The Australian Mossad agent's name was so secret that even his jailers didn't know it. Now the Israeli government is trying to cover up his true identity
    --
So secret was his identity – and indeed his crime – that even his jailors didn't know his name. And, when details of Israel's "Prisoner X" finally began to emerge, the Prime Minister's office rushed to hold a meeting with newspaper editors to ensure that details of the story did not get out.

Ever since the death of the top secret prisoner three years ago, there has been intense debate about his identity and what heinous crime he was jailed for, with few details ever being offered by the Israeli justice system.

Only now is the murky story of Prisoner X finally beginning to leak out, at least in part. According to an Australian television documentary, broadcast earlier this week, the man in question was an Australian Mossad agent named Ben Zygier, who also used the aliases Ben Alon and Ben Allen after moving to Israel.

The documentary, produced by ABC's Foreign Correspondent programme, says Zygier, 34, was married to an Israeli woman and had two children. It alleges he died after hanging himself in solitary confinement at the high-security Ayalon Prison, which is used to house Israel's worst offenders, including Yigal Amir, the right-wing fanatic who killed Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995.

But even if ABC has pinpointed the identity of Zygier, what he is supposed to have done remains a mystery.

    ====
At the time of Zygier's suicide, (???) -there was rampant speculation over Prisoner X's identity, with a number of media outlets suggesting the man was probably of Iranian descent, and possibly a member of that country's elite Revolutionary Guard.

However, the ABC investigation suggests there is at least evidence that a body repatriated to Australia in 2010 was that of Zygier – the body was transported a week after Prisoner X's death and, ABC suggests, it came under the name of Ben Allen, the same name used on Zygier's second passport

At their heart they are Bolsheviks. Everything about them, beneath the surface, points to it.

That's giving Bolshevism a bad name. You really are a box of contradictions Jack. I'll tell you why. The Bolsheviks were central to the socialist Russia revolution of October 1917, the revolution that got rid of the tyrannical Tsarist regime that preceded it. The kind of rhetoric you use is consistent with the revolutionary spirit of this period of history. It was the genuinelly the greatest working class based revolution in history.

Life itself is contradiction, and I am a living being.

That does not mean to say I would tell you one thing, then trick you, and do another. It may simply be that when not understood especially, some can appear to conflict.

Moreover, sometimes my comparisons are broad trusims, rather than absolute replica of two things.

There are many comparisons to be made, as a for instance, between Communism and Zionism. Indeed, as I have said before, while many pin the tag of Zio Nazi onto Israel, I do not think that is an accurate description of how they are, at heart. Their very flavour and nature, it reminds me more of a Stalinist enclave, a communist outpost of the past. Not NS. Hard line state communism, with a capitalism veneer.

As a for instance, generally speaking, a tactic of the British Army is generally not mass rape. Not saying there have never been any instances. Not saying that at all. However, it is not a tactic one would right away associate with the psyche of how we would generally do things.

Not so the Bolsheviks and Communists. They very much used rape and sexual abuse, on mass, and as a vile tactic. They were the sickest and most perverse of mankind. When they swept into Berlin, it is said that not one girl or women, or child even, was left not raped. It makes NO ODDS what caveats peoplle want to add, you do NOT, as policy, do this. It is more than possible to lead any platoon of men into a situation, and FORBID them from behaving in this manner, to anyone, ever. I do not wish to hear this perversity of how these things must sort of just be so, no they must not, it is the opposite, they absolutely must not, for the moment you action your men to do this, then you are rapists and monsters, and can never return from that point.

If I led a platoon of men into anywhere, it may well be that we would secure the area, it may well be that we would make arrests, it may well even be, if left with no choice, that we have to take a life, to save each other. And that is all acceptable. However, you STILL have a code, and you do not tolerate any deviation from it, thus, under my watch, it would be made clear to my platoon that I wanted tough, I wanted professional, I wanted unity, I wanted effective, but there was to be no RAPE, no murder of minors, AT ALL. Ever. Any soldier engaging in such, I would order to be shot.

Nonsense, the February revolution got rid of the Tsarist regime, not the October revolution. The October revolution got rid of the Provisional Government that was set up to organize free democratic elections in post-tsarist Russia. It was nothing else by a pure usurpation of power by one relatively small fraction of the Russian uber-left, the working class was used by the bolsheviks, it was not the working class' revolution. Duh! Learn your history. You people supporting Hamas, Jihadists, bolsheviks, Ahmadinejads... you are sick, very very sick :(

Bullcrap. The revolution was a genuine representative expression of working class democracy and the Bolsheviks led it.

Sorry, cannot disagree more. They were mass murderers, sadists, and all they did was plunge Russians into hell, they had no intention of any altrusim. It is just another means to push wealth and power into fewer hands, not more hands.

    Middle East Correspondent

WHEN Ben Zygier died alone in a maximum-security prison in Israel he was under investigation by ASIO, which suspected him of using his Australian passport to spy for Israel, Fairfax Media can reveal.

Benji, as he was known in Jerusalem, reacted angrily when Fairfax Media confronted him in early 2010 with allegations that he was working for Israel's security agency, Mossad.

''Who the f--- are you?" an incredulous Mr Zygier asked Fairfax's then Middle East correspondent Jason Koutsoukis. ''What is this total bull(*)(*)(*)(*) you are telling me?''

He expressed shock at the suggestion he was under any kind of surveillance and said that he had also changed his name for personal reasons.

''I have never been to any of those countries that you say I have been to,'' Mr Zygier said. ''I am not involved in any kind of spying. That is ridiculous.''

Koutsoukis said: "He was at first angry, then exasperated that I wouldn't accept his denials at what I was putting to him.

''He told me he was like any other Australian who had made aliyah [immigration to Israel] and was trying to make a life in Israel.''

Fairfax Media spoke to Mr Zygier in Israel in early 2010 after learning that ASIO was investigating at least three dual Australian-Israeli citizens who had emigrated to Israel in the past decade. At the time, ASIO would not comment on the case. On Wednesday, the agency again refused to comment.

Each of the men had travelled back to Australia separately to change their names and obtain a new passport, two intelligence sources said at the time in Koutsoukis' story published in The Age.

One man had changed his name three times, and others had changed theirs twice, the source said, from names that identified them as European-Jewish to ones that were Anglo-Australian.

In each case, the men had used the new passports to travel to Iran, Syria and Lebanon - all countries that do not recognise Israel and do not allow Israelis, or anyone with an Israeli stamp in their passport, to enter. Israel also bans its citizens from travelling to these countries for security reasons.

Along with his Ben Zygier identity, he also used Ben Alon, Ben Allen and Benjamin Burrows.

At the time, Fairfax Media was investigating the men's involvement with a European communications company that had a subsidiary in the Middle East. The company's chief executive denied the men were ever employed by the organisation.

It is believed - although Fairfax Media has been unable to confirm - that Mr Zygier travelled back to Australia in 2009 to do an MBA at Monash University.

A source at the time observed him over several days sitting with a group of students from Saudi Arabia and Iran at the university's Caulfield campus.

The source said: ''[Australian Taxation Office] records from 2008 show that he applied for and was approved a HECS loan for postgraduate studies at Monash University where he is currently [November 2009] studying.''

Since 2006, Monash has been involved in education in Middle Eastern countries, and in 2007 it proposed an initiative for higher-degree students from Saudi Arabia.

Apart from his move to Israel and his MBA study, little is known about Mr Zygier's movements over the decade before he died, except that he was working in insurance law at the Australian firm Deacons in 2002.

In Israel Mr Zygier married a local woman with whom he had two children, the ABC reported.

It was well known that Israel approached people who emigrated from other countries to assist it by handing over their passports, an Israeli intelligence expert told Fairfax in 2010.

''Their names are used later but the person providing the passport is not involved,'' the expert said.

It is understood the ASIO investigation into Mr Zygier and the two other men began at least six months before the January 10, 2010, assassination of senior Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, widely believed to have been carried out by Mossad using Australian and European passports.

Three of those suspected of taking part in the assassination were travelling on Australian passports, using the names of dual Australian-Israeli citizens, authorities in Dubai confirmed.

There is no suggestion that the three Australian names linked to Mabhouh's assassination are connected to Mr Zygier or the other men investigated by ASIO.

After initially denying the Australian government had any knowledge that one of its citizens was detained in Israel, Foreign Minister Bob Carr said some officers in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade were aware of his detention.

The revelations raises questions about how much the Australian government knew about the conditions under which Mr Zygier was being held in the maximum security Ayalon Prison.

The ABC's Foreign Correspondent program, which named Mr Zygier as ''Prisoner X'', said he hanged himself in the specially constructed cell that was meant to be suicide proof.

Mr Zygier was held in isolation - and in secret - in Unit 15, a separate wing of Ayalon Prison that contains just a single cell in Israel's most secure prison in Ramla, near Tel Aviv.

The cell is believed to have been built for Yigal Amir, who murdered Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in November 1995.

It is described as a cell within a block within a prison. The inmate in Unit 15 was allowed no visitors and even after his death his identity was a state secret, protected by a court-issued gag order despite continuing protests from human rights groups.

''He is simply a person without a name and without an identity who has been placed in total and utter isolation from the outside world,'' a prison official was quoted as saying in the Israeli media in 2010, when news of ''Prisoner X'' first broke, and was then suppressed.

It is unclear what, if anything, Australia was told by the Israeli authorities about the death in custody of one of its citizens, or whether any consular assistance was provided to Mr Zygier during his time in solitary confinement.

That's absolute nonsense bellied by historical facts:

On September1, 1917, the Bolsheviks won a majority in the Petrograd Soviet. On September 5, the Moscow Soviet followed suit. On September 9, Trotsky was elected president of the Petrograd Soviet. A clear majority of the working class was behind the Bolsheviks. Lenin launched an offensive within the party to prepare for an armed uprising and seizure of power. He met stiff resistance from the Bolshevik Central Committee. For almost a month, Lenin insistently argued for the party to prepare for an insurrection. Finally, on October 10, after bitter debate, the Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party voted in favour of a rising.

Dude. I have read all about what they did. It was evil and not for the benefit of anyone but pushing power and wealth into the hands of the few. They were rapists, murderers and butchers, to a man. We are going to have to agree to disagree, as I think all that then spawned from it is the most evil and get away free bunch of killers...ever.

Jack, you/'ve been brainwashed on this issue by the kind of media and bourgeoise revisionism you normally righly condemn. A known lying Zionist and pro-Israeli supporter, who lies as a matter of course, takes your line on this. Facts are facts. The revolution was as en expression of the democratic will of the people and those people overthrew a tyranny as a result. Just like the kind of thing you apparently are supportive of. You have been lied to Jack.

First off, it's NOT Prisoner X, his name is Prisoner VI. His crime was in resigning from the spy biz but not telling his superiors WHY he quit. He's actually not dead but has been relocated to a place called "The Village" where they keep asking him why he resigned. A number of people, known as the Twos, have been interrogating him for years with no success.

Why don't they just strangle him and save money on bullets, along with the room and board if he won't co-operate? It's a waste of money to keep him alive and pay wages to interrogators if a person wont' talk.

    Oh, I guess they did.

Lesson to political prisoners: If you don't want to be snuffed, give real tidbits every now and then. When you run out of goodies, unless you have a chance of being sprung, you will probably be killed.

Be specific. What is it that you are denying or think I am wrong on here? That the Bolsheviks did not mass murder innocents? That the Communists were not a nasty and evil force, that claimed tens of millions of lives, and caused staggering misery?

The Red Army? Not my kind of people. The NKVD etc? Not my bag.

    Sorry

So, is this thread about the Jewish connection to Bolshevism or about an Australian guy that died in an Israeli prison....I'm confused.

Perhaps it is a random conglomeration thread? I would like to discuss goldfish, pizza and why the two don't go together so well.

The subject of discussion is about the nature of the October 1917 revolution not its subsequent bastardization.

The Provisional government was charged with organizing free democratic elections, the bolshevik revolution was nothing but a coup to overthrow them, usurp the power and suppress the democratic process. The goal was "the dictatorship of the Proletariat", one party system suppressing any kind of opposition, not democracy.
