Is the internet good or bad? Is the internet isolating or the reverse? I used to think the internet was liberating, but now I'm not so sure. A few giant firms are gobbling up the internet. They don't have much regard for privacy. Google CEO's Comments Put "Do No Evil" Motto to the Test Facebook's Great Betrayal Just 30 firms dominate the Internet
The internet tends to reveal people as they really are. Which for most people is a bad move. Kinda like everybody going to a nudist colony, and then realizing -- dang, they invented clothes for a reason.

Google has become too powerful. Google is a dangerous monopoly -- more than Microsoft ever was quote: Google is expanding a monopoly over Web search and arguably trying to extend it into several adjacent markets, including display advertising, desktop operating systems, mobile operating systems, mobile Web applications and Web browsers. Microsoft's antitrust problems started with leveraging its Intel-based desktop operating system monopoly into the market for Web browsers. Google using search engine to muscle into Internet businesses, study finds quote: Google has been using its dominant position in online search to muscle its way into other Internet businesses, ultimately limiting consumer choice, Consumer Watchdog said today in a report written for its new Inside Google Website.
Facebook shares your information. Facebook has no regard for privacy. Top Ten Reasons You Should Quit Facebook
It's one of the greatest things in the world to me. Probably the last bastion of an almost totally free market in existence. Thus, the reason so many governments are zealous about controlling it and regulating it. Google's genius. Facebook's genius. Wikipedia is actually more reliable than people think (although never use it as a source in a college paper).
I hear you, but a small number of big companies are taking over. Monopolies are the enemy of the free market. I dunno, I worry about Wikipedia. Lawrence Solomon: Wikipedia’s climate doctor How Wikipedia’s green doctor rewrote 5,428 climate articles Britannica 'still rules' over web rival Encyclopaedia rejects study that puts it on a par with free amateur internet source
The internet is really just a pipe. A pipe can be used to deliver vital materials, used to bash someone on the head or waved around in the air to make lightsaber noises. The pipe itself is neither good or bad.
With friends like these ... Facebook has 59 million users - and 2 million new ones join each week. But you won't catch Tom Hodgkinson volunteering his personal information - not now that he knows the politics of the people behind the social networking site
Yeah but I'm concerned about big companies taking over the internet, controlling the flow of information, invading privacy. One more thing. In the past people used to get together - drink, talk, play cards, walk in the park. Of course they still do these things, but they are now more likely to be found alone stooped in front of a computer screen.
I've found the web to be an excellent learning tool and communication device. But like all things, it depends on what you use it for. It has it's limitations. Over the last few years, corporate dominance is becoming such a major factor that many of us have been slowly going over to the "darknet" or "deep web". I have a couple sites I run that are "deep web" (meaning they are not or cannot be indexed by search engines) There is a lot good information to be gained at some of these sites but you cannot link to them.
Some of these big internet companies can only be described as evil. quote: Criticism of Yahoo! intensified in February 2006 when Reporters Without Borders released Chinese court documents stating that Yahoo! aided Chinese authorities in the case of dissident Li Zhi. In December 2003 Li Zhi was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment for "inciting subversion". LINK I did find this information on the internet, but such criticism is not broadcast by the media. I think left and right can both agree some of these corporations are dangerous.
Craig's List is a sewer. Anyone and everyone who understands this should discourage people from using it. I think a lot of first-time users don't understand and they think it's like any other internet venue they've heard about. The day Craig's List dies is the day the internet gets a little better. Use eBay, Amazon markets, and other legit venues for selling personal goods and things of this nature. No one ever got assaulted, raped or murdered as a result of visiting eBay or Amazon... yet this happens every year for some unwitting Craig's List users.
