this is where we've arrived. An NBA player announces that he prefers sex with men vs women and it requires mention from the White House. Where was the WH when Wilt Chamberlain talked about his sexual conquests?

He's a professional athlete but for some reason, because he engages in gay sex, it gets made into a huge deal.

I don't care who or what he bangs. It's too much information and irrelevant.

    excerpt

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House is commending NBA veteran Jason Collins for becoming the first active male player in the four major American professional sports to come out as gay.

White House spokesman Jay Carney called that decision courageous and says the White House supports Collins. He says he hopes the 34-year-old center's NBA colleagues will also offer support.

''We view that as another example of the progress that has been made and the evolution that has been taking place in this country,'' Carney said.

    EXACTLY

why is it that we elevate gay sex into something huge? So he gives as well as receives, so what? Why haven't we heard about what Lebron does in his bedroom?

I haven't heard a thing about what Collins does in his bedroom. Please elaborate where I can find this.

Why is it that conservatives only think of sex when it comes to relationships. Is that all their marriages and romantic relationships are, sex?

If I'm not banging the girl I'm dating, are we still heterosexual?

We saw the same reaction to Jackie Robinson, the bigots were on parade then too.

ITT: Butt-hurt (*)(*)(*)(*)-cons miss the point. Homosexuality is highly stigmatized - especially in professional sports. He's not doing this to win a popularity contest or get extra attention - though that may have been the result. He's doing this to encourage other homosexuals who are afraid to come out of the closet because we live in a nation of bigoted (*)(*)(*)(*)-cons.

    Indeed.

Obviously within this country homosexuality is one of the last things that we not only discriminate against, but actually create laws regarding, such as the Defense of Marriage Act.

I find it amazing that so many people, within this very thread, will say they do not care and then go on to denigrate homosexuality by reducing it to a sexual act.

Don't really see why the White House saw this as comment worthy when their are more important things to focus on.

Can you point out to me any written law that requires the White House to make mention of any NBA Player announcing that he prefers sex with men as opposed to having sex with women? I think this is something that was voluntarily done by the White House.

What the HELL??! The WH/OBAMA has to publicly offer his congrats and support to an NBA player b/c he prefers sex w/men over women??!! And this is coming from a MARRIED GUY?!

This is just..... gawd! What we're getting from the WH is just....SICK! crap! I'm going to go out and find that ditzy neighbor of mine who dearly loves Obama, but really dislikes gays and tell her this.... and watch her eyes glaze over again......

"We view that as another example of the progress we've made...." Every word that comes out of Carney's mouth has to have Obama's approval, of course, and he's telling us that Obama is just tickled pink over the 'evolution that has been taking place here .... turning our country as queer as possible!

This would have been well-deserved. I remember John Witherspoon once doing the math on this, and he said apparently Wilt would have had to be (*)(*)(*)(*)ing while he was playing ball at the same time to reach those numbers. That's quite an accomplishment.

    ahh

    so it's not about sex?

    Is it a new species/race/gender?

why does the fact that he prefers to give and receive penis make it any more newsworthy than what Lebron does in the bedroom?

Since when does having gay sex require mention from the White House? Is there something spiritual or important to the state vs heterosexual sex?

I would venture to say that it is a notable moment due to the level of significance of it, of a current player of one of the three big team sports coming out as gay, as a member of a class historically denigrated, as this thread is evidence of, as a member of a class routinely discriminated against.

I remember in High School on the Football team we had this Junior who moved from Texas to Florida. He wanted to play Quarterback and he had a damn good arm. Only problem was when we found out he was gay the Offensive line stopped blocking for him during practice, Recievers stopped catching their passes from him, and was vilified for the most part. When he gave up and quit because he was tired dealing with the constant insults, and the bigotry our coach was so upset with us we ran miles and miles and miles until some of us could not stand up. I was a freshman at the time, and I got a personal view on what it was like to be vilified and hated for being different.

What Collins did was pretty brave, though I feel it would have been more of an impact if it were someone who were a bigger name. Regardless, hats off to him for breaking new ground and being the first active athlete in a major sport to be open with who he is. Hate to be cliched here, but anyone going "Big deal" or dismissing this is newsworthy are on the wrong side of history on this one.

Well, personally I think one could make an argument that it was a bit chicken (*)(*)(*)(*) of him to do at the end of his career, having in some ways subjugated himself and went along with the presumed locker room homophobia rather than standing up for what is right.

It is easy to take the moral high ground after he got rich off the system.

The poor, insulted champion of "free" sex life accouterments got a consoling personal call from the Big Cheese....

an odd dichotomy, that..... one's sex life is no one's business....
while on at least two occasions, bringing national, presidential attention to one's sex life.

Progressives are frauds. from the top down.....as we all know what they're doing...
bring attention to this "brave" NBA player.....just as they did with Sandra Fluke....so they can paint any critics....specifically, the "angry right-wing".... as waging another of their "mean" and "oppressive" "Wars on __________"

    I disagree.

I think that there exists in this country widespread hatred and bigotry towards homosexuals, something that I find to not only be an intellectual failure but a moral failure, where folks are so frightened of gays that they make rules and laws targeting them, ensuring the status quo.

It actually IS a big deal. When human beings in our society have to pretend to be something they're not because we have improperly judged what they are to be a bad thing, is a bad thing. But this incident shows that our society is maturing into one that they no longer have to pretend.
