Is Western culture "superior" to Arabic cultures?

Then I must be confused. Why did you bring up the Amish in a thread comparing Western culture to Arabic culture, again?

 

A culture is superior to another if it makes the practitioners happier than the other culture. Given the turmoil in the Muslim world, I'd say the comparison is a no brainer. But maybe not for long, given the decay of Western civilization.

But, personally, I have my physical, intellectual and spiritual needs met very well and all far better than any Islamic country can provide. That is the advantage of being a conservative: one can appreciate the cultural riches that 2500 years of civilization provide. Liberals want to trash all that and they may yet succeed. That makes 21st C. life a bit bittersweet for me.

It is still much more preferable than the seething discontent that dwells in the liberal's breast.

 

Someone said muslims can't be superior because they are stuck in the 15th century.
So I said Amish is stuck in the 19th century.

I also said each think their own culture is superior to other cultures. If they didn't, they'd change it, IMO.

To old people of every generation, the world has been in decay.
To young people of every generation, it is the way it is and most think its good.

 

I'm a product of Western culture. As such, I personally prefer much of what you might call its "liberal" values -- like individual freedom, human rights, democracy, gender equality, social mobility, and the like. I think they are worth defending, and I do my level best to argue their virtues to people from other cultures.

People in other cultures often have a different value system, one which they prefer. Since "culture" is largely defined by shared referents, it's hard for a member of one culture to objectively judge the value of another culture.

For instance, Arab culture -- like many conservative cultures -- tend to emphasize tribal and family bonds at the expense of individual freedom. As you might imagine, there are advantages and disadvantages to that. Just like there are advantages and disadvantages to the West's prizing of individual freedom over tribal and family bonds.

Is one "superior" to the other? I imagine it comes down to individual preference.

 

I would like to see a reality TV show: Trading Places: American Feminists and Saudi Women.

 

That's a terrible comparison. The Amish are far superior to Muslims.

Ever hear of the phrase "the gates of ijtihad" ? Fundamentalist Sunnis believe that the accepted interpretation of Islamic doctrine in the 10th century is forever the correct interpretation. In the late 90s an Egyptian professor was branded an Apostate by the highest religious authority in Egypt, because he questioned the legitimacy of owning slave girls and a special tax on jews, in the 20th century. Because both the legitimacy of the jewish tax and slave girls was accepted by all of the major schools of Islamic thought in the 10th century. Settled Islamic law that cant be changed.

Okay, okay. I understand now. It is true the Amish live by a strict set of standards, but they're nowhere near as barbaric as that of the Muslim world. Can you imagine how far up the ass of Amish men feminists would climb if they treated their women even remotely as badly as Muslim men treat their women. It would be Armageddon on the farm.

 

Isn't it something that Liberals who are first in line to support evolution, are the last in line to support genetic differences.

You can't use environment to explain it all away, wasn't the Bin Laden family wealthy?

 

I understand genetic differences. You apparently don't. There are not entire classes of humans that are genetically "degenerate".

Case in point. "Disposition toward peaceful actions" is not something that has a recognizable genetic basis between human populations. There is no evidence that Mother Teresa was genetically inclined toward peace, while Osama bin Laden was genetically inclined toward violence.

Fact is research does support that criminals have more kids, and that criminals are more likely to have criminals as kids.

You claim there are not entire classes of degenerate people, then talk about "criminals" having more kids. Implying "criminals" are a genetic class of people.

 

Criminals are degenerate, but their genetics differ, but in many cases obviously there's a similarity of genes that cause criminality.

 

It's very possible that the Mideast is the way it is because of having early civilization, they were the first to stop natural selection, thus they were the first to allow for criminals, and idiots to have more kids, overtime you went from the top, towards the bottom.

Not that I think all people from the Mideast are stupid, or aggressive, but it definitely seems they are in comparison.
