lmao my favorite is the first part. Perfectly formed little Gerber Baby with angel wings that easily slides out of the woman. Yes, this. Every time. INNOCENT CHILD leaps to mind and suddenly I think of this perfectly formed Gerber Angel Baby.

It fits better within the symbiosis model than being separate or part of the female.

Just to add a woman is not a mother until the birth and/or she has other born children.

It's a part of it's mother until it's not. An apple is a part of a tree until it falls off. Your arm or your head is a part of your body until they are removed. A fetus is no different.

Symbiosis is a biological term. I don't see the inherent biological advantage for the individual organism, aka the female, to host the fetus other than the reproduction and survival of the species. In which case, the fetus would be just as important to a non-hosting male as it is to the hosting female. I don't see how it is accurate to say it is a symbiotic relationship.

There are various types of symbiotic relationships, not all are beneficial to both parties.

I did try to establish just what the fetus/female relationship was in another topic - http://www.politicalforum.com/showthread.php?t=318066&highlight=parasitic

The sapling is a part of the tree until you cut it off and plant it in a different pot.

No, it is its own unique individual complete with its own blood type, organs and DNA. The only thing attaching it to the woman is the umbilical cord/placenta, which is actually part of the fetus, as it contains its DNA and blood.

At conception the entity has no blood.

Fair enough, but it is still very much separate, and unique. it is also not attached to the woman at conception.

It is still part of the mother until it can survive without her body supporting it.

But there again so are the multitude of other organisms in out body without which we would not be able to survive, so I really don't see the point in the fact that it is separate, and unique

I'm not sure what the point is either. There is no question that the zygote is a separate entity. So what ?

    - - - Updated - - -

Disconnect a week old fetus from the mother and tell me what happens next.

While I have 'liked' you comment for the thing it alludes to, in purely biological terms the zef is a separate entity to the female .. however, its very existence is reliant on another person and as such I would describe the zef/female relationship as a symbiotic existence.

Yes, it is part of the woman, until the time it is livable outside the womb.

Simple. . .the woman will survive whether or not the zygote or fetus is remove from her womb.
The zygote or fetus will NOT survive if remove from the woman's body prior to the 20th week of gestation.

Therefore, it is a "by product" of he woman's body until it is viable outside the woman's body.

Dependent on the mother and being an actual part of the mother are different. The fetus is in no shape, or form a part of the mother

Excpet that it has her DNA and totally dependent on her for development, other than that it is totally seperate, unless it is not in the womb then it is just tissue.

so is a patient that is in the hospital hooked up to a ventilator and IV part of the hospital and not an individual tell he or she isn't required to be hooked up to the ventilator and or IV to survive?

A patient whose brain is no longer active (brain dead) is generally removed from the ventilator.
And early term zygote or fetus doesn't have a functioning brain. . .just a growing brain.

And, yes. . .I believe that people should be able to choose when to be removed from life support and heroic measures. In fact, that is what advance directives are for!
