What? Europe has historically had an opiate problem since the 19th century. What do you think the Opium Wars were about?

That vast majority of Americans use marijuana and/or Cocaine, both of which while drugs yes, do not have the crippling physical addiction that Heroin produces although that is changing now that the cartels have seen how the Russians and Eastern Euros are cleaning house in Europe with the most captive customers possible with a poison that makes you want it so bad you get sick without it while it kills you slowly.

It is the Russian and Eastern European immigrants who provide the heroin you are correct about that, but Europe's drug of choice has always been the poppy poison.

She was over the Moon .
I sent her a telegram saying , " Mum , Viv thinks I am as great as Winston Churchill . They need a decent leader instead of that fishy geezer. Now is my moment "
She replied , " Come to Tea on Sunday , son ".

Has there been an operation I missed?
The joint Columbian --Mexico Cartel arrangements . The one the CIA use for their percentage .

I almost hate myself for reading this thread... :D

You're quoting Trainspotting as an example of normal UK life and now it's ancient history that reflects it? Honestly. Look, these are as close to reality here, as Reservoir Dogs is to US life. Assuming you're not a mad mental druggie gangster, which of course you may be for all I know. Raymo will put you right on the rest, I suppose.

    Oh nononono not that Churchill

China had a lot of things we wanted, silk, tea, spices, but we didn't have anything they wanted. As a result wealthy merchants, the forerunner of today's corporations, had to pay China for the goods in gold. They soon realised that if more gold was going into China than was coming out eventually China would have all the gold. So the merchants deliberately got the population of China addicted to opium so they would have something to trade with. The government of China didn't like these tactics and it resulted in the opium wars.

What did you think the opium wars were about?

Of course it is, Scotland has no more heroin addicts than anywhere else.

They do have more than their fair of alcoholics mind.

Talking about boozing....I was in England last year, April and May, last time was autumn 1982, I was very surprised by the amount of boozing everywhere. I was starting to think Australia is abstemious in comparison! Didn't get to Scotland though, can't make a comparison there.

Well according to this the whole of the UK like pretty much the whole of Europe is drinking too much and you are right, more than Australia

    http://www-958.ibm.com/software/data/cognos/manyeyes/visualizations/alcohol-consumption-worldwide-3

In the UK itself England does seem to be a bit worse than Scotland

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2010/may/26/alcohol-consumption-statistics#data

Scotland has recently introduced minimal pricing for alcohol in an attempt to sort this out and I understand England is going to follow suit...but what the amount which British people drink is doing on a thread about Indecent Wealth and French taxes is beyond me.:wtf:

In Scotland a balanced diet is a half in one hand and a nip in the other.

Fred mate, that's just you. I haven't had a nip or a half since New Year.:p

Interesting post on the opium wars. (No, S&M, haven't had any of that, ever:p:p). It is an early example of the ferocity and ruthlessness of the forerunners of global corp mentality which rules the world with an unethical rod of iron.

Since when has Alcohol not been a subject of key importance ?
Without it we would have frozen to death in between bouts of hammering the Scotty people into permanent submission .

It deserves its own thread, wait a minute...make that a separate forum.

As stated fred, I have to watch out for fred drift.

I think you will find it was the thread's OP that brought Scotland into the discussion in post #47 but Alexa the Net Nanny ignored it for some reason.

I gather she is a Glaswegian bus driver during the day and only hits the Forum after a few pub bevvies . I am sure it was in one of the Jamestown Foundation reports about binge drinking in the low lands .

Coming back to Francois Hollande , as opposed to Viv the Glaswegian Bus Driver , I heard most of an interesting BBC Radio programme earlier this week centered on this guy --- previously almost unknown to me in any detail , and British people in general .
I did not know that he was with Segolene Royal for around 30 years and until then was only generally regarded as sound but boring .
But since , he has been a revelation , striking up a controversial relationship with the journalist Valerie Trierweiler and becoming leader of the Socialist party .
He is now regarded as very intellectually respectable -- written several books and is a brilliant party leader by general consensus.
We heard about the strands of his Socialist Party which were described as the biggest bunch of intellectual posers , wankers and self admirers in the whole world -- let alone France . Yet Hollande has been cunning , charming and decisive . He has glued them into some sort of party , apparently unimaginable even a short time ago .
This guy should not be underestimated .
Sarkozy is a little self seeking rat in my opinion , but he has perhaps met his match .

well I would also argue that point and say that if getting his/her ass off would also apply to women in Africa and all over Europe and if that would apply to majority of 'rich' population, Africa would most probably have native billionaires just like more than 50% of Eastern Europe.

...and that is why I started the thread. This man is the future of France, if the world is lucky. I don't underestimate him or the impact of the French on international politics. While Sarkozy is pandering to racism and mucking up the EU with delusions of grandeur and world domination, the rest of the world is affected by his approach.

Update on Mr Hollande's progress. The bling brigade will be quaking in their gold chains... What is going on in France, 1 in 5 ballots to the far right National front?

The 75% is the stupidest idea... All the rich people will leave the country and go to Switzerland, that's all...

I hope Sarkozy will be président back.

I appreciate your point, but if the rich leave every country which asks them to pay tax, they will be leaving one country after another, because I know UK is trying to nail them down on the same issue and sure other countries will be doing the same due to the economic crisis.

Perhaps global corp abuse days are over. Perhaps they will not be holding countries to ransom as they have in the past.
