What If Fox News Viewers Watched CNN Instead?

The link may be behind a paywall for some, so I'll post some excerpts.

A pretty big difference, as it turns out, according to a new study by political scientists David Broockman of Stanford and Joshua Kalla of Yale. The research offers a much more granular look at the impact of Fox on its viewers, thanks to reliance on a resource-intensive experiment, rather than the broad aggregates of that earlier paper.

Broockman and Kalla recruited a sample of regular Fox News viewers and paid a subset of them to watch CNN instead. (Compliance was enforced with some news quizzes, for which additional compensation was offered.) Then the treatment group of switchers and the control group of non-switchers took three waves of surveys about the news.

The results: Not only did CNN and Fox cover different things during the September 2020 survey period, but the audience of committed Fox viewers, which started the month with conservative predispositions, changed their minds on many issues.

    ...

Switchers were five percentage points more likely to believe that people suffer from long Covid, for example, and six points more likely to believe that many foreign countries did a better job than the U.S. of controlling the virus. They were seven points more likely to support voting by mail. And they were 10 points less likely to believe that supporters of then-candidate Joe Biden were happy when police officers get shot, 11 points less likely to say it’s more important for the president to focus on containing violent protesters than on the coronavirus, and 13 points less likely to agree that if Biden were elected, “we’ll see many more police get shot by Black Lives Matter activists.”
    ...

Over a longer span of time, presumably, more stories ignored by Fox News would have piled up. And indeed one of the things that switchers changed their minds about was Fox News itself: They became more skeptical that Fox would cover a story that reflected poorly on Trump, even if it were true.

    Sooooooo, interesting, don'tcha think?

Not really. 5-13% swing isn’t much of a swing, and the complete lack of the same study doing the inverse aka CNN viewers switching to FOX makes it virtually impossible to draw any real conclusions.

The power of 1% is clear to anyone. This basically just confirms what we knew. Conservatives are living in a world that traps them there. I don’t think they can get out.

So 5٪ change their minds when exposed to constant propaganda. Impressive.

Take a group of people and have them watch Sputniknews for a month and I bet some will start to proudly wear the Z symbol.

Fox News has the highest rated viewership for 81 weeks in a row, more than the viewership of CNN, MSNBC, and ABC combined....

As per cable news ratings services, Forbes, Variety, Adweek, Yahoo News, and many other sources. I'm sure you know how to use Google. There's a reason why you won't see CNN, MSNBC, or ABC bragging about their viewership. Because they are all three in the toilet...

And since I'm sure you know how to use Google, just search for CNN Plus launch failure and layoffs....

Fox News Makes Gains In 1Q Cable News Ratings While CNN, MSNBC Suffer Steep Declines (forbes.com)

"Fox News Channel was the only cable news network to make year-over-year ratings gains in the first quarter of 2022, finishing the quarter in first place and marking 81 consecutive quarters as the most-watched network in all of basic cable. FNC’s competitors, CNN and MSNBC, both suffered steep ratings declines compared to the same period one year ago."

This study would suggest that the fact, you just stated, should be seen as something worrisome.

It means that the liberal media does not command the attention of anywhere near the majority of the country, even as they pathetically attempt to cling to life week after week. Liberal media, and liberals in general, do NOT speak for the majority of this nation. There's a reason that Biden has one of, if not the lowest, approval ratings of ANY president in modern history, despite the liberal media's pathetic efforts...

Great idea. So when are you going to start that study?

And people like candy, cake and ice cream, but that doesn't mean a steady diet of those is good for you.

You don't have to take my word or Fox News word for it. Democrats are going to get their collective taints handed to them in the midterm elections. Simple as that.

It turns out that the vast majority of people don't like record high inflation, highest fuel prices in U.S. history, high food prices, or being lied to on a daily basis. Who knew....

Yep, they put the blame on the current POTUS, regardless of the actual cause.

That is patently false. It makes clear the magnitude of influence that one's choice of news program can make, though it has only been quantified in this single, one-- month study of FOX viewers, who switched to CNN. The principle, though, might be anticipated to hold true, for anyone, getting all or most of their news, from a single source.

When I first watched a program on Socialism in America, hosted by Lara Logan (who I recognized from 60 Minutes), on a FOX channel, I was initially left with a disillusioned feeling, that I had been utterly misled by the MSM. But then I looked into some of the things that were mentioned on the program, and found that they had been very much misrepresented.

Unfortunately, one's keeping an open mind, getting news from a variety of perspectives, and taking it all with a grain of salt, are not things that a society can really enforce upon all its members, through government action. These principles should be strongly advocated, by all who want a better- informed electorate, and, I would submit, should be stressed in children's education, as well as through government-sponsored, public- service announcements.

That is a huge difference, in the effect it would have, as on elections, for example. But the amazing thing, is that this was the effect in only one month.

Look at the effect that Qanon has had on our society, though it only holds sway with what I would assume would be a comparable portion of Americans.

If 5% of CNN's viewership switched over to Fox, CNN wouldn't have any viewers left....

don’t claim all this BS when there isn’t even a sample size mentioned nor any mention of whether, if, or how much those people rely on just this one source.

basically, you simply don’t have enough information on which to base your conclusions. Hence my point. But hey, here’s to wishful thinking.

I think we need to reduce the amount of Federal aid we give to colleges if they're going to study twaddle like this.

By the title alone I don't take anything in the study seriously. It's a grievance study and those are notoriously biased.

If it said something negative about MSNBC viewers or CNN viewers you would be saying the same exact thing I am.

This isn't ammunition against the right it's red meat for the base.
