An interesting idea crossed my mind, and so I want to ask there a question: Can it be interprited that 'West' is more than just a collective description of several countries, but an ideology? In the age of democracies being all over the globe, there appears to be a virtual border between the globe and a group of democracies with certain set of traits, political and military ties and a tendency to act agressively towards other, 'inproper' democracies. Can it be said, that we face a beginning of a new ideology, different from concept of democracy in XX century? I did not through of it much, but my intuition tells me it can become an interesting topic. So, 'West' - distinctive ideology, or just countries that have some common traits?
More gay rights from Canada and USA to Australia and English speak nation there isn't Communism. So I could say West World have more funny even sometimes is tough to were an Nazi. Black people dislike Nazism and even mulatto dislike.
Don't know if it's an ideology, but it's certainly more than a distinction of countries with common traits. For example, it's usual to call some Chinese people "westernized" if they're speaking English well, and are in touch with western values, whatever they may be.
I would say it's a culture more than an ideology as it's not quite as well defined as an ideology normally is. But I voted yes because it does feel like an ideology at times.
'West' is generally people who believe in Christianity because Christianity allows for progressive ideas more than Islam.
The West was once an ideology: capitalism, freedom, Christianity, traditional values. In 1968 it was infected by leftism and suffers until now. The unofficial ideology of the West today is liberalism, satanism, all possible sexual perversions, fun and political correctness. No Free Speech. No Cash No Christianity All three are enemies of morally 'superior' western liberals who begin to fight them. If you say for example something 'wrong' you can be imprisoned for 5 years and fined $5m like in Germany now.
I think some of the previous replies show that "The West" is one of those terms that is used to mean a wide range of different things by different people for different purposes so I don't think you can say it's an ideology.
It's a different beast but no I don't believe it's an ideology more about having similar goals. There is no comprehensive set of beliefs that tie it together, perhaps 50 years ago when it was communism vs capitalism. Today countries in the "west" are much more multicultural and globalism is also blurring lines. I think today alliances are more inwards focussed, more self serving, it's about maintaining status quo ito national security, borders, economy, trade, jobs, because the gap I see from within is the have and the have nots. Keeping out refugees, feeling of dissatisfaction, lowering crime rates, building walls to keep others out, Islam is also seen as a threat to current way of life etc. Anything or anyone who rocks the boat is basically seen as a threat.
West is a direction, opposite of east. The sun sets there. If you want to invent a new ideology at least have enough creativity to come up with a new term. And NO you can't use insanity either.
Christian or post-christian societies. In a lot of countries, the number of christian drastically get lower. However, even for people who don't believe in god, they are still from the christian culture.
I don't think it is an ideology, the west is broken down into many ideologies. Although it may fall into the social doctrine aspect of an ideology. The overall concept. You're correct, the west does act aggressively against other so called improper democracies and/or other countries whom are not aligned with the west. Perhaps this is colonialism under a different guise.
