The recognized tribes receive a certain allotment from the government that they distribute throughout their tribes every month. Where I live in Arizona its about 700-1000 per month for each Navaho family, "Recognized", by their tribe.

I propose that the Native Americans have had sufficient time to acculimate into society therefore these payments are no longer needed. I live among them, right next door as a matter of fact, go to school with them and they are as much American as I am. No reason they need special payments anymore.

Tribes with Casino's should no longer be exempt from Corporate and Income tax. The Casino's rake in tens of millions using roads we pay for so their customers to get there as well as Police and Fire services. It's high time for them to start paying their fair share.

Either they should be made to be part of America, or every county should have the option of eliminating representation so to not pay taxes. The same should be for Puerto Rico and any other territory. Making them a normal part of society is the only option, as I know no one who considers themselves "represented", and all would choose to opt out of taxes.

That's fine, they can be a sovereign nation. The U.S. should set up U.S. Customs at all entrances to each reservation, passport required for re-entry to the U.S.

Yes, and the Indian nations can then grant China a "most favoured nation" status.

Dozens of little Chinese enclaves throughout the U.S.

To put it another way; what part of the word "treaty" don't you understand?

That wouldn't solve anything. I was just making the point that anyone, given the option, would choose not paying taxes over fake representation. They need to do away with all contracts with Indian nations. Simply have the land ownership be made normal. Make the res its own county. Plenty would be pissed for not being able to gamble anymore, but why any state with criminalized gambling allows reservations to have a monopoly on such a lucrative enterprise blows my mind to begin with.

But white industrialists should not pay so much income tax - right?

You know nothing as to what you're talking about. At this point, reservations are a safe haven for Mexican nationals, if anything. Crime runs rampant on them, and often spills over into neighboring cities, where the police can't even pursue the culprits back onto the res. They are criminal cesspools.

While we're at it, we should give them back their land instead of forcing them to live in the most god awful pieces of country that white people didn't want.

I suggest we begin by giving them back all of Oklahoma.

They're probably saying the same about their old lands, which is now occupied by New Amsterdam/York.

What's with all the foreigners weighing in on something they know nothing about? The natives have some redeeming features. For instance, they still have a concept of "their people". Where I live a line cook is lucky to get 9 dollars an hour, a server 3.25. On the res they only higher their own, and pay cooks 16 starting, and servers get 8 plus tips. An "Anglo" would charge their child rent and pay them less than the rest on the job. Let alone "their own". That concept is foreign to those of European decent. However, anyone who lives close to a res cannot deny the lack of law on an internal level. I'm sure my community is not the only one who suffers from the spillage.

You did invade their lands and take over though... I'd say they have all rights to continually take from you. If not for the European invasion, you'd still be living in Europe.

    Be greatful.

The strong survive. Period. There is not an inch of Europe that is filled with its original people. Modern history stating that one color conquering another is the only invasions worth ridiculing just proves historians are as racist as any other. If natives want to make a move, that is their right. Nothing more than a thinning of the heard will take place, but such is the nature of the beast. Natives, as a whole, are living far better lives than their counterparts. At this point in modern America, one would be far luckier to be born of native stock than of average "Anglo" decent. Far luckier.

1st off, the money tribes receive generally stems from something used on their land. For instance where I live the freeway, airport and train tracks all go through their land. That is the allocated funds that are split amongst tribal members.
The difference today vs when the treaties were signed is the casinos. At this point one can make a serious argument that the tribes are benefiting from the public works as much as any other. Most would not want the reservations under state jurisdiction because they like mortars on the 4th of July and gambling, things they otherwise wouldn't have access to. But the payment for leasing said land should probably be stopped. Especially in a day and age where hyperinflation, aka national bankruptcy, is on the horizon.

Then GIVE them their reservations, do not simply allow them to live there. Give them independence and they'll be responsible for their own roads and taxation.

You can't have your cake and eat it.

LOL. You seriously have no concept. That is exactly what they have now. Passion with zero knowledge. Got to love it. Reservations are 100s of square miles. Some larger than others. Even if a 40 mile long bridge was built, you would still have to lease the ground the pillars sit on, and the reservations would lose all their revenue from the public not having access. It is the reservations wanting their cake and eat it too. They want to be part of America where it benefits them, but separate as to paying their dues. You can throw out all the historical PC rhetoric, as natives themselves don't give a (*)(*)(*)(*). They know better than anyone what's done is done. They consider themselves as American as anyone. They just don't want to pay taxes, and I seriously doubt anyone can blame them. But how long will they get out of it? That is the question. I assure you, the noble judgement and opinions of foreigners will play no part in the decision.

Are they living in the USA? If yes, they do not have their own lands.

Nice collectivist mentality. You act because we paid for roads that people use, that the people who use the roads somehow owe something back to society, ie. they should be forced to make sacrifices to the state. I disagree that people should be forced to make sacrifices to the state. I disagree with corporate taxes. I disagree with income taxes. I disagree with funding Native Americans. The solution is to cut the size of government so we can keep taxes minimal, not raise taxes. But I know that since you're a liberal, this logic escapes you.

I could see some benefit to it -- honestly, what's killing me is that the whole idea of the hand-outs in the first place was to keep them dependant on the Feds. If you didn't stay on the reservation and beg at whitey's table, you were hunted down. We've done that waay too well (and not just with Natives) and now we find out that we don't have the money for millions of domesticated humans.

The best of both worlds is to allow them to build their own businesses on the reservations -- not just casinos, but computer stuff, or manufacturing or whatever, and maybe tax it at a reduced rate. Win win. But I think I might try the same trick (if it works) in the inner cities.

Why do you consider it their land? Did it have their name stenciled into the hills when they moved there? You do realize they didn't start there but migrated there eventually from asia. They have no more claim to that land than anyone but simply because they were present when they Europeans came everyone assumes its theirs.

In my opinion land belongs to no one other than the person who can stick their flag in the ground and defend it from invaders.
