Look at Iran's track record. Look at their attitude. They are clearly anti-west and do not like us. "Death to BRITAIN" they chanted in Parliament (and don't try to argue that it can be interpretted otherwise. It was clear what they meant). How lovely!

Do you really wait 5-6 yrs to see what happens? I don't.

All current nuclear powers have all demonstrated one thing - Respect. Iran's regime does not appear to have that.

Because they are my friends, and I stand behind my friends. If somebody goes up and tries to start a fight with my friend for no reason, I want them to know I have their back. If my friend gets sucker-punched, I want them to know that I am going to help them out.

This works for both living in an inner city, as well as for nations.

If I am out at a bar and somebody jumps my friend, I want him to know I have his back. I am not going to just sit back and let some thug beat the crap outta him.

And I do not care if it is a friend, or some stranger I never met before. If I see somebody getting beat up, I am going to step in and try to help him.

That is what being civilized is all about.

 

Even more important, everybody else has shown restraint.

The US and USSR had these things for over 60 years now. And it has been over 60 years since one has been used in combat. Both nations may have postured. Then again, neither of them actually talked about physically destroying each other. It was all clouded in the language of mutual respect and restraint.

The Soviets talked about the Western Powers being dumped onto the "Ash heap of history". The Western powers mostly talked of the Soviets collapsing from within. Neither talked about destroying the other, no matter how bad the language got between them. They talked about the eventual demise of the political systems of the other, not of the people themselves.

Iran on the other hand talks of marching her enemies into the sea and seeing them totally destroyed as a people.

Vast difference.

 

The way I see the situation in Iran is like this. What they did to our embassy was an act of retaliation against us for imposing sanctions against them. Their stated position is that they want to enrich uranium and the UK and US have been in solidarity with the UN saying they can't do that. The sanctions aren't even working, it's at most slowing their progress. There's no evidence of them having nuclear weapons, just records of importing rockets that could possibly be used for the purpose. That's hardly conclusive. Through all of the actions we've taken against them, we have created this hatred and we are making it more likely that our currently very weak preconceptions about Iran become fact. WE are turning them into the monsters we think they are. The solution seems obvious to me. Lift the sanctions and allow them to enrich uranium in return for a thorough IAEA inspection which is not to be impeded under any circumstances. If their stated aims are in accordance with their true aims, they have no reason to refuse but if they do, we listen to what they have to say and act only after careful consideration of said objections. If they agree, and they develop nukes, they've provided us with the evidence for us. Then, and only then, are we justified in fantasising about silly wars between morons.

 

Your embassy and ours both. Simply because of their actions againt embassies, I generally take them off of the list of what I consider "civilized" nations. Not even after WWII did the US sotrm into the Japanese embassy and take over. They closed and sealed the building after all of the staff left, and they were sent back to Japan (via a Soviet ship). The Italian and German embassies were treated the same (but sent hom on a Spanish ship).

Even during the height of WWII, embassies were treated with respect and dignity. Right before the English left Paris in WWII, the ambassador placed the building into the hands of the French caretaker for the duration of the war. Then after Paris fell, Hermann Göring was looking for a new building to host his headquarters.

He discovered a building that looked perfect, but when he knocke don the door the caretaker informed him that it was the British Embassy. Herr Göring then left and did not disturb them again.

This is the action of civilized nations. They do not encourage their people to storm embassies and take the people inside of them hostage. They do not attack embassies because of the actions of their host government (declair them PNG and expelled is different, and not violent).

Just their actions repeatedly against embassies of other nations shows me how uncivilized this nation is, and how irrational they are. This is not a real nation to me, but a bunch of spoiled little children that will do anything they feel like it to get the toy they want.

 

Basing a nation's rationality on if they're civilized seems rather ignorant especially when you base civility on treatment of embassies. America, Britain and Iran have all committed many more condemnable crimes than that and listing them would be trivial as focusing on the treatment of embassies.

Iran is a rational actor they have no need to expend resources or face on nuclear weapons. Nukes currently are only pursued by weak countries that can't defend or sustain themselves. Iran, Israel, and America has shown that it is capable of both. Against illiberal trade embargoes Iran has continued effective if not ideal trade with India and the recent US/Israeli war games only confirms that Iran is capable of a strong enough defense against a realistic threat. Economic strength is the real power now sanctions and overruling democratically elected governments because of financial issues is more possible and effective than an occupation force.

Iran still has limited financial power the sanctions are to limit it's growth and influence specifically in Syria in a time of world wide depression it has little to do with nuclear weapons.
