nationalist party supports things like the death penatly or gun rights. I'm a sad swede.. :(

I think there's a lot of that going around on both sides. Imo, the basic problem is that there really isn't a unifying principle that provides any common ground as there once was.

Imo folks on the left decided they could no longer tolerate the pace of social/political/economic change in the country. In the past an impasse over such massive change was accompanied by events which shattered the opposite side...things like the Civil War or the Great Depression. That hasn't happened in this case. There hasn't been a huge protracted dislocation or calamity that would change world views.

Then go learn about Republicans. Attend a meeting. Have a civil conversation. Ask them why they think that way.

Let's approach this one issue at a time.
Case in point...political reaction to the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting.
Democrats call for immediate gun control initiatives, while Republicans draw upon the 2nd Amendment and it's protection of the citizenry's right to keep and bear arms.

The city of Chicago has some of the most stringent gun laws in the country, yet reached the rather auspicIous milestone of 500 murders in 2012...a city mind you...that is also heavily Democratic in both leadership and voters. Where's the outcry for the lives of these inner-city folks the Libs are so fond of accusing the Cons of not caring about?

While Republicans are far fom actual conservatives at times, in terms of controlling government spending and growth; I find the hypocrisy of the Left, amusing.

Now I don't really care, but perhaps comments such as yours, is what makes people think that cons aren't really the empathic type.

If it makes you feel better, many conservative voters have been very unhappy with the Republican Party leadership.
There are different types of Republicans also, some are economically moderate but far-right conservative on certain social issues. Others are essentially Liberals when it comes to every social issue, but they just want lower taxes. As Americans saw with Ron Paul, some of them are anti-war. The sum of the whole is not really a good representation of its constituent parts.

What issues in particular really frustrate you?
