And I never said that you can't say, "Happy Kwanza."

In fact, I said you can say, "Happy Kwanza" till the cows come home.

So we are not in disagreement here, which, therefore, does not make this an argument that we are having.

My argument this whole time is that Kwanza is a fake holiday. Period. End of sentence.

Thank you for quoting me without saying anything.

Really substantiates your claim that you don't care what I have to say, buddy.

So if it's snarky, it's different?

Why would you assume that Merriam-Webster is the only dictionary? Why is it THE dictionary? And if it is the sole determiner of what the word "holiday" means, then do you seriously believe that the word had no meaning until the 1800s? Did English just not exist at all until the 1800s?

A few things here: dictionaries are a history of usage. They are not golden tablets on which our language is founded. Dictionaries come from language, not the other way around. They are an occasionally useful tool, not an objective foundation of all meaning.

The Random House Unabridged Dictionary says that Kwanzaa is a holiday.

"Kwanza is another spelling of Kwanzaa, a holiday in celebration of African heritage and Black culture and values that’s observed from December 26 to January 1.

Kwanzaa is sometimes seen spelled with only one a at the end, as Kwanza, but Kwanzaa is generally considered the proper spelling.

It is primarily observed by African Americans in the U.S. but is also celebrated in some other countries by members of the African diaspora—those whose ancestors came from Africa. Kwanzaa is an Afrocentric holiday but is not typically observed in Africa itself."

Also (and this is why petty semantic arguments like this that try to base everything on Sophistry get laborious quickly), you clearly didn't read your own favorite dictionary well enough. Merriam-Webster says that a holiday is a holy day, but one of its definitions of "holy" is "venerated as or as if sacred." So, as long as someone venerates the day as or as if sacred, it would be a holiday . . . bringing us back to the point I made to you earlier: holidays are subjective, even "THE dictionary" notes a subjective meaning for the word "holy."

So when someone wishes you a happy birthday, do ********* because it's not a holiday? She didn't say, "I wish you a happy Kwanzaa holiday season," She said Happy Kwanzaa.

    Sheesh
Nothing to do with Irish people, is what I've been told. (Not by any of my Irish friends, mind you.)

Were you there at Jesus's birth ?? If not please don't say Merry Christmas …. ;)

Because YOU say Kwanzaa is not a tradition then it isn't ?
    :roflol::roflol::roll::roflol::roflol:

It is and anyone can say "Happy Kwanzaa" and celebrate it so it IS inclusive :)

And YOU implied that since Harris didn't celebrate it from the beginning she shouldn't celebrate it ( a silly, silly idea)...and YOU were NOT at the first Christmas :)

It is considered by most to be the most prestigious source on American English. That is why I cite it.

It is the most reliable source on American English.

Okay. Not really relevant to anything. But okay.

    They're wrong.

    Again, projection.

In the same breath in which you claim I am using sophistry, you use sophistry. The word "holy day" is a noun phrase. That noun phrase, a sense of the word "holiday," is hyperlinked to its definition: "a day set aside for special religious observance." Kwanza is not "a day set aside for special religious observance." You trying to remove holy from the context of the noun phrase is a textbook definition of sophistry (not capitalized).

So what if it’s not a holiday? Why is that such a big deal for you?

How many in this thread believed Kwanzaa is a holiday, as defined by you?

Some people just get stuck in their head about things. It has no personal value, so it has no value, period.

Sad some can't just live and let live.

I've never said you cannot say, "Happy Kwanza."

I am just noting that it is fake holiday.

You people just cannot let that go. You and a couple of others are fighting tooth and nail to try to prove me wrong, even though you don't have the facts on your side.

Ah, nothing like anecdotal evidence to really substantiate your argument.

I'm not trying to prove you wrong. I'm a bit annoyed that you feel justified in telling people what days that they can and can't celebrate. I'm over it. You keep trying to be the holiday police. I'll be over here, not worrying about it any more.

    Cheers.

Right! Wait 'til I tell my husband I can't wish him a happy pay raise, and we can't celebrate it, because it's not an actual holiday.

    LMAO.

    Irrelevant.

This entire thread can think the sky is orange and gravity doesn't exist; it doesn't make it so.

These arguments for Kwanza are getting dumber.

With my polemic saber of logic and facts, I have not ceded ground. I have made easy work of all three of you, you, Curious Always, and yardmeat. But I must retire soon.

So if no one in here believes it’s a holiday, as defined by you, then what are you going on about? You seem to be arguing against something that doesn’t exist. Great job

I am simply replying to the three of you.

If you don't really care about me indicating that Kwanza is not a holiday, then please stop replying. The fact that you keep replying means that is bugs you; it irks you. And either you are trying to convince me or the audience on the legitimacy of Kwanza.

    Perhaps it's the word legitimate.

A celebration is made legitimate by the people doing the celebrating. End of story.

You’re not making sense. Your big thing is “teaching people facts” but if none of us claimed Kwanzaa is a holiday then your entire reason for being here is meaningless. You’re arguing about something no one claimed.
